A horror developer is giving her new game away for free after its planned launch was ruined by Steam's recent game bans.

various developers have either offered free versions of their games or moved to selling them directly from their own websites while they remain delisted elsewhere.

I wonder if there’s some way to aggregate or maintain an index of these

We could offer easy remote play and gentle drm to woo developers to it. Perhaps we could even be the payment processor to make it convenient for everyone, almost like a virtual game store

i had decided i was going to only buy PC games from GOG for reasons, but now I feel like i actually have valid reasons instead of emotional ones.

I Like GOG But i find Steam its Easier to buy games(you can find giftcards).I perfer to buy all my games from one place and i like their client more(like the built in web browser,Chatting and groups features,Communities, etc)
the only think i dont like about Steam client really is its UI and UX and its a memory hog thanks to CEF
What i like about GOG you dont need its client or any client open while in game(like you can choose a client that is written in GTK),you actually own the game and DRM-FREE.

GOG also has more classics and does some work on them (together with the communities) so they run better on modern systems.

Never knew that but sounds pretty cool also great for preservation.

I like GOG but I don’t like the people who own it. I felt like I was someone’s fetish after I heard about the cosplay contest

Steam’s moderation just hit oppressive levels, and its staff banning/removing submissions that don’t break guidelines while lying about the reason is Reddit-level. Please Steam, you can stop being cunts. You can return from this.

You… do know that Steam isn’t the issue here, right? It’s Visa and Mastercard that are being cunts

Well yes, and Steam is continuing to censor and damage its reputation as the best gamer’s market, as a conduit of free expression. It’s possible they are continuously pressured and were told to remove this, but they can also say no. Valve can have moral standards, and they can prove they’re not part of the problem by being transparent and ensuring that they do not help usher in a terrible, oppressive future.

But then they go out of business when 90% of their customers are no longer able to buy anything.

It’s an absolute lose-lose type of situation, unfortunately.

That’s just for this issue right now in particular but they’ve had instances where supposedly an overzealous employee was going around banning anime-like games a few years back with no explanation.

i mean, yes, but how far is just valve overreacting? i am usually cool with valve but i don’t worship them or anything

It’s not overreacting. Valve has to guess what Mastercard finds objectionable and what not. Guess wrong, and Mastercard could ban them.

MasterCard probably makes too much money from Steam to permanently ban them.

Maybe, but would you risk it? Also, there’s a payment processor in between. Like Valve, the payment processor needs to guess what Mastercard finds objectionable.

Honestly, yes. If they’re having to guess what is or isn’t allowed, it’s only a matter of time until it actually happens.

And sure, having a Visa influences my stance on what Valve should do! Haha

Look, I get it. I really do. But that doesn’t excuse them lying about it.

Edit: Did y’all not read the article?

According to developer Cara Cadaver, Steam pulled the game for “sexual content with depictions of real people,” which the game does not contain.

Does not necessarily follow that they’re lying. It sounds like there’s some kind of NSFW content, and FMV is mentioned. As we’ve noted over and over by now, one person’s NSFW is another person’s art. The problem is that Steam is being forced to make these decisions when they shouldn’t have to.
