Good news for players on Steam Deck and SteamOS, as the Steam Deck Verified system just hit 19,000 games that are rated either Verified or Playable.

I honestly think Proton is one of the most impressive pieces of software of the last decade

A lot of very talented people have donated decades of work in order to get us to this point. It’s nice to see it come together.

A quick search says there are 55,000 games on Steam. 19,000 is just over a third of all Steam games guaranteed to work on Linux with no issues.

Neither “Playable” nor “Verified” status means no issues, unfortunately. It’s still good, but IMO the current rating system leaves a lot to be desired.

It will be a magical day when it hits 51% of all games!

Keep in mind this includes games like the oblivion remastered, which is certainly launchable, but I wouldn’t call 10-20 fps playable.

Because the verification system doesn’t take performance into consideration at all. It’s more of a “how much effort does it take to get the game running” indicator.

It also does not include countless games that Steam has rated as “unsupported” or “not playable” despite them working just fine.

Agreed. Also, there’s a lot of smaller 3D games that run at 30+, but end up being a bit choppy and tanks the battery life. Nowadays I just play 2D games on my Deck, then I get 3hr of battery life

What does ‘playable’ mean? Because on ProtonDB a lot of games will gave a gold/platinum rating, but don’t work properly and have bugs or performance issues.

I think Playable has a bit of a wider range. Verified means it can play optimally out of the box.

Playable means that there may need to be some tweaking. Maybe performance issues, maybe text too small to read on the screen, maybe input issues that require a keyboard/mouse. It varies from game-to-game.

I’ve played quite a few games that were “Playable” that I’ve had no issues with, personally. Others which I just couldn’t be bothered to get working correctly :P Most of the time there’s more information on each game and what these issues are.

I wish they would change the wording on it, to me playable means I click the button and it works, if it needs tweaks and stuff it’s not playable.

I wanna use my PC not spend time tweaking things and fixing problems lol

Where are they getting the numbers from? I’m not doubting the article but protondb only reports that only 3225 games are rated verified and playable.

The numbers seem to come from SteamDB’s instant search.

There’s about a thousand more Verified and Playable games than two months ago.

That is insane. I mean, I know a lot of it is publishers pushing to get them verified, but still. 1000 games in 2 months. Wow.

I only really check multiplayer games/live service. Single player games even when it says not verified, I’ve never had a problem. Probably no official check yet. I also play desktop Linux so poor Deck performance leading to a worse rating is mostly irrelevant to me
