I’d say the idea was that certain events have happened in history. Broad strokes are known. But you’re running the simulation to find out the details. And that’s where the game happens. Reach the objective, whatever way, or fail. Much like any other game.

That may be some way away from a sandbox game but it’s worlds away from watching a movie.

But on rails games like Drakes Whatever? I’d watch the movie if it wasn’t annoying and full of obnoxious characters and bad script.

Depends on how you constrain that idea. Open worlds were a very early idea, but old computers were somewhat capacity limited in how much content you could have.

Microsoft not being evil? Not going to happen. (Except for smokescreen purposes and amounts)

I’ve probably used a few for closer to a decade. Especially the three button ones in the 90’s (in Sgi granite) were nice.

Actually there’s an optical wheel mouse of some sort right here on my desk that I think I got used with a computer in maybe 2012. Model stickers have fallen off, the plastic is worn down and even the metal plate at the top looks as if it had been sanded down. It says Logitech, though.

But those naturally aren’t current models.

There are industrial switches that last practically forever. I’ve made some test robots for wearing out limit switches and the decent ones could be hammered constantly for days on end without a single miss.

Another component that doesn’t wear out is a photo gate. It doesn’t click or spring, though.

Actually just a decent keyboard switch would probably put up with a lot.

But it’s cheaper to go cheap and you get more repeat business.

I haven’t seen any flocking. And idiots certainly still have their regular brands.

It is tempting to assume that older gamers exclusively play low-fidelity games on their smartphones. This is simply untrue.

While mobile is certainly the biggest part of the games market in terms of revenues, 55+ gamers account for 23% of monthly PC gamers and 11% of monthly console gamers.

Oh, I forgot the slim existed. Interesting that someone took advantage of that.

PS2 didn’t have networking apart from the odd firewire port and a very expensive devkit.

I just got a second one because it was peanuts and came with two good controllers while mine are all kind of subtly broken.

I do actually have a PS4 with 5 controllers because once bit. I don’t know if I’ll find the time, but if I feel like playing something stuck on the three like infamous or demons souls, I can.

Maybe I’ll get the 5 one day. And maybe I’ll find that emulation can solve the old title problem.

Scummvm is much better than the old native interpreter. And the Amiga versions are obviously better than dos though any one should work.

Pretty sure spy cameras on wheels is just what the CCP wants, though.

Playstations that are old enough to become cheap to get but new enough that the local libraries still have a game collection.

Otherwise a Linux pc and gog, flea markets, local used sellers, or other sources.

You can generally avoid big updates simply by keeping the machine offline.

1300-2000 €. They wouldn’t be cheap if you cut off a digit from the price.

But you should know that if it’s a law or act with kids in the title, it will have absolutely nothing to do with kids in any way

This was my immediate thought as well. I’m not sure there’s any other game that measures up in the same way.

Poor bastards.

Well, I’d like try, too to see if there’s anything that isn’t online bs. Maybe some day. Meanwhile, I have a TTW run to get back to.

One day Ethernet will be replaced with a new technology. It will be called Ethernet.

Rainbow island and the New Zealand story used to be my favourites. But I hate platformers, so not sure how that goes. At least there’s some progression of difficulty in RI.

That went so well until your proposed alternative was Microsoft.

Are you serious?

I should continue my game at some point.

Fallouts. I knew they existed for, I don’t even know, decades? I finally got New Vegas some years back (and others later) and it really is the greatest game ever made. I don’t know why I waited.

That wouldn’t be evil. And they probably can’t just take over OSM or one would have already.
