Keep in mind that this is a Bethesda game, so there is a huge risk that the game will be completely broken.
Otherwise I recommend Elite dangerous for just exploring shit.
The amount of planets is insane and not even close too every planet or even solar system will ever be visited

Elite: Dangerous is a pretty dang good spaceship flight simulator, and it’s an incredible experience even just for the exploration and sound design, but I do want to gently warn you that most of the meat and bones of the combat and engineering isn’t well-balanced or is grindy.
that said some of the most serene and otherworldly experiences of my life were when I stayed up late, space mining or sightseeing in VR and with a HOTAS. And there is a racing community of people who gear out really fast and nimble ships and do canyon runs and stunt flights. But again, pretty high barrier of entry to doing that cool stuff, because you have to progress engineering which is grindy, and that’s on top of the game’s controls being detailed enough that it might take you a week to get your space legs.
Sorry to say this, but CP2077 was raked because it was Bethesda-levels of broken. What was oustandard for that game is entirely the norm for a whole company. It’s all relative, and for Bethesda, “entirely unplayable and broken on all levels of game” is the normal.
I can’t remember Skyrim or Fallout 4 releasing in that bad of a state and I’ve owned those games since release. Fallout 76 on the other hand… Yikes. I might also be completely wrong as years of playing with unofficial community patches may have clouded my memories. CP2077 had way more issues than just bugs at launch. Witcher 3 was buggy as well, but at least somewhat feature complete. I can kinda forgive jank in games if the product itself is compelling to me and I’m just a sucker for Bethesda-style RPGs. Will still be waiting for Starfield’s launch on GamePass before I buy it, Fallout 4 and Fallout 76 had awful writing and that’s nothing that a patch can fix.

idk if you’ve played No Man Sky, it’s still going strong. It just released another massive update and has been releasing huge updates for 7 years now. It is a much closer fit for the exact fantasy you’re describing. Thing is, once you realize proc gen is most of the content for planets, it means you’ve basically seen it all. I don’t have any hype for the game, but NMS gave me hundred of hours, and judging by you implying the game is somehow negative, you probably still have the opinion from it’s initial launch. The game is really, really good now.

Yeah I definitely know what you mean though, but I think that’s a problem with really large scoped games that rely on proc gen. Obviously star field isn’t out yet, but I wonder how they’ll break it. I imagine they’ll have some sort of landmark on each planet where they’d want to draw you to. Then that’s where all the handmade stuff is. The rest of the planet will probably be boring proc gen stuff and there’s only so much you can do to make that interesting. NMS at least fleshed out their systems more with time, so I don’t know if Starfield will have that as well, or if majority of it is going to be just story and exploration like traditional Bethesda games. It probably will.
Everything that size has heavy elements of procedural generation now, but no man’s sky’s is pretty bad, then untouched by anyone. A little hand tuning goes a long way.
No Man’s Sky more or less just made an algorithm, then that’s your world. I’m guessing Bethesda’s process is more sketch out broad strokes, let the algorithm fill it in, make adjustments, then hand place some meaningful portion at the end. They’re using it an an intermediate step and not the whole process.

If you like Bethesda games for their worlds, it’s probably gonna be great. To me, the gameplay in their engine just feels really bad.
The movement, FOV, aiming, shooting, etc. just feels like they spent a few hours on it for an alpha for Morrowind and it hasn’t changed one bit since.
When you’re used to well made FPS engines, the gameplay of Skyrim and Fallout games just feels super bad, like tech demo-level bad.
I hope they finally made some changes, but they didn’t for Oblivion, Fallout 3, Fallout NV, or Fallout 4, so my hope is running out.
I found Fallout 4’s shooting night and day better than NV and 3’s. It’s a shame you didn’t feel that. It’s still definitely RPG shooter territory which is a lot harder to make feel satisfying than a conventional FPS, but the movement still didn’t feel very good, certainly.
Moment to moment feel is definitely a strong issue from previous Bethesda titles. I’m confident Starfield will feel better, but how much better is impossible to tell until we can get our hands on it or there can be some common discussion about it after release. The manicured, manufactured movements of pre release gameplay make it very hard to tell how that stuff has changed aside from their claims of redone animations systems.
You are right that Fallout 4 was better, but not by much imo. I just remember the huge disappointment I felt with Skyrim and the Fallout games, being a huge fan of Fallout 1/2, and shooters in general. Everything just felt slow and wonky.
It just never felt like a priority, which is totally fine and lots of people praise their products like they’re the pinnacle of video games, the engine just ruins it for me.
I’m actually surprised to not be downvoted to hell. If you air this opinion in front of casual gamers, like in /r/gaming, they go full Bethesda-fanboy-mode.
I think the effort towards changing that starting with Fallout 4 shows, it seems like it’s now a priority for them. Their engine has always been their greatest asset in terms of gameplay possibility, world object physics, immersion through radiant AI scheduling, an open and very moddable design, and it’s obvious specialization towards open world format (less of a big deal for an engine nowadays).
It’s also been one of their greatest weaknesses, with stiff and awkward animation and movement/combat on both NPCs and the player, the inability for crouching to allow you to pass under certain objects, poor pathfinding and scripting on NPCs in combat and for your followers who constantly get lost or hung up on geometry, the radiant AI which through complication of scripting can cause quest NPCs to be in the wrong locations or be missing the correct dialogue.
Ever since the creation engine rebrand I partially lamented that they didn’t scrap the engine, but over time I’ve come to accept that it’s not just Bethesda that makes Bethesda games, it’s the gamebryo engine. To remake an engine with their unique systems, mechanics, moddable format, and familiar console commands would be an enormous undertaking and I understand why theyve chosen to dig in and modify it further instead and their acceptance of those pros and cons.
I think any true lover of Bethesda games has to understand what they’re really good at, and what they’re really bad at, and you have to want them to get better, or else that’s not love at all.
I’m with you 1000% on this. I dream that one day we will have have a Renaissance of sorts for space exploration and finding a new home for us. Imagine waking up and excited to watch the news to see what magnificent discovery we found out there. What the pathfinders found. If there was contact with aliens. I would immediately want to be part of that journey no matter how small the contribution would be.
I’ve been looking to Starfield for that sense of wonder and excitement that I haven’t felt since playing Mass Effect: Andromeda. As much hate as that game got I loved the idea of being the first human on a planet and being the first human to make contact with an alien race. I hope Starfield fulfills that need once again.

star citizen doesn’t have anything so i would not count it. i love NMS but it is really shallow: not much differences in the biome, every planet is one of a few types etc. i did not play the latest expansion so i do not know what’s up with that. Elite Dangerous i bought and i played maybe 10 minutes? i could not find a comfortable keyboard combination, maybe i need to buy a controller for it…so i cannot say anything about it.
