Yesterday I played the demo of the new game Dispatch and it is all beautifully written, but at some point, while presenting the team in-game, there was a casual funny line, pronounced by a voice off-screen, so without graphical support and I just burst out laughing (I was alone at home, so not pressed by social influence of any kind).
When I stopped, I realized how uncommon this has become lately. As a kid, I found LucasArts games extremely funny and I laughed more than occasionally, but this aspect of video game entertainment has been dying out.
When was the last time you actually laughed out loud while playing a game for something that was actually designed as funny (no Fortnite or CoD shenanigans stories please)?

Rules:

While the lack of laughter can be from depression or stress (the podcasts I used to die laughing from only get an actual laugh out loud moment every once in a while now), I feel like most story-based video games that do humor try too hard nowadays and it doesn’t land (like outer worlds)
Most of my laughter in video games, personally has been from interacting with other people. Valheim, Helldivers 2, REPO, overcooked, stardew valley, etc…
Probably the last single player game I laughed with was A Hat in Time or something.
Goat Simulator 3 - absolutely ridiculously stupid funny.
Joy and Laughter are woke, so I stopped with them years ago. (/s on the “so”, literally just on that word)
I’ll second Dispatch. Enjoyed it more than I thought I would and legitimately looking forward to the next chapters.
I cackled playing Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth
…when some NPCs moonwalked in the background during some dialogue.
Before that, some parts Yakuza: Like A Dragon which I thought was a much funnier and better game
In Clair Obscur, convincing your fifth party member to join you had me actually cackling
Several times in Yakuza Kiwami, courtesy of Majima Everywhere system. Basically, you arrive in town completely weak and this dude who is also a yakuza, called Goro Majima, takes it upon himself to “train you up”. For the player this means having to fight him all the time. At first, it’s just meeting him on the street. Then, he starts making ambushes around corners. Then, he starts dressing up as a cop just so he can have an excuse to beat you up. THEN he starts muscling into fights he didn’t even start and it just gets more and more ridiculous from there. I found it super funny just how annoying they made him. In a good way, though!
Majima is great to watch steamers either adore or get increasingly exasperated by lmao.
Majima is the best.
I really miss playing as him with breaker style. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zYAGRUO1nwM
We laughed a lot while playing RV there yet. But by myself, probably Disco Elysium.
Last month I fell into Cyberpunk 2077. There is a lot of humor in that game, but I remember getting a call at 2 in the morning to pick up dick melting off guy and I nearly fell out of my chair laughing.
The Messenger was hilarious
Played yesterday with friends at NFS underground 1 it was quite fun
Not a funny line but I laughed out loud when selling items in Lethal Company for the first time. It’s an absurd game made with humor, and the multiplayer gameplay creates a lot of hilarious situations.
Sir Whoopass when the goblins are looking for a wifi connection.
