Also here for NMS and building Corvette class ships!

American Truck Simulator and Euro Truck Simulator 2 at the moment, finally with head tracking! It’s so much better, to the point that I would find it hard to go back.

I’m playing Sub-Nautica literally bc there was a post on c/SteamDeals on Lemmy that I listened to and am actually enjoying it so much!

That’s a game that I enjoy so much I’ve had it for years and played for hours and hours …and still haven’t beat it. I just love swimming and building in it.

I got really deep into Caves of Qud (classic rogue like) after initially dropping it for being too difficult. It has a bit of a learning curve, but beyond that, it is really fun. Very engaging sci-fi fantasy world, lots of interesting things to do or see, some fun random quirks/jank, and very diverse character customization. I think what I love the most is that it’s a knowledge game, where you excel by learning some bits and tricks here and there, like the effects of cooking with certain ingredients or getting some special items with an important effect (aka cheesing stuff).

Also besides being a very hard roguelike, it is really chill in a way (also helpt by the music).

If you do have struggles with it, I can recommend giving roleplaying mode a spin, where you don’t have permadeath, or there is a website called qudzoo with some seriously good advice.

The writing is seriously good. I enjoy just reading random furniture descriptions.

The only reason I haven’t beaten it yet is that it feels repetitive since the main story and certain profitable side quests are always the same.

While some RNG like the faction relationships add great and flavorful variety, others like the medicine recipes are technically different every time but it doesn’t matter.

They announced some upcoming expansions, I wonder if one of those would address the “story always the same” part, since that does seem to be a common criticism

Alan Wake

Putting the finishing touches on Alan Wake (the really old one). I‘m not much of a horror guy (and it‘s not much of a horror game), so mainly the story kept me going lol. Probably just gonna watch a playthrough of 2 to know how it continues.

Peak

Otherwise, I‘ve been playing some Peak with my gf and I really like it. The generated levels keep it fresh, the swap out only every 24 hrs gives ample opportunity to get familiar with the mountain. I wish it had DLSS and/or FSR though, the performance is abysmal for what it‘s rendering, the integrated „scaler“ looks pretty poor. My PC‘s screaming when I play this for no apparent reason lol

Peak is a peak example of a trending game.
We’re also playing it. And we know other couples playing it too.

It came out of no where, is a bunch of fun, and will be forgotten about in a couple weeks.

Alan Wake 2 is one of my favourite games of all time, and if you like the story it’s definitely worth considering playing. Yes, it is a bit more of a horror game, but it’s phenomenal. I recommend watching a recap of Control and its AWE DLC, as they directly tie into the plot of Alan Wake 2. Or just play them, Control is also a great game.

If you really truly can’t stomach horror games, both Welonz and Mapocolops have great AW2 playthroughs.

Control is also a great game.

Second this. The Ashtray Maze is still one of the coolest levels in a game for me.

Been playing through The Messenger again. Still an amazing game.

Also picked up No Man’s Sky again to build the Corvette class ships, build up some settlements, and collect some of the newer cosmetic building items. It’s impressive how much love has gone into that game, and it gives me a chuckle that it now has basically everything Star Citizen has (ships with walkable interiors, food, planet exploration, space combat, main quests, etc.).

I’ve been playing Project Silverfish and having a blast it is Scaly STALKER.

Control. It’s weird, which is a big plus in my book, the puzzles are a nice level of trickiness for casual gaming, and I’m really enjoying how the gameplay develops

Been playing Cardinal Quest 2. It’s such a joy to come back to this game again every few years. Aside from perhaps DoomRL, it’s my favorite coffeebreak roguelike.

It’s got such excellent graphics and audio compared to the rest of the genre. The environments (many being outdoors) are much more interesting than your typical dungeon. The classes are quite good and even within a class there is plenty of variety with the skills and talents you take.

The achievement system is great for giving you stuff to do and unlock besides just winning. Itemization is on point for a game with runs that last half an hour. Never tedious, usually impactful.

Wow. First search result was for Kongregate. That brought back some memories.

