27 hours spent on this damned game since Friday evening. Good grief. This kind of engagement has been rare for me lately, so I am super pleased on multiple levels.

Sure its simple and formulaic in ways. So what? The combo is scratching so many good itches.

I’m having fun with it on Game Pass but I don’t think I would describe it as a good game. It’s formulaic and low quality. It’s just a normal survival game IMO, although the aspect of collecting Pokémon is enough to keep the game engaging since it makes you want to collect them all.

Isn’t the game pass version a much older build as compared to the one on steam?

You’re right. If it wasn’t for the Pokemon bit, this would just be another early acces survival crafting game. The Pokemon bit is what makes it shine though.

Yeah, but for their credit, the bit about having your creatures do tasks for you on your base and having different creatures with different base-oriented skills is not something that Pokémon ever had.

That’s just a bonus. Still the best Pokemon game since I can throw out my funny sheep and watch it battle in real time, then give it hugs after winning.

Yep, like dominic on X explained, it fixes all of arks shortcomings, and makes the extremely hostile survival genre more accessible.

Are there profiles so different people can play?

No profiles, but there’s save slots so you could have a couple playthroughs going.

Your account can only have 1 person per server/world and it is only for that world.

You can create/join multiple worlds, each has its own independent progress.

So for example, if everyone in a family of 4 wanted to play but only one account, they each could play independently on different worlds using the same account, but could never join each other’s worlds with any character other than the first made on that world.

But if you share your library you should be able to be on the same world right?

I’m not sure if that’s what you mean but I don’t think you can play the same game at the same time when sharing your Steam library

@[email protected]

Been thinking on this, I believe that if you family share the game on steam, each steam account could independently access the same dedicated or community servers, but local worlds will still only be accessible by the creator as they are the only one who can host their world. You may be able copy the world files between the different folders though.

Mood. This and The Finals have made my time evaporate.

I tried to like The Finals but zero sbmm and only one or possibly two competitive builds made the game boring. I’m not grinding 200 hours to unlock shit that actually affects playability.

Electric

I only play ranked so I can’t speak to that SBMM thing but pretty much everything is viable in some way. One of my favorite builds is riot shield with both turrets. Other is flamethrower with goop launcher. Unlocking stuff is much faster as well in ranked so only took me a week I think to unlock everything. 🤷

That game is an asset flip for sure. Just another AI scam game, of which we will see thousands and thousands of in the coming years. Developers history is just red flags all over.

Even if all the art was an asset flip, the underlying game has good mechanics and satisfying gameplay. People don’t play for hours straight even if a game is gorgeous is the game is boring.

i stand with you, my very downvoted brother. granted i’ve seen like 7 minutes total of gameplay, but it just seems like another “build base, do resource chores” game with some very reddit “dude what if you could SHOOT pokémon⁉️” sprinkled on top

Most of the survival bits are automated by your slaves worker pals, so its mainly about the exploration and pal caching. Maybe you should give it a try.

Genuinely, people are shitting on it because it sells itself on a meme, is made by a dev with shady history, and likely has its creature designs aided strongly by an AI model trained on Pokemon.

With all that in mind, it punches WAY above its weight class. There’s shockingly little jank for an early access game this massive (it legitimately feels like a complete game worth paying for right now), the designs look super derivative but they’re nearly as well executed as the original Pokemon that inspired them so I’m still falling in love with everything I see, and the uniquely dark way they handle the subject matter gives it some sense of danger to the journey without getting in the way of critter companionship people seek out in a Pokemon game. I honestly can’t find much to fault at all. And any concerns that it won’t get future updates to smooth out rough edges, add more options and content are nuts, IMO. With the momentum this game has going, no chance the dev pulls out before making good on promises.

I wouldn’t say that anything Palworld is doing is groundbreaking on its own. Most critters feel like Pokemon parts and colors reassembled into new combinations. Exploration is a jankier clone of BOTW. The environment is way nicer looking and more interesting than anything from the last few Pokemon games but that’s hardly a high bar. Survival mechanics are uninspired. Base mechanics and managing active pals are pretty similar to Cult of the Lamb. But the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

The designs are a ripoff but the elements are so heavily lifted that I’m not sure it’s AI generated.

https://twitter.com/CeciliaFae/status/1749183059877085396

Look at these comparisons and look at some of the shared qualities, it’s most noticeable for the eyes and mouth.

AI wouldn’t copy-paste like that, it would meld them. The comparisons look a bit more like an artist took some a pokemon, changed the animal type and color palette and called it a day lol

No need. I play a lot of games in that genre, and if I have the urge, I’ll dive back into one of them. The game is being pushed very hard for whom it came from. It feels very artificial to me. I’m perfectly happy missing out on what I’m told is the new hot shit. I’ll decide what’s hot shit on my own.

I played their previous game and was 100% sure this game was going to not be as great as advertised judging by their previous work.

I was 100% wrong. There is no connection between the quality of their previous game and this one. It’s been so freaking good for an EA game from these devs…

I’m actually convinced craftopia was a test bed for tech they needed to make this game and they just decided to sell it to fund future development. I definitely don’t mind because craftopia was fun for a while as well

I suggest you watch someone playing it on twitch for 30m. Or watch a letsplay on YouTube.
It doesn’t seem like an asset flip. It’s heavily inspired by other games, and picks the best parts.
It’s feature complete (certainly up to level 30, haven’t seen beyond that) and plays well. Very few bugs, mostly just jank geometry in the gigantic map.

I’ve seen some enemies around level 38 or so, some areas are very unfinished but it’s kind of crazy that a new early access game has this much content.

I remember when Grounded came out on early access and had like 30 minutes of content + the starting area only.

TBH, this game is the only recent game with survival, base building and pet collection mechanics all mixed together. Some games require you to collect pet but then the pet doesn’t affect your survival or base building. Some games require you to farm stuff for survival and base building, but pet had no part in it. The game has just okay-ish quality and lots of QoL features are needed. The game also doesn’t have any ground breaking design. It simply mixes all elements coercively in a $30 package (even less with regional pricing). That’s how it gets the big win. Well deserved of course and I really love playing the game.

(If it costs $60, it would fail right at the gate.)

I went into it after two years of morbid curiosity with zero expectations except maybe thinking it was going to be pretty low quality. I’ve put 20ish hours in since Friday and that’s only because I had stuff to do all weekend. Three friends have already hit level 25 after seeing me play it on our Discord.

It’s far from perfect, but I’m impressed and having fun.

Maybe this is just me but I think AI when used by an indy dev is fine but when a massive company uses it, it’s typically to lay off staff or something shitty.

@[email protected]

What’s the difference? An indie studio using AI means a real human won’t have a job. Plus all the copyrighted work that trained the AIs to begin with puts anyone that uses it in the wrong.

In a lot of cases they don’t have the resources to hire someone, they wouldn’t have given anyone a job regardless but can now make their game.

Artists called the camera theft too. The problem with protecting ones livelihood is a tale as old as time. It’s ok for the robot to replace laborers and it’s ok for the computer to replace accountants but the machine making pictures is where I draw the line.

Your livelihood is always under threat because capitalism designed it that way.

Wouldn’t the artists be jealous of the programmers? You never see artists stick up for programmers being replaced by game engines. Programmers had no problem giving independence to artists. But artists have a huge problem giving back to programmers. I should be able to make a Stardew Valley with no artistic skill just like Stardew Valley was made with no programming skill. We’re leveling the playing field, and look whose whining.
