OG steamdeck, which I retired and never used much.

OLED steamdeck has been life changing however, much much better battery. Between that and lack of oled screen switch 2 is a big miss.

I mean it’s your money, but if you already have a portable handheld with better screen, better battery, and that can run the whole of the steam catalogue… why spend $450 (or whatever) on the Mario Machine, is it just for the exclusives?

@[email protected]

I and my kids value the exclusives, especially Smash Brothers, Mario Kart, Zelda, and Kirby. I could emulate those, but getting local multiplayer working is tricky and not something I expect my kids to do with their friends. We also share games with neighbors, which is nice too.

Most of my time and gaming money goes to my Steam Deck, because that’s what I play when the kids go to bed. In fact, I never play the Switch without my kids watching. We have maybe 20 Switch games, and I have hundreds of Steam games. I see value in both ecosystems.

Depending on the game, I can get 4 hours or so on my OG Steam Deck, but AAA games can burn through it in under 2 hours.

I read it after a day of train travel with Switch 2 so that article hit a nail on the head for me although you’d be hard pressed to get just 2 hours, more like 2,5h for heavy titles with WiFi. Zelda TOTK could be stretched to almost 3h in the airplane mode with brightness slider in the middle. Very similar to Switch v1/Erista that I never upgraded out of because it’s so easy to hack.

The switch 2 is overall a real bummer. I don’t understand why people are buying it, the only real “reason” is the exclusive games, but I’m happy to wait for emulation to be available. I can already play the original switch games on my steamdeck.

@[email protected]

People are buying it because they love Nintendo games like you said. It’s also because most people don’t know enough to emulate/are scared off by anti piracy laws.

Another reason is that people are impatient, if the price dropped I would be tempted to buy one, especially if they also announce a new 3d mario (odyssey is one of my favourite games of all time). I’d want to play it now and not wait for the switch 2 to be hacked.

A lot of people who know how to emulate also would rather buy original hardware because playing on it is just better (I’m the same, if the joycons didn’t drift, I probably wouldn’t emulate my switch 1 games on my deck)

I’ll probably get one eventually, but I’m in no rush. We still have lots of Switch games to play, and nothing yet is a must have. Now, if they make a great Zelda game or something, maybe I’ll be convinced.

Most of my gaming is on PC or Steam Deck, so the Switch is mostly for my kids and family game time. So as long as the OG fulfills that purpose, I’m not upgrading.

Steam Deck is overall a real bummer. I don’t understand why people are buying it, the only real “reason” is the exclusive games, of which there are none. I’m happy to wait for Portal 3 to be available on Nintendo Switch 8. I can already play the original PC games on my Switch with no Proton that can break when a game is patched because pretty much everything gets ported.

I commited a blasphemy against a huge digital store with a monopoly that drives prices up in their niche, an unforgivable offence amongst PC gamers.

Lol you have no clue what you’re talking about bud.

Steam doesn’t force any of the games sold on its storefront to be exclusive to their store. Developers are completely within their power to publish their games to other marketplaces and, in fact, many titles are readily available elsewhere, such as GOG, Humble Bundle, Jolt, itch.io, Epic, and soon even Discord will have its own storefront. They are simply a marketplace; they don’t have a monopoly just because they are the most popular marketplace. Not their fault developers don’t like the non-DRM pushing spaces, which is the only complaint I have with Steam.

Meanwhile, you’re comparing that to Nintendo which develops games in-house and deliberately keeps them exclusive to their proprietary consoles. Last I checked, I can’t buy the new Mario Kart or Donkey Kong on my PS5 or PC.

You sound very confident for being wrong, which is about par for the course for libertarians. I won’t hold it against you, you probably don’t know any better.

Nintendo actually makes games to sell their hardware. I like companies that make games, games are fun. I won’t and didn’t defend Nintendo when they do shitty stuff.

Valve coasts on having a monopoly and works mostly on digital casinos these days. Having irrelevant competition doesn’t mean you don’t have a monopoly, you just need a dominant position that allows you to leverage it to hold on to it. It would be okay if they were some benevolent dictator but they use it to sell gambling apps to children while charging 30% for the privilege of selling your games on their store. Games would be cheaper if Valve didn’t have a monopoly.

I like companies that make games, sure, but I also like companies that make it easier for me to play games, which Valve does. You can use Steam OS to play PC games you got from anywhere and the Steam Deck is a handheld PC that provides a console-like experience. You’re too hung up on Steam itself, which you don’t even have to buy into at all to use a Steam Deck to play games.

I use my Steam Deck primarily for emulation, especially Nintendo IP. NDS, 3DS, N64, Gamecube, Switch. It’s the best Nintendo device that I’ve ever owned and it hasn’t been bricked or even threatened with such.

N64/GC sure (if you’re okay with letterboxed screen) although not the most efficient use of battery. Switch is debatable since compatibility is not there and won’t improve anytime soon. With DS/3DS you must be joking, it’s a different form factor entirely.

Do yourself a favour and get a DS Lite and a flashcart, they’re dirt cheap and it’s just super convenient device. I’d say the same for 3DS but they are ridiculously expensive these days for some reason, glad I got mine years ago. Some games really utilised that 3D screen for spatial puzzles and such (like Mario 3D Land), not really easy to reproduce so that’s a bummer.

I’ve been playing Switch games just fine on my SD. Currently enjoying Fire Emblem Engage which runs flawlessly, Three Houses also runs well. The same is true for many (most?) of the Switch library. I already have a 3DS but the Steam Deck can handle those games too. Likewise NDS games. I only play a handful of games on each system. It’s convenient to have my entire game library on one device, especially on the road.

I don’t hate on anyone, I literally have some hardware from all of the major companies. It’s possible to have different opinions on different things they do. They are products of corporations that are so huge and internally disconnected that end result can be inconsistent so that’s just how things are. Of course all exist for profit so I rarely get angry with consequences of capitalism unless taken to extreme.

Today’s Valve is scummiest of all, very little redeeming qualities and that’s my honest opinion, not being contrarian. It irks me doubly because they are so idolised. Valve monopolised PC digital storefronts. They don’t make games, they make digital casinos. They market those casinos to children. They have a history of abandoning things. The only reason they fund Wine development is to safeguard and entrench their monopoly even further. It was CodeWeavers and not Valve that sponsored Wine development through difficult times. In 10-15 years, if they are successful in their plans, they’ll turn SteamOS into something like modern day Android, another locked down platform with no major benefit to desktop Linux. I’ll be there with „told you so” but that actually gives me no kick.

The article’e author hopes for battery improvements. The entire technology sector wants this. Bigger screen and more powerful uses more battery. 5220ah compared to switch 4310ah. Don’t hold your breath waiting for a bigger battery. Also there has been numerous articles on what you need to change to greatly improve the battery time. Another negative switch 2 article for a great selling system that many people enjoy.
