Doom (2016) just launched on GOG, and it’s on offer. I purchased straight away as I really enjoyed this one. Wasn’t expecting to see more Bethesda games on GOG after Microsoft purchases Zenimax.

GOG has always had support for Linux.

Do you mean the waste of disk space called GOG Galaxy?

Not always, they only started to offer Linux support after Steam, and even then it’s just a very small part of their catalog and none of their own games/products, so I think it’s fair to say they don’t offer Linux support but sell some products that do.

You’re not alone, I loved 2016, but I couldn’t finish Eternal. All that platforming diluted the essence that made Doom fun IMO.

Tell me more, why for you is that the case?

I think doom 2016 does theme/story and just the over all ‘fantasy’ of being the doomguy WAY better. I really missed it in Doom:E. However I do really enjoy the way they built the gameplay loop into this frantic dance of violence.

Agreed about the story. What I didn’t like in DE was the transparently arbitrary gameplay loop. You can’t punch enemies to death anymore, and your flamethrower instead of doing damage causes… items to appear. All are obviously in service of a gameplay loop, but they are terribly contrived. I wouldn’t say I go into Doom for immersion, but c’mon.

How is Doom 2016 better in that regard? Just because the options aren’t there?

You can also still play Doom Eternal like the 2016 version. It’s gonna be harder, but I basically did in my first playthrough.

It’s been a while since I’ve played it, but as I recall, melee combat worked very differently and much more intuitively in 2016. It’s always there in case you run out of ammo.

I just re-played both games in anticipation for Dark Ages.

Doom 2016 only has pickups and chainsaw kill, with limited fuel, to get ammo. There’s also a rune for “infinite ammo,” and also the Pistol, with infinite ammo.

Eternal is the same, just that the Chainsaw always refills one charge (and no unlimited ammo rune). That’s why you get like half (or less) max ammo in the Eternal, compared to 2016, because you’re supposed to chainsaw a demon every 30s or something. Also, probably no Pistol because of that.

The straight-up melee does some damage in 2016, like the old games. You could theoretically punch everything to death.

In Eternal, I think it deals no damage at all, and it’s just there for the Glory Kill, but you get a special punch for a big damage AoE melee attack.

Glory Kills (melee finishers/execute) on low health demons are the same in both games, there to look cool and give you health.

BTW, I’m not saying you’re wrong for liking Doom 2016 more than Eternal. Some people don’t want to do the whole song and dance of jumping, dashing, swing bars, quick switch weapons, flamethrower, grenade, grapple, punch, chainsaw, whatever. I like it a lot, and it makes the game a lot more fun for me, compared to the more simple Doom 2016.

Right, it’s the fact that melee does no damage in Doom Eternal which I find aggravating. It worked just fine in 2016 as a last resort. They clearly removed its ability to deal any damage in order to force the player to engage with the flamethrower mechanic, which provides ammo (and also does no damage). It seems to me like clumsy design – it achieves the desired gameplay loop, but in the most heavy-handed way imaginable. Fun gameplay loop sure, but zero effort to justify it with what’s happening visually on screen.

I did enjoy the combat ballet though; in particular, it was fun to be always switching weapons. I just found myself often shaking my head because it’s so contrived how it’s implemented specifically. I’m sure most people didn’t care, but it did pull me out of it.

Also, I couldn’t understand the plot in Eternal whatsoever. Am I supposed to be saving Earth? It sure doesn’t feel like Doom Guy gives a damn. He’s just there to do some kind of prophecy I didn’t really find myself pulled into. In contrast, 2016 is punctuated sporadically by plot points I at least understood and felt some amount of motivation for. Take, for instance, the scene where Mr. Glados says “don’t dismantle the power generator things! They’re really expensive!” And Doom Guy is like: “IDGAF. Demons bad.” Best scene in the whole franchise if you ask me. (I’ll admit, some of the dialogue moments that lock you into a room are way too long though.)

My biggest issue with Eternal was that it seemed like keeping the story consistent wasn’t a priority.

I always liked the idea of doomguy, an absurd character, being grounded in a little lore and just playing around with him decimating any kind of plot a villian was comming up with.

Doom:E seemed to build a bunch of lore that no one was really asking for. Does anyone really want to know “Who was doom guy?” I didn’t. I really enjoyed him being barely a character, more a force of nature trying to eridicate demons. Rip & tear!

