It’s not you, I’m probably on the opposite spectrum, being overly pessimistic. I’m not criticising this acquisition in particular and you’re right, we can’t know how this will go ; it’s more of a jab at the industry as a whole : a lot of new releases are advertised as being made by ex devs of whatever studio was once praised, and turn out to be ersatz of the original material (Back 4 Blood, Stormgate, Kerbal Space Program…). This kind of marketing is super disingenuous!

Can you believe this headline? I have this weird feeling where the video game industry now only presents itself as former of former of… Everyone is referred to as their past roles, there’s no present or future anymore, just looking back at what we had and pretending to offer something similar

Return of the Obra Dinn is similar in that you may even want to have a notebook with you, but the experience is so worth it

I finally decided to go further than the elevator in MGS, so probably that, and hopefully follow up with the whole franchise (i only played mgs5 for about 5 hours).

I also started playing Black Book, interesting deck building game !

Oh yes, I played it last year, it moved me so much, it felt like what video games have best to offer as an art medium

No worries, I’ll keep it in mind, thanks !!

I made the _what's next after Half-Life_ thread and received many awesome recommendations, thank you guys! During the Holidays a game caught all my attention: Pentiment. It hooked me and I played it non stop for three days, now that I finished it, I may do another play through to unlock all achievements and try other choices, but in the meantime I am in quest for similar games! What I'm craving : - the mystery / investigation was great, for context I have already played Outer Wilds, Obra Dinn, Golden Idol, Frog Detective, Disco Elysium... they immediately came to mind once I started puzzling what I had to do. What are similar games with a murder mystery at their core, that reward investigation? - the effort to provide historical accuracy, this is a time and area of Europe I only briefly learned about in middle school, so it felt nice having a glimpse of what life was like in 15th century Bavaria, are there games that try to portray life and folklore of people I may not know about? For context I am an average western European. - the sense of progression struck me, I saw kids become teens, then adults, I got to know these families, attach myself to some of them, saw their evolution as characters, are there games that make you get close to characters and see who they become over multiple years, over generations ? I can't remember any game that made me care that much for NPCs as this one. - I enjoyed the art direction a lot, medieval illustrations have this quirkiness that just endears me, I had already played the Rock of Ages games, are there similar games with this feeling of playing through pages of a book? Or any game with a really nice / stylised illustration style? I already played Gris which was beautiful. - After finishing the game, I was left unsatisfied with the explanation and wanting more, I mislead myself in thinking the dialogues animation and typos / font switching had a bigger impact and were hiding some 4th wall breaking. Are there games that play with this kind of meta mystery (I don't know what word best describes it) where you have a glimpse that there's something bigger behind the scenes? Inscryption is one of my favourite games for this, I also really liked the demo for 'is this game trying to kill me' and am planning to get it during the Steam winter sale Thanks !!

I just started playing Potionomics (https://store.steampowered.com/app/1874490/Potionomics/), and I’m loving it, chill and easy to pick up but with some depth, the animation and art is great

It’s a great game, and very healthy when it comes to fomo (it’s non existent you can pick previous battle passes and make progress on them, there’s many systems for unlocking new stuff…). The only downside of starting “late” is that you have everything to unlock, which may feel overwhelming, while I only had to unlock new cosmetics and gear upgrades as they were introduced over time (been playing since early access).

Also the whole game is designed around coop, anything you do will help your teammates, people are very chill so didn’t be afraid to join random lobbies, but if you’d rather play alone you’ll have a dedicated flying robot to help you out!

This is me, Destiny 2 has about 1000 more from when it was on Battle.Net. I’m planning to completely stop playing DRG once i hit 100 hours as I’ve pretty much finished the game (almost max level on all classes and unlocked every cosmetics).

From that list :

  • Keep talking and nobody explodes: incredible fun with friends, even better if the help has the documents physically printed, there’s this magic that happens when you frantically search for the right page and try to keep calm
  • Titanfall 2 : worth it just for the campaign, I don’t know about the state of multiplayer anymore (servers are back i think, no more need for a custom client), I last played it last year, people were understandably sweaty, movement and gameplay is unparalleled
  • Vermintide 2 : in its best state ever it seems, hours of fun and great challenges, interesting mods for qol and to add to the game’s longevity, I dream of when Darktide will reach that point- Firewatch : nice story, beautiful art direction, ending is “controversial” in that it is kind of abrupt with little payoff, but the journey is great, imo a really good walking simulator
  • Metro Exodus : superb open world, great conclusion to the series, pays off even more if you read the book, day night cycle, each map feels handmade given the amount of details, best “skewmorphic” interface in games

Edit : fuck me i edited my comment and accidentally deleted the paragraph about Firewatch, tldr beautiful art direction

GOOD I will never forgive them for the sunsetting bs they pulled after delivering forskaren

I can think of a workaround if you’re in the mood to tinker :

In your profile settings, navigate to the featured showcase tab, you may be able to select Steam Replay (and probably the year too). If you save and go back to look at your profile page, it should appear, and you’ll be able to click on it for all the details

Edit : it looks like this

It was featured on the front page of the store but now that the winter sale started it might have been pushed out, try checking on your profile page, it might be there, or in the steam menus

When would you say is a better time ?

It’s a gem, my personal goty for 2023, it’s so much fun contained in a rhythm game, it feels like overcooked meets guitar hero

I do think the price is too much and is dragging the game down

This issue would be solved / non existent if matchmaking was not the only option for playing online game, which wouldn’t be an issue if publishers stopped being so greedy and predatory when it comes to player retention, which wouldn’t be an issue if the economic system we live in didn’t promote this toxic behaviour.

