I guess someone threatening you with a lawsuit stings a lot more when there’s a chance they could actually win. Typically when my office gets threatened with a lawsuit, we all just laugh and laugh at the absurdity of their claims.

Nah, it’s scary when the entity threatening you with a lawsuit has enough resources to bury you under paperwork and drag a legal battle that’ll hurt your business for years even if they have no chance of actually winning the suit.

I have a feeling if the suite came from a company as big as Nintendo people wouldn’t be laughing.

Cyberpunk corporate wars becoming reality.

You laugh but it just enables private militaries aka private police

Those are from the beginning of corporations, we don’t need to look to speculative fiction. The British East India Company waged literal war against rival corporations.

Definitely agree, but some people remain ignorant of that part of history, so you gotta use fiction to let them know that art mimics reality and that supposed fictional dystopias are here if you look close enough, and will absolutely be here if we don’t realize it soon

I remember when armed Pinkertons were sent to a normal guys house by a corporation for having a few pieces of paper with stolen artwork on them only a year ago.

Some guy got some magic the gathering cards early so wizards of the coast did what any reasonable group of people would do and violently intimidated the guy until he gave up his goods.

Don’t forget about the dude that was stealing full art secret rare Pokemon cards off the factory floor and selling them at card shows

Can I request linking the original source over Eurogamer clickbait trash?

Case in point:

We were just about to release the PlayStation version, we were just about to go to Tokyo Game Show, so obviously we had to scale back a little bit and hire security guards and stuff like that."

Eurogamer makes it sounds like Nintendo was gonna send ninjas after them, while it was actually to protect them from getting harassed by rabid Nintendo fans.

Not saying that makes it any better but there is a big difference.

Thanks! It was more a request for the next article, not so much this one. But it is indeed great that we can edit posts after submission :)

Wait, wait, wait… Eurogamer stole it from PC Gamer?

That’s rich. Especially since it’s a barely a page long, and is just a very loose summary of what was said in a GDC talk. I’m sure they’ll drip-feed tidbits as “articles” in the coming days.

“stole” is not really the right word. One outlet reports on something, like something that was said during GDC. Other outlets then “remix” (/reorder) the content of said article to create their own article from that. Most of the times they attribute it correctly, but some less-than-savory outlets don’t even credit the original source. But I digress.

The problem with this remixing of content is that it keeps losing accuracy / value each time it’s reworked by a different outlet. They change the headline, change the order of paragraphs or sentences, omit certain bits, add something else; eventually this means that the clickbaity versions get more traction that the original article while also being less accurate at the same time. This irks me greatly, hence my initial comment.

You’re not wrong about drip-feeding content though. They will milk every single quote in an interview and create a whole new article for each thing that was said, even if these quotes were said in the span of two minutes.

Yes, it’s essentially this except with games, and PC Gamer is still kind of in the middle of the chain here.

I wish they would link to the original GDC talk, at least. Instead, all of their “sources” are their own articles.
