ITT: people pretend to actually give a fuck about where a minecraft wiki is hosted just so they can join the rest of the crowds shitting on fandom (deserved)
How many of you commenters actually make frequent use of the wiki and aren’t just using this op to bitch and moan. Can’t wait for Reddit 2.0 here on lemmy.
Edit: cool downvote brigade, the point remains, if you’re not using an adblocker that’s on you. And if you are, then you didn’t have an issue with fandom. There’s a million other wikis out there that were just as good if not better, and y’all know it.
You just want to shit on stuff like everyone else. Seems weird to me, so many other things to care about.
It’s the internet, the information issues everywhere. I’d rather give the dude with 100 views on YouTube a visit than any whack ass wiki site their traffic. _(o_o)_/ sorry i guess
Whenever I’m playing minecraft, so each time after it gets an update. However I have uBlock Origin so I didn’t even know it had ads
Appreciate your input, was targeting the handful of people on the comments who are using an article as an excuse to continue pointless negative bitching
Wikis are Uber helpful, esp when you’re doing mod packs or they update game mechanics (mob spawning, I’m looking at you, ya cheeky fuck)
My main point here overall is that fandom wasn’t nearly as bad as everyone leads on and I’m sick and tired of negative echo chambers where people bitch just to bitch and claim that their venting is somehow equivalent to objective fact and not what it is: venting frustrations that extend far out of the reach of a fucking Minecraft wiki with some ads no worse than the most popular social media platforms.
I’m also confused by the odd replies in this thread. Four different people used a very specific and unique choice of words to describe Fandom that reeks of either fake accounts using copy/paste or they’re real people echoing the exact words some influencer told them to believe. In either case it’s not a genuine conversation going on here.
The alternatives I’ve seen multiple wikis move to from Fandom have all been better from my experience and that’s a good thing. But shooting down Fandom because you’re stuck in a bubble of fake comments or just hearing one opinion from a loud youtuber repeated over and over by their fans, it doesn’t give us a real discussion or make any of us more informed on the topic. It’s disappointing even if the end result is better wikis.
This
People are going to talk about what they want to talk about, do you really think you can change that?
Did you just now?
Nope!
You’ve got your answer then
I usually consult the wiki multiple times during any Minecraft session, and I have been frustrated with it ever since they moved to fandom. Back in the day it was a standalone wiki and then at some point after beta it was enshittified. So I’m super excited about this change because it is a huge QOL change to my Minecraft experience
May I ask what you were frustrated with Fandom about specifically?
intrusive ad popups and autoplaying video ads, though this was mitigated when i switched to a mobile browser with ad blocking capabilities
Yeah ads have gotten out of hand on a lot of websites I feel like.
Thank fuck for plugins and extensions for adblocking and script blocking
Fandom is an ad-ridden shithole
Is it that, or just the reverse?
Yeah, it’s a shit-ridden ad hole.
I have been using it a lot lately, I did not know about that thanks to Firefox + Ublock
Yeah as another Firefox + Ublock Origin user, I came in here to say I’ve noticed a lot of game wikis announcing they’re migrating off of Fandom, and I’m curious as to why. I’m OoTL.
The whole internet is like this though
That’s why we use adblockers man
There’s a chrome extension that will redirect all your fandom traffic to breeze wiki or alternative wikis.
As a former chrome user who Migrated to firefox
Firefox is better than chrome
Hell yeah, fandom needs to be abandoned its an ad riddled shithole
Going to a site with a terrible autoplay pseudo-podcast that refreshes on every new page is basically the MySpace experience. It’s incredibly difficult, by the way, for small projects to have their wikis deleted and wiki site staff are less than helpful. Always nice for a defunct wiki to rise to the top of search results when the project website hosts quite a bit more identically formatted information but without random penis based articles. I love that.
Can you tell me more about these penis based articles?
Penis magic became quite varied and popular in the forgotten realms for a time.
Good.
It’s reached the point (or had a couple of years ago, which was the last time I went to a wiki hosted there) that it’s virtually impossible to even read an entry, since there are so many ads that the actual text of the article spends more time off the screen than on it.
IMO the worst part is the ads that auto-scroll you to the top of the page after you’ve spent two minutes reading

A big win for the Minecraft community. The wiki experience had gone seriously downhill after Fandom took over.
Hell yes, fuck fandom they’ve ruined so many of the best wikis
If you have to access wikis from fandom, you can use breezewiki
ooh, they even have an extension to automatically redirect as well, very nice

