Hello fellow patient gamers!

Bit US centric, but I had the day off for memorial day. I was in the mood to catch up on my steam deck wear and tear with a good round of Civ5 BNW. I have had the long term goal of beating it on deity. Did not get there and the game might be lost due to runaway civ, but slim chance of turtleing down and going for a science victory.

Any games that you are still getting use out of while you wait for sales or for something new to drop?

I have installed a local World of Warcraft (WOTLK) server and me and my wife are teaching our 7y.o. to play in this safe environment.

i learned about crosscode recently, and i could tell from just a few gameplay snippets that it’s a game i’ll spend a lot of time with. at full price it was only $20, and i’m more than happy to support the devs.

their next game, alabaster dawn, looks really nice so far too.

The wife and I gave Elden Ring a try finally. Actually did not like it.

Decided to stop waiting for the summer sale and get into Ender Magnolia instead, since we loved the first one. I think we’re more a Metroidvania household than a Soulslike anyway.

Hollow Knight is one of the most enjoyable games I’ve ever played. Its vibe is immaculate and its mechanics are fine-tuned to perfection. It’s fair to credit that game as the thing that finally made my wife into an enthusiastic gamer.

Really been enjoying Fallout London. Incredible work for a group of modders. The occasional bug doesn’t bother me much. My only complaint is it’s sometimes very hard to get from point A to point B on the map, and no explanation is given for why.

Had a hell of a time getting this working I should try again

The Wonderful 101! Closing in on 100%. The better I get at the game, the more fun I have! Just like an action game should be!

Some Magic Arena and Descenders. The latter was surprisingly good.

I played some X-COM via OpenXcom. Having fun trying to keep from getting massacred assaulting an alien base!

How does the open version compare? Particularly in regard to completeness of features and AI behavior?

They do a lot of optimization for modern hardware like supporting wide screen resolutions. They fixed major show stopper bugs along with a ton of tiny fixes and added a lot of mod-like options in the settings.

For example it’s a turn based game so your guys do everything based on “time units”. In the base game it can be a big risk to peek around a corner, see an enemy and not have time to fire or even retreat back to safety. OpenXcom can show you how many time units you’ll have left and in colors if you have enough time to shoot when you get there. Cool stuff!

The AI seems pretty true to vanilla but they put in a rule that you have at least one turn to get out of your drop ship without being fragged or rocketed by aliens. There are third party mods that make the aliens work as a team to sneak up or flank you. Those scare me so I haven’t tried it yet lol

I’ve been wanting to checkout xcom for a while, so I might give the openversion a shot, thanks!

Played through all of Doom 1 (enhanced) for the first time last weekend on my Steam Deck OLED; it was a blast! Now going through Doom 2. I never got to play them as a kid (overbearing parents) and when I tried a few years ago the controls didn’t click. The enhanced version “fixed” that for me.