Vampire Survivors’s Ode to Castlevania DLC

It’s so fun to see them actually get to use the IP VS was inspired from, and the DLC is absolutely a love letter to all of Castlevania, including some of the more obscure characters in the lore. The DLC has roughly double the content of the base game, with at least three big “unlock/events” locking more layers of content behind them. Tons of new playable characters, tons of new weapons, one new massive map with its own unique mechanics and progression, and so much classic Castlevania music and remixes. Totally worth it.

I’m back on the Xcom 2 kick. Almost at 2k hours lol

There’s a Warhammer 40k game like xcom called Machanicus that im downloading right now. I really want the Owlcat Warhammer rpg, but $44+ is a little step at the moment.

Oof. Mechanicus starts out ok, even has some cool mechanics but then gets utterly trivial and just keeps going like that.

Are you playing modded Xcom? I enjoyed a run with amalgamation classes, gem-based psi and lots of mods to make the enemies harder but it has been shelved for a while because the Humanity’s requiem Mutons are too much to take on and I need to think about how much to sacrifice to pass missions until my weapon upgrade finishes.

Started playing the Witcher. Gonna try to play through all three in order. Picked them up for cheap or free a while ago, never got to them until now. So far, it feels a little clunky, but the aesthetic is great.

The first Witcher definitely has clunky controls. But 3 is a masterpiece. 2 falls somewhere in between.

I think 2 is almost equally or more of a masterpiece as 3 when considering how extremely rare truly branching path story games are.

In that sense yes, but IMO it falls a little bit short on multiple fronts.

That was my general impression, which is why I figured I’d play them in order. Going back might be less fun.

DCSS again. It’s a 30 minutes or less roguelike if you suck as bad as I do so give it a try if you’re looking for something like that. I got about 10 other games in the queue that I can’t quite myself to start like POE2(replay, I know it’s good game).

Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown

I’ve been trying to power through the game since last week. To be completely honest I’m not having a great time with this one (key word being “great” here).

It’s fun at times and a good game from a production standpoint but I end up playing in pretty short session because it can’t keep me interested otherwise. It’s a stark contrast to Project Wingman, where I pretty much binged through the whole thing twice (including DLC) and still want more. I’m slowly progressing but man, it’s night and day between the two games.

I more or less got my input settings to what I’m used to (sans deadzone and sensitivity settings but it’s still better than nothing) and got over most of my issues with how it plays so things are a bit better now.

Concepts for the missions are interesting and varied so far which is great, I’m a bit mixed on the execution though as there’s not a single mission that didn’t have something annoying in it. I have a similar sentiment towards ship upgrade tree - a neat idea, alright execution. I don’t hate any of this at least.

Story is… fine. The constant waffling about “sins” and how “you’re all expendable”/“you can die for all I care”/“you have my permission to crash” (that’s why we put you into extremely expensive machines armed to the teeth) mixed with the pretty common Japanese way of writing dialogues (person 1 say X, person 2 repeats it) got grating pretty quickly. At least it’s not a permanent focus of the game so there’s that.
There might be something a bit more interesting lurking in the background but I’ll have to see how things play out first to be convinced.

On the “good” good side of things I really liked the thunderstorm mission gimmick, where getting hit by lightning is not only possible but it also affects gameplay in a significant way (disrupting the HUD and temporarily cutting off your controls). In general, the way they treat clouds as part of gameplay is actually pretty cool (targeting wise, not the icing). They also look pretty great.
Besides the already mentioned mission variety, I also liked the callback to AC04 - it was a nice surprise as initially I didn’t realise both games are connected (it’s been a few years since my playthrough of 04 and even then my familiarity with AC franchise is pretty limited).

All in all, the game constantly edges on the brink of clicking with me, only to pull something annoying that brings it right back to making me feel mixed about it. I want to like it more, I really do but alas, so far it wasn’t meant to be.

Persona 3 Portable

Not much to write about today as I mostly focused on AC7 and only did some light grinding to get all current party members to the same level. I’ll most likely switch full time to Persona once I’m done with the fly-boy campaign but for a few more days it’ll have to wait.
