I don’t even like Hollow Knight that much but I’ll buy it because it’s $20.
You do you, but I don’t recommend buying games you don’t want to play
Sometimes you just want to admire your collection.
Me with a Steam library of 666 games having only played like 10% of them.
This is how to do it
RIP Steam download servers.
Hollow Knight was only $15 and got a lot of free DLC. The developers considered it a huge success.
The most overhyped game I’ve seen over the past year, they’re pushing the PR so damn hard.
Don’t yuck someone’s yum. Thinking something tastes like shit does not mean you are welcome to take a dump in someone else’s porridge.
What PR? The only PR Team Cherry did was make and release a damned good Metroidvania.
Since then, and uptil now, it’s mostly been silence.
Weird, huh, how fans can get excited to play a good game?
I think if you can overhype a game to the point where clueless people like [email protected] are inventing PR, by not saying anything, that’s a pretty big achievement.
It’s not their fault way too many people were so obsessed with their game that they made daily shitposts about it.
Honestly I was annoyed by all of the Silksong stuff as well over the years, and perhaps it will be overhyped but after watching the trailer I feel like I can at least say Team Cherry put in the work that got me excited, despite all the internets noise. And why shouldn’t they try to get people to buy their game with good PR?
The team is 3 or 4 people and after 7 years of work, they’re releasing their sequel game to a beloved by many indie hit for $20. In 2025. We shouldn’t be annoyed at them.
Just say Hollow Knight was too hard for you. It’s OK.
There’s no need for the other person to yuck anyone’s yum, but this argument sucks too, in all of its forms.
I disagree. Jerks should be met with jerky behavior.
Now we know you’re a miserable douche. Looking forward to breaking out the popcoen when you throw a temper tantrum over Silksong not living up to the hype
Who is the miserable one here? You’re hoping for people to be disappointed in a game they’re excited about. Let them have their fun. If the game isn’t for you, no need to hope others don’t enjoy it.
No, the fanbase has lost that right. God forbid anyone says anything about Hollow Knight that isn’t calling it a flawless masterpiece.
Any criticism of the game gets immediately flooded with downvotes and inundated with thoughtless comments like ‘git gud’.
And all of this is on top of the constant peer pressure for people to “just buy this masterpiece of a game” no matter what, and if you don’t like it because you don’t care for games that punch your face in a form of toxic masculine dick measuring, that’s your fault for being a weenie and not reading the Steam tags, despite tags being really easy to miss.
You don’t see this behavior from other indie game fandoms. Nobody in Stardew Valley’s community is going to bash your for not being into farming or life sims.
So no, the Hollow Knight fanbase don’t get to have their fun in peace, because it’s filled with massive pricks and they insist on pushing every little detail into its own article that gets shoved into everyone’s feed nonstop.
I’ve literally experienced none of what you’re saying. Sounds like you need to stop interacting with certain places.
There are even people in here saying the game wasn’t for them but they’re not being miserable about it.
This is my experience so far. I don’t consider myself a bad gamer, but games like this with fairly intentional difficulty spikes turn some people off. I go both ways on it. The gargoyles in dark souls were a road block, but I was happy to beat my head into that wall until it broke. Kinda the same with the three guys guarding the wall kick in Hollow Knight. But if it’s like a switch or a dumb ring that’s necessary to get past an area,I don’t like it all that much(which I think is why so many people didn’t like the demon ruins, and it being a rushed area).
I got hollow Knight like a year or two ago and come back to it occasionally every few weeks or so. I find it fun and enjoyable enough. I can see the love and intention in every area, and can respect that. But it’s not in my to ten favorites. And not to harsh anyone else’s mellow. If you love it that’s great. I don’t want to take that away from you. I will likely be a day one buyer of silk song just to show support for this kind pricing and fan service. But let people enjoy what they want.
The comment I responded to is literally part of this. Are you fucking blind?
Not my fault you seem to selectively turn a blind eye to assholery. But you’re not my problem anymore; let the door hit you on the way out
Nice. Now post a link to the game you made that was this well received and loved.
This kind of argument suuuuuucks. I can at least understand the other commenter being sceptical of games that are popular because marketers are sneaky like that (not that I agree with the person you’re replying to), but this “you can’t criticise unless you’ve developed a game” thing is no good
What marketing has team cherry actually done? All the hype is from fans that have been waiting for years.
I wasn’t making any comment about that.
My point is that it is infinitely easier to be destructive than to create.
No I get it, and that in particular is a good point, but the whole “you can’t criticise this until you’ve made something equivalent” is just nothing
Yeah I didn’t mean to make that a blanket statement. Hollow Knight is just one of the few cases of just an incredible game, well liked, by a studio looking out for their customers and not being greedy fuck heads. The original comment has no place for many reasons. The hype is there because it is earned for sure.
It is sad that there are such few cases in an industry that could be so artistic! I wanna make it clear that I do have a lot of respect for indie Devs like Team Cherry for the way they’re working and the way they’re not exploiting their fans.
I have no strong feelings on whether this game, or Hollow Knight, are overhyped and I know they’re beloved. I enjoyed Hollow Knight.