So yeah, kernel based anticheats are mostly just a symptom of a larger problem, the rotten video games industry

Roguelike/lite especially feels overused and saturated nowadays it’s annoying

No worries, I deliberately played HL1 first so that I could revisit it with Black Mesa, I felt like it was still important to experience the source material

Excellent listw thank you for the links!!

Oh yeah I forgot to mention them, I absolutely love the metro series, I actually read metro 2033 before discovering there was a game about it haha, never played the Redux versions though, thanks for the idea !!

Hahaha well I have all of HL2’s achievements to complete

Thanks! I knew of their existence but didn’t know if they were worth it, I think I’ll play them a bit later because at some point I was really struggling with the pacing of HL1

What’s next after Half-Life?
I have just finished the Half-Life series. Prompted by the 20th anniversary of HL2, I decided to play HL1 (1997), then HL2 (2004), and both episodes. I'm currently playing through Black Mesa and it's very enjoyable so far, it's like they took everything from HL1 and removed the annoying parts, I'm excited to see what more changes they decided to make, and what other references are present. HL1 aged badly imo, but I recognize the technical achievement that it was at the time it was released. It's full of good ideas, and I'm amazed by what they've accomplished. HL2 didn't feel like a it has a technical leap as big as its predecessor, but the gameplay ideas in there feel more modern than most game 20 years later. The game has some long stretches that were a bit annoying but the whole journey felt worth it. During the last chapter where you get the upgraded gravity gun, I started seeing the seeds of Portal games, more so in Episode 1, it was like I suddenly understood Valve as game devs and their philosophy. Episode 2 was the most fun I had and despite being short it felt like a full fledged campaign. Alyx was fun to watch on youtube 🤡 I'm really happy that I completed the games and can put them down (compared to grinding endlessly in live service games), I'm really glad that I now understand why the series is praised, why people are aching for the third Episode, why Valve backed themselves into a corner because of their technical ambitions. But now, I want more of this, more of those one of a kind experiences that push the genre forward. More gameplay ideas. I'll probably replay the Portal games, but what other games would you recommend? Some times, Half Life reminded me of more modern immersive sims I played before (Dishonored, Prey, I'll probably go back to them at some point), maybe Deux Ex, System Shock should be on my list?

Katana Zero did it for me

Infinite forest for Destiny 2’s Halloween event did it as well

Trackmania sometimes does it

Super Hexagon too

It seems to me that the game was laughed at on release (the whole walking delivery simulator thing), and it needed time to be praised for its innovations by people, it’s really weird and I don’t have a good enough memory to remember similar change in public opinion for other games

Game of the Year : not sure yet what to pick

VR Game of the Year : Metro Awakening, I don’t have a headset but it looks like a great adaptation in the Metro franchise

PCGamer really hates doing journalism mhm ? You have to figure out which link goes back to the actual article about the mentioned report, and then find which link directly goes to the report : https://www.adl.org/resources/report/steam-powered-hate-top-gaming-site-rife-extremism-antisemitism

The full report actually provides a lot more information and answers some legitimate questions, and other ignorant comments raised in here, there’s an entire appendix about their method and how they fine tuned an ai model to review 150+ million profile pictures / 600+ million comments

There’s also interesting info about the customization of Steam profile, which I don’t remember Steam publicly sharing :

At the time of data collection, Steam Community had 458.32 million users. Of these, 418.4 million were public profiles and 39.68 million were private profiles (even if a profile was private, there was certain related information that was publicly available).

Many of Steam Community’s 458.32 million users have not customized their accounts extensively. Only 7.4% of public profiles have a summary, Steam Community’s equivalent of a social media bio. 41.8% of profiles use Steam community’s default profile picture, making it the most common avatar on Steam, present on 191.2 million profiles.

Most Steam Community users are also not particularly active. One proxy for activity is player level, which users can increase by activities such as buying games or collecting trading cards while playing games on Steam. Among the 91.69% of Steam Community users who publicize their level, the average level is 2.8 and the median level is 0.0 (the maximum level observed was 5,001). Our detections should be interpreted with this context in mind.

I mean that’s one of life’s main lesson, right ? You can be nice, invested, do everything right, and still fail

Oh yes ! I discovered those thanks to Shut Up And Sit Down’s review, they look super fun

I’ve only played the demo of Darkest Dungeon 2 so no idea about the changes, I liked the cart riding segment, it’s a fun way to take breaks between battles, I’ll take a look !

I’m playing Hidden Folks (2017) on Steam Deck, to chill in the evening, it’s probably the best where’s waldo game on steam ? I don’t find the cats series at all engaging

I also reinstalled Darkest Dungeon (2016), this time for sure I will commit to it and not stop after 3 runs 🤡

I’m 10 years younger and I feel the same, granted, I still game a lot, but I find myself more excited about the ideas and potential of a game, than actually playing it.

I think it’s a normal thing, you gotta get tired of a hobby after so many years, and it’s a healthy thing to cycle it out and pick up something else, and maybe come back to it some time later

I really think they shot themselves in the feet by going from a pve online coop game like Helldivers to whatever this is trying to be, that plus the pricing chance (it was supposed to be f2p and is now 40)…

Then again, I don’t know what’s up internally, they probably know what they’re doing, it still feels like it’s not going to be popular

What games did you play New Game + on ?
I rarely replay games once I finish them, but a few left me an itch to replay them with this mode : Dishonored 2, and Styx: Shards of Darkness