This does not include the multiplayer. I’m sure it wasn’t the selling point for most, but I hate how the multiplayer use case isn’t well taken care of on GOG. I don’t want Galaxy required; I just want developers to put a bit of work into putting LAN into their games again.

@ampersandrew More annoying to my mind than the lack of MP is lack of SnapMap. Like you said, may not have been the selling point for most, but given Doom’s legacy is as much courtesy of user created stuff as it is its technical contributions, it’s a big loss to not have that.

Tempted to see if there’s a way to hack SnapMap back in to a degree so people could still play backed up custom maps (which exist thanks to dedicated modders hacking & extending SnapMap functionality).

I never played the game, so I’m not sure what SnapMap is (Fandom says it’s a map editor), but there is a note in the “Details” that says SnapMap cosmetics are unlocked by default. Is that something else?

SnapMap is a built-in map editor. It lets you build simple maps made of prefab rooms. It’s clunky and very limited. Really nothing particularly interesting considering the history of OG Doom’s decades-old fan-made map scene.

@spizzat2 It is, the cosmetics were unlockables via SnapMap, providing some ways you can customize the look of the Doom Guy/Doom Slayer.

SnapMap was Doom 2016’s limited level creator basically. Not proper mod tools unfortunately, but an okay compromise compared to nothing at all.

It was what sold me on the game, but I’m a sucker for accessible level editing and the like tools in games.

Also it opens up the ability to play network multiplayer regardless of the presence of someone else’s server on the other end. The lack of LAN or direct IP connections is just DRM by another name.

I remember the multiplayer almost killed this game. They had an early beta of the MP and it was a lukewarm reception. I personally tried it and thought it was ehhh. Then it released and everyone raved about the single player.

I don’t think the setup for Doom 16 would be particularly doable over LAN without rebuilding the game or giving you the server code. Servers are doing a LOT of work in this.

I meant binaries. Open source would be great, but it’s a tough sell for some reason, even though Doom’s been open source for decades and still sells copies to this day.

MudMan

Sure! I mean, why not? Hell, release the game DRM free in the first place on all platforms, huh? Why did we have to wait a decade and buy it twice before we could get the DRM version of any part of it, after all?

But you weren’t complaining about it yesterday and you’re way closer to the right outcome today. I would much rather have a DRM free version of some part of that game than not.

Oh lame. The multiplayer is the only thing I’d wanna try. I didn’t actually like the game, personally. Just not a fan of the wave-shooter setup.

Wait, wouldn’t the multiplayer essentially be unreal tournament, but with less diversity? Never played doom’s online, so I have no clue.

I don’t know; I only tried the game via the demo, which didn’t have any multiplayer. I thought it would basically be like the OG Doom’s deathmatch.

I have played Eternal’s multiplayer on PS+ because it’s in the catalogue. It was… Weird. Though I thought it sounded pretty cool that you can be a demon in it. It wasn’t actually that fun.

MudMan
link
fedilink
57d

Nobody did. It was one of this weird wave of interesting multiplayer setups that just didn’t have the competitive cleanness of the established stuff and nobody ended up caring about.

It was midly interesting to try out once, but let’s say there’s a reason they didn’t do a MP mode in the sequel and every reviewer praised that choice.

they didn’t do a MP mode in the sequel

What? Eternal has multiplayer. They’re mostly assymetrical modes, like the one where you can play as the demons.

Or do you mean the second sequel (Dark Ages)?

MudMan

27d

Wait, does it? Oh, man, it does! I actively remember the praise, where did I get so much Mandela effect from this? I didn’t even think to look it up, I was so certain.

In any case, here’s to being actively wrong and still having made your point. Eternal is the lesser game in general, and I have played it much less, but it’s still telling I straight up forgot and invented an alternate scenario about it.

I reckon this is a really good game, and it’s great to see it on GOG.

Missing features always feels bad though, even if those features are not important. (The multiplayer modes are ok, but the playerbase isn’t there anymore anyway. I never used snapmap at all.) But it’s kind of a philosophical thing. Missing features just make it feel like a worse. But on the other hand GOG does have one cool feature compared to the previous release: DRM free. Not as visible, but perhaps more important.

(I still probably won’t buy it on GOG though, because I don’t love the game so much that I need a second copy.)

Bought. I want to encourage companies to ditch DRM. It will be a major cockblock if America suffers a civil war, since internet and companies will be in disarray. If I end up becoming a soldier, being able to play games without compromising security would be much appreciated, in all the ways.