I also do understand being sceptical of “beloved” products. There’s a lot of sneaky marketing tactics out there. I’m very anti-advertising, so I know I’m biased and probably a little paranoid lol
I’m absolutely not saying Team Cherry is doing some sneaky grassroots marketing campaign or anything, and I do believe that Silksong has a lot of people excited which is why we’re seeing so much chatter about it! We are not disagreeing.
I hope you’ve had a good start to the week! ✌️
Why “over”? Everybody I know is hyped, but they are in love with hollow Knight, so it’s expected. I don’t see reasons to believe the hype is too high.
Agreed. Hollow Knight is overrated.
The frustrating part is it only needed 2 changes to not suck: bosses get health bars and ghosts spawn at the start of the room, not halfway through a platforming challenge.
And before anyone mentions mods: devs shouldn’t rely on mods to fix their damn game
I’ll no fanboy of the game, but I’m not a hater either. I enjoy it but don’t understand the cult like love of it.
That being said the shade seems to be one of the fairest mechanics. It always seems to be in an intentional place. That it’s neither elementary school easy, or PhD level hard to get to.
Believe it or not, right to gaol.
no matter how many times I see it, that’s still a wild spelling of that word and shouldn’t be allowed. in fact you should go to jail for it. fucking ghoti-ass spelling.
gaol has the best jraphics.
Playing Bloodborne and getting unexpectedly sucked into Hypogean Gaol really cemented that spelling into my brain.
From experience… Hmmmm $120 take it or leave it.
For ever!
Whoa. Enormous respect to Team Cherry for this. It’s so cool to see people not rinsing passionate fans! Well done 🤘
Many others would’ve made it at least twice as much, knowing that regardless of the cost, it would’ve sold like crazy.
For all of team cherry’s trolling the past two years, this is a welcome surprise.
Take note AAA studios - this is how you do it.
With this pricing, Silksong may be the only game this year that I’ll actually purchase on release day.
Comparing a 2D sprite-based Unity sidescroller, made by 4 dudes, to something like Death Stranding is not exactly fair.
Depends on what basis one is comparing it.
They are very different scales of game, but they both exist within the same economic realities.
Big studios seem to be working on the basis that just because they spend millions on a game, the game automatically becomes worth whatever price tag they want to slap on it - as if it’s a natural law that pumping in more money should directly translate to more revenue, without fail.
But it turns out the value of a game is not what publishers hope its worth - its what players percieve it is worth.
So it’s no surprise that indie games with amazing price-to-value ratios are seeing a surge, while big studios are struggling and don’t seem to have any ability to understand why their business model isn’t working.
Publishers are all shocked pikachu when their big budget games fall flat, but If people don’t want to buy an $80 game it’s not their fault - it’s your fault for not doing enough to justify the price tag.
My message to studios isn’t “your games should all be $20” (although some of them should) it’s “you should provide value that matches the price tag” - and Silksong over here just laid down the gauntlet as a game which looks set to deliver tonnes of value for relatively little cost.
True. The 2D sprite-based Unity sidescroller will actually be fun.
Unfortunately AAA studios have a long rat tail of unproductive execs and managers that take a huge pay cut and investors need to be happy too so their games will soon cost $100.
They also have dev/art teams orders of magnitudes larger than Team Cherry. (I do agree with your sentiment about useless managers and execs, of course.)
Reducing team size and making smaller games to split the risk is also an option imo
That’s basically giving it away. I guess they can very well expect to make the money back in volume.
We don’t deserve team cherry. They could’ve easily sold it for $40 and everybody would have bought it, but they mentioned before that they wanted their games to be affordable for more people to play.
I don’t really like games like this (I know Hollow Knight is a masterpiece if you do) but I’d be tempted to buy it for $20 just to support the studio
im a huge metroidvania fan, but i have yet to play hollow knight. i know this studio deserves everything it gets so for $20 ill be getting it day 1. i know ill be playing both at some point down the line
Yeah. Similar sentiment here. For me, spending $20 is my special way of flipping the bird at Nintendo and every other greedy AAA studios for wanting to jack up the price of games.
Same. Hollow Knight’s combat and platforming simply didn’t click. But, the atmosphere of that game is simply impeccable. That, to me, makes Hollow Knight an amazing video game, just one not for me.
I’m in the same boat. Hollow knight never clicked for me but I get what people like about it. Silksong looks like hollow knight with better combat though so that will make it more enjoyable for me…probably.
Basically my take. The lore and art take Hollow Knight over the top to Goat status, but it does not dethrone Blasphemous 2 for me… I’m not entirely sure anything can.
Blasphemous 2 never dethroned Hollow Knight.
I think you may have missed the “for me” in that users sentence. It’s their opinion that Blasphemous 2 is more enjoyable than Hollow Knight.
Excuse me, MagusFungus actually wrote the book on Vanilla_PuddinFudge, and can be considered the authority on the subject.
Vanilla pudding fudge sounds like something I clean up after my cat finds,& eats, a new plant
Blasphemy!
At $20 this is a day one Steam purchase for me. Even if I don’t get around to playing it for the next several months.
i expected it to be more ngl
and they’re going to prove the same point stardew did, by selling multiple copies to the same people on different platforms and blowing any sales projections they might have made out of the water, that video games right now are ridiculously overpriced.