Nice! I’ve been wondering what the outcome of this was
Fandom has since become one of my least favorite websites, simply because of the ads, and the “Honest Trailers” videos that automatically show up (and follow you) regardless of the topic of the page you’re on, not to mention that their mobile site is pure garbage. It’s just pure garbage, alright.
And I’m a person who browses Logopedia regularly, which is still hosted on Fandom. Boo. Thank goodness the Minecraft Wiki left that.
May I ask how this website is any different from every other website that crams ads down your throat?
I mean for ffs, twitch bakes them into the streams now. YouTubers do their own ads in their videos. Don’t even get me started on social media sites.
If Twitter wasn’t a cesspool you better believe Elon would’ve packed that mother fucker to the brim with ads.
Fandom isn’t a social media platform. All these others are (at least for the most part).
I’m not arguing that tho. Im not arguing what makes random different from social media sites.
For example news sites are also littered with ads. Porn sites, littered with ads. Blog sites, littered with ads. Google searches even come up with search result ads.
It’s everywhere man, I’m just arguing that fandom is no worse than anywhere else.
But yes, switching to respectful amounts of ads or none at all if possible is preferable to what fandom is right now.
My original comment is just pointing out that I don’t really think anyone actually cares that much about this stuff, and that I personally dont like all these negative echo chambers everywhere.
Everyone’s obviously valid in venting and what not, but I figured I’d point out my viewpoint too while we’re at it 🤷🏻♂️
Mashallah
alhamdulillah brother
Inshallah all other sites will move off of fandom too
Amen 🤲🤲🤲
Legendary
Good to hear! I love that the path of exile community did similar.
The Minecraft wiki used to be it’s own thing before moving to Fandom didn’t it? Either way, very happy about this
I’m glad I’m not the only one who remembers. I wasn’t very thrilled about the change…

The Terraria wiki is hosted on wiki.gg, which the Minecraft wiki editors strongly considered (reading through the discussion, it seemed like a strong second choice behind Weird Gloop/RuneScape wiki). But wiki.gg really has a lot of the same problems as fandom, just to a lesser degree. Still has a fair amount of ads, still has wiki.gg branding on the website, and most importantly in the discussions I read, they wouldn’t be able to use a domain the Minecraft wiki owns (as in it wold have been at minecraft.wiki.gg rather than minecraft.wiki). The big problem with not having their own domain is that if things ever go south with wiki.gg (for example if they get bought by Fandom), they would be starting from scratch as far as SEO/discoverability goes, same as they are now.
Weird Gloop (the host for the RuneScape wikis) offered fewer ads, a comparable hosting infrastructure, and the ability to use their own domain, as well as a lot of experience forking from fandom successfully, which sounds like it was really valuable to them.
It should be noted that Weird Gloop purchased the
minecraft.wiki
domain, leading me to assume that they currently claim ownership of it.I hope the wiki team will be able to keep the domain of things really do go south with Weird Gloop.
That’s surprising given the discussions I read, but you’re right, a quick WHOIS search shows Weird Gloop as the owner. I’m not quite sure why that is.
Yeah, they were previously hosted by Curse until Fandom bought out all the Curse wikis and transferred them to their ad-ridden pile of shit
Yes, it was great back then. I really enjoyed using it until they switched over to Fandom. So glad they got rid of it again.
Yes!!! Everyone should abandon that ad-riddled shithole
Surprised anyone can use the internet without uBlock Origin tbh
I used a browser on someone else’s computer recently and was shocked at all the advertisements on sites I frequent. It really is a game-changer.
uBlock won’t save you in steam overlay browser.
Setup a Pihole and never face this issue again. Blocks ads at dns level which doesn’t get everything but gets the majority of ads.
All you need to do is make sure to keep the lil guy updated. You can even view your traffic and see which ads aren’t getting caught and manually add those domains.
Lastly, you play minecraft in steam? What is wrong with you 😝
For that there’s other ways buy honestly I almost never use it
I only just switched over to firefox + UBO on my phone, and it’s so much better. I had just assumed that the beautiful ad-free experience I get on my PC wasn’t available on phone, but by jove it is.
U matrix is also a great option, it takes original to the max and lets you automatically allow list or deny list specific domains and their components (html, css, JavaScript, cookies, frames, and xhr(i think that was the last option not sure)
It also lets you block mixed content, referrer information and a lot more. It’s been incredibly helpful
I just use a different adblock ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Yeah still, the point is how tf do people tolerate the Internet with all the ads.
You should really use ublock
Ublock origin, not ublock.
Ublock origin is the best adblocker.
ublock is a different thing thats no bueno
Yea I meant origin
Why? Mine works just fine, and diversity is strength against countermeasures.
Eh you do you
This is great news. The old site really went to shit the last few years, especially on mobile, with ads using >50% of the screen.
