I want to get some recommendations on hardware (controllers) and games. Here’s my lunch time idea. Right now I got a high power 1080p projector that we watch movies on every night. Let’s say I got 8 players and a run of the mill computer. It does have a midrange nvidia card and AMD processor but let’s ignore that. What simple family games could we all play together on the same screen. For example sometimes we hookup the Nintendo (will never buy a thing from them due to being an asshole company now) and we play smash brothers or some of the various racing games. I would like to stay on Linux and see what options there are for a single screen multiplayer fun game, and what controllers from Amazon… Hopefully cheap…are available.

Help and suggestions
The jackbox games are always a good suggestion, your phone is your “controller”
Just dance it’s always funny
Seconding this. I got a used Wii and hacked it to play pirated games from an SD card, including Just Dance. Literally every commercially sold Wii can be hacked now, it’s super easy. No money given to Nintendo.
Also, the Just Dance modding scene is still pretty active and there are Wii ports for newer songs/games. But you can emulate stuff instead if you don’t have/want a Wii.

This controller looks real nice. $17 bucks! Yeah pretty good.
I can personally recommend Duck Game. It supports 8 player local play.
It’s a fighting game that plays on a single screen. Quite fast paced and not everyone’s kind of game but so far in my experience it’s been fun whenever guests come.
boomerang fu and gang beasts are great! Overcooked games are neat too 😊
For controllers, there was this new super cheap wired HE stick gamepad released not long ago, I’ll try find it.
E: here’s a post on the controller (GameSir Tegenaria Lite)

I can buy one to see if it works on fedora 42.
LOL. I love the boomerang one. Great suggestion! The kitchen cooking one looks interesting because of the collaboration needed.
My friends and I can play boomerang fu for hours. there’s a surprising level of depth to this deceptively cute looking game. Can get pretty competitive, but it’s always fun 😊
Very cool!
I have the controller on order so I’ll let you know.
Cool, let me know. How do those compare to PS2 controller fakes? I got some Bluetooth controllers like that. But I need to get new ones for sure.
I can’t say I’ve ever used a dualshock 2 clone, but I’ve used a sixaxis and ds3? Ergonomically they seem somewhat similar. In terms of quality, I can’t say. The controller I’ve linked is wired only, however. If that’s a dealbreaker, a company called 8bitdo make some fairly affordable wireless gamepads which are all Linux friendly (directly interpreted by steaminput)
Second 8bitdo, their stuff has been great for me
Thirded.
hey, it works flawlessly out of the box with Steam games on linux and feels really, surprisingly nice.
some resources here:
Very nice!
Maybe I’m wrong, but I don’t think Boomerang Fu or Overcooked support 8 players?
Overcooked I think tops out at four, boomerang fu goes up to 6 and gang beasts go up to 8
I think Neigsendoig (my producer) has an idea. You could play something like Super Tux Kart or another open-source game (mind you, that one I mentioned is FREE and Open-source) of the like.
I can’t think of a single game other than maybe Monopoly or Worms or something else where only 1 controller is used snd just passed around in a turn-based game that would even support more than 4 people playing at once with a single machine.
Most games only support up to 4 players in split screen, and most of those wre going to be older cuz modern games tend to not have splitscreen multiplayer at all.
8bitdo makes awesome controllers.
You’ll always return to playing heave ho.
So far as I know, there aren’t a lot of 8-player local multiplayer games. The only obvious answer is the Jackbox games, using your phones as controllers.
Beyond that, I did find this Steam curator, who seems to specialize in 8-player games. From thier list, I recognize Gang Beasts, and Pico Park: Classic Edition. Party Golf, Screen Cheat, and Cobalt also all looked interesting, but I’ve never seen anyone play them.
Gang beasts is hilarious. Takes some time to get into the weird controls but worth it.
Oh man those things move weird!
Little fighter 2 just got a “remaster” released on steam. It has always been a blast. But it might be up to 4 local coop only.
LOL that’s an interesting one!
8bitdo has a range of controllers that are great quality and cheaper than the console brands. I use ultimate wireless 2 which is on the pricier end but I use these over Xbox and dual shock 4.
For games, this is yet another 4ppl game that’s quite a gem:
No heroes here: You’re a bunch of princesses and princess who are defending a castle by platforming around to clean and load cannons, build cannonballs, haul gunpowder etc. Similar to overcooked but I think this is even more fun.
Gang Beasts is a fun one and supports up to 8 players. Don’t use the native Linux version though. It’s pretty buggy but the Windows version works well with Proton.
Nidhogg is another fun one. It’s only two players at a time but you can do a tournament and it’s almost as fun to watch as it is to play. The sequel is good but I prefer the original for it’s simplicity.
I’ll throw in a recommendation for PlateUp!
Great little coop game like overcooked but has you run the entire restaurant.
Base game supports 4 players but is easy to add mods to support more
