It seems Game Informer’s death was… Greatly exaggerated

They completely omitted the fact that their new parent company, Gunzilla Games, make crappy NFT/crypto games that have been banned from Steam.

True, but supposedly they have full and complete editorial independence and control so we’ll see how that shakes out…

I understand that they may never go to magazines but if GameInformer wants to give IGN and GameSpot some gaming journalist competition I’m all for it

They could make good money on the nostalgia crowd with reprints.

I’d love a print of the advertising and coverage for Morrowind.

I’ve been getting a major kick out of the retro games community!

They’re reviewing old games, reviewing new games that look/act retro, interviewing designers of old games. It’s glorious.

I never cared for game informer. It always felt like GameStop was trying to shill it in order to sell subscriptions to a magazine that’s basically a giant advertisement for GameStop.

Gimme those cooler magazines. Game Pro, Nintendo Power, PSM etc.

I understand what you’re saying about Game Informer, but it’s hilarious you name Nintendo Power and PSM as alternatives, considering that.

Yeah but all least they weren’t being forced on you

Most magazines are just ads.

Game Informer always felt like the cheap knockoff to Electronic Gaming Monthly.

You don’t want a magazine that’s adverts but you like Nintendo Power and PSM…

Those were the best ads tho. Game informer was just a GameStop ad. And GameStop always made me feel bad.

So you like ads, just not GameStop ads? I mean, GI had a lot of info about games, too. Beyond Nintendo and PS, you could actually learn about PC games.

Interesting that the District 9 director is involved with the parent company.

I thought Game Informer had some cool stuff. I really liked the second opinion on reviews, that tiny box inside the full review. It was fun to pick a side when they were at odds.

People are into vinyl and tube TVs again. Barnes & Noble just opened a huge branch in a hot (meaning: expensive) neighborhood here in Chicago. I guess people like physical things again.

I see it in a different light. The people that were raised on digital goods finally have the money to purchase physical goods.

Just enough money to buy some physical goods, but not enough to buy so many that storage becomes a problem…

Might be both. I know a couple of 20s that love physical media. Its crazy to think about, but they stated their childhood was mostly screens and rectangles. They both like Vinyl which is crazy to me. They are working their first jobs too.

I think people are catching on to these digital services can remove things you bought or they even fold. You own a physical item it is yours to do as you please with it

Damn, can we escape the encroaching hellscape by transporting everyone back to 1998? 🫰

Yes please. To quote time traveling reporter Ryan George “PLEASE bring me back to the 90s! The future is dumb, and nothing makes sense, and I hate it!”

Oh man. If you think game dev has been having a rough go of it lately, games media was already a smoking crater before all the waves of dev layoffs began. Now GI wants to dive back in and restart their print offering too? There are a bunch of good people over there and I’m happy they’re getting another chance unshackled from GameStop, but woof. Good luck!

I really liked GI and i was saddened by their closure. Quality journalism (gaming and elsewhere) is dying, substituted by AI slop, paid influencers and clickbait articles.

Hopefully a few of the good ones remain. This is a step in the right direction.
