Man Charged for Wiping Phone Before CBP Could Search It
cross-posted from: https://lemmy.world/post/40009551 > https://www.404media.co/man-charged-for-wiping-phone-before-cbp-could-search-it/ > > A man in Atlanta has been arrested and charged for allegedly deleting data from a Google Pixel phone before a member of a secretive Customs and Border Protection (CBP) unit was able to search it, according to court records and social media posts reviewed by 404 Media. The man, Samuel Tunick, is described as a local Atlanta activist in Instagram and other posts discussing the case. > The exact circumstances around the search—such as why CBP wanted to search the phone in the first place—are not known. But it is uncommon to see someone charged specifically for wiping a phone, a feature that is easily accessible in some privacy and security-focused devices. > 💡 > Do you know anything else about this case? I would love to hear from you. Using a non-work device, you can message me securely on Signal at joseph.404 or send me an email at [email protected]. > The indictment says on January 24, Tunick “did knowingly destroy, damage, waste, dispose of, and otherwise take any action to delete the digital contents of a Google Pixel cellular phone, for the purpose of preventing and impairing the Government’s lawful authority to take said property into its custody and control.” The indictment itself was filed in mid-November. > Tunick was arrested earlier this month, according to a post on a crowd-funding site and court records. “Samuel Tunick, an Atlanta-based activist, Oberlin graduate, and beloved musician, was arrested by the DHS and FBI yesterday around 6pm EST. Tunick's friends describe him as an approachable, empathetic person who is always finding ways to improve the lives of the people around him,” the site says. Various activists have since shared news of Tunick’s arrest on social media. > > The indictment says the phone search was supposed to be performed by a supervisory officer from a CBP Tactical Terrorism Response Team. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) wrote in 2023 these are “highly secretive units deployed at U.S. ports of entry, which target, detain, search, and interrogate innocent travelers.” > “These units, which may target travelers on the basis of officer ‘instincts.’ raise the risk that CBP is engaging in unlawful profiling or interfering with the First Amendment-protected activity of travelers,” the ACLU added. The Intercept previously covered the case of a sculptor and installation artist who was detained at San Francisco International Airport and had his phone searched. The report said Gach did not know why, even years later. > Court records show authorities have since released Tunick, and that he is restricted from leaving the Northern District of Georgia as the case continues. > The prosecutor listed on the docket did not respond to a request for comment. The docket did not list a lawyer representing Tunick.

People should stop playing any game that has such anticheat.

Another reminder that markets don’t self regulate.

That is definitely a good point about games making the military look good. At one point the US Army had its own game called America’s Army too.

I don’t think Satya Nadal is going out in public like regular people,

He may have security… Like one might expect a high level antifa cartel member would /s

Possibility. Halo is a huge title and they trashed it. They should have finished out halo wars and odst trilogy and start one for the arbiter.

Recently finished Hobo: Tough Life. It was a fun play though

Halo 3 was the perfect ending to the trilogy. Spartans don’t die; they just go missing in action.

What’s the appeal of a porn game over just watching a video? Seems like the interaction is a hassle

Some what of a tangent on Christmas is that there is the “War on Christmas” narrative. I am always curious about what it is supposed to mean. The Christians that are into it often take capitalism to be good as an axiom the way they do their own faith. Which is at odds with their culture war as capitalist firms are what drive the secularization of Christmas. Would a commercial with Jesus on the cross saying he is thirsty and having a Roman Soldier pass him an ice cold Coca Cola be better?

I find the pod optimization to be a bit more so so now a days. It saves from calling a resupply at the start, but many of the new maps are urban and have more goodies lying around.

still very solid tho

There is also a Thunderbird app now. I think they are doing the maintenance for k9 as well.

I’ve been wanting to checkout xcom for a while, so I might give the openversion a shot, thanks!

Have y’all tried Hollow Knight? It is pure art.

How does the open version compare? Particularly in regard to completeness of features and AI behavior?

What games did you get down with over the holiday weekend?
Hello fellow patient gamers! Bit US centric, but I had the day off for memorial day. I was in the mood to catch up on my steam deck wear and tear with a good round of Civ5 BNW. I have had the long term goal of beating it on deity. Did not get there and the game might be lost due to runaway civ, but slim chance of turtleing down and going for a science victory. Any games that you are still getting use out of while you wait for sales or for something new to drop?

I’ve not joined their discord or other. Thanks for the heads up.

Helldivers 2 is pretty good. Surprisingly not toxic/salty for how big it is.

I guess these dudes want to live a power fantasy through Geralt instead of accepting the natural next step;

I thought this was going to say something about looking inward or something. Like being inspired to be the best self you can.

That’s on me.

Freeciv is basing it gameplay on older game of civilization series like civilization II and Unciv on the newer games like civilization VI.

Any fellow steam deckers playing Halo Wars or MCC?

Not to worry anyone. I am sure the free market will do much better soon. Investors love to put money in risky projects and not wait for the government to tell them what to do after all /s

Hollow Knight has not been mentioned

Anything tempting you?
Hearing that Civ 7 is going to have Steam Deck support is tempting me.

Getting into Civ 6
I got into Civilization rather late with their fifth entry. I was hesitant because as I get older I need more time to game than I do new titles. Still I picked up six with all DLC during the last sale. I have to say I am liking the changes. It was good to wait because Civ does need its DLCs to feel complete. On a side note, it runs quite nice on the Steam Deck (In desktop mode docked)

Simple Mobile alts?
Just wondering what anyone might be moving to after the news broke?
