Alternatively, share your favorite mods for CK2, preferably ones that don’t rely on DLCs since I have only been playing for a few months and haven’t bought any

In case of mods, full overhaul would be ideal, but that’s a lot of work, so here’s my order of importance:

  1. map
  2. races
  3. religion
  4. cultures

I also have vanilla Europa Universalis IV, but I haven’t tried it out yet

Another thing worth pointing out: I’m NOT looking for a 4X, I don’t like the military / conquer focus of the genre

What I like in CK2:

  • micromanaging marriages to (hopefully) get good stats and claims or land
  • I can lose a lot without a game over
  • personal feel of playing a dynasty instead of a country (but that’s okay, too)
  • keeping a realm stable and vassals loyal
  • “how have I become the king of X?”, sometimes caused by forgetting my own plans
  • “England, it’s the 11th century, you shouldn’t be creating a colonial empire yet!” - probably won’t apply to a fantasy world, but I think it’s still worth mentioning
  • staying alive is simple enough to try funny plans, like turning Byzantine Empire heretic
  • interesting achievements
  • working native Linux version
  • overall interpersonal relationship management

After seeing my friend play Victoria III and Europa Universalis V, I think I’d enjoy a game with a more economic focus. I’ll probably buy EU5 if it gets a fantasy mod with world generator, but that’s probably gonna take a looong while.

Ck2 has an overhaul mod for vampire the masquerade called prince of darkness. It’s pretty cool having your characters live hundreds of years learning new skills/spells and diablorizing to get closer to a 1st generation vampire. Having your personal herd to feed off of and turning loyal members into full fledged vampires. Theres a new masquerade meter that fills if you flaunt your vampire tendencies too much and can lead to some nasty events (crusade against your kingdom, riots etc)

It takes a little getting used to but is super fun

Edit: heres the workshop link if you’re lazy

Commenting here because my app doesn’t know how to bookmark comments. Thank you!!

Just to add there’s also the CK2 Warhammer mod which while intensive on the computer is quite good.

I’m guessing you want fantasy/history, but since you didn’t specify it, if cyberpunk is something ypu’re interrested in, I highly recommend https://store.steampowered.com/app/2001070/Heart_of_the_Machine/.

It’s a unique game. Not exactly 4x, but kind of choose your own adventure / rpg / 4x game, where you play a newly awekened sentient android/AI in a dystopic city, that is left alone by corporation because they want to see what you do.

There’s extremely branching story that works across timelines/playthrough, you have a lot of options from “fuck humans uplift animals” through “i’m your god”, " I house the homeles", to “this is my city now” or “VR torment nexus”, with numerous civilization destrpying dooms you’re trying to solve along the way.

It’s pretty cool, and I don’t think I’ve seen anything like it.

While it doesn’t have dynasties or span ages, it does work with time travel where you affect your new/other timelines, which are new playthroughs.

So, it’s probably not the fantasy kingdom management sim you’re looking for, but just in case you don’t mind cyberpunk and a smaller scale, I highly recommend this. It’s my top 4x hybrid I’ve played so far.

Other than cks mods

Age of wonders 4

Warhammer total war.

Wildermyth has the legacy side of things though smaller scope

On that note the mount and blade games with mods to charge the setting are more of an action direction.

I’ve played AoW 3 for about 8 hours and it looks like every other 4X to me, how different is AoW 4?

As for Warhammer Total War - I’m still not over losing in a tutorial in TW: Shogun, but I’m pretty sure I have 1 and 3 on Epic Games. From what I’ve seen it’s pretty much all about attacking nearby territory. My friend that was streaming it mostly played as Chaos and Skavens, so feel free to expand my view on the series.

I’ve heard about Wildermyth, it’s on my wishlist, but thanks for bringing it up.

I’ve tried M&B for a few hours and I got bored very quickly.

No high fantasy stuff comes to mind.
But CK2 has some overhauls, like game of thrones and possibly LOTR.

Stellaris might also have something, but I don’t know because paradox’s penchant for dozens of dlcs had me run away from it some years back.

Mount and Blade series have many overhauls and offshoots which focus on economy and warfare, but I don’t know any to develop the marriage and vassal systems.

A bit shallow and disappointing would be Old World and Great Houses of Calradia. The former has a CK2 style of lineage system with marriages, raising children and taking up court positions, but it’ll feel lacking for some unknown reason once you go in deep. The latter focuses a lot on diplomacy through marriage, but the company is gone and the game is incomplete, leaving it unpopular for modding options.

Alliance of the Sacred Suns is a game i thought had already arrived. It was touted at one point as CK in space, but who knows. It can still be a total disappointment.

There may be many others, like Total War types, but I am unaware of them right now.

I’ve played Total War: Shogun after a giveaway, lost in a tutorial, got so tilted I’ll probably never play any Total War for years to come

I’ll definitely look into Alliance of the Sacred Suns, thanks

paradox’s penchant for dozens of dlcs had me run away from it some years back

That’s why I’m trying to avoid just getting some for CK2, like c’mon, generating a random world and transferring saves to EU4 shouldn’t be locked away

I cant’t remember the name and I’ve tried googling, but there was a game that looked and played exactly like Rimworld, but in medoeval setting. It might be what you are looking for, of someone else can find it :D

Norland is rimworld but you only control the leaders of your camp and they have kids and die like CK.

Early access, so not very patient of gaming lol

From what I see it’s been in EA for over a year, so it could be argued it may be patient gaming

Do I care? Not really.

Anyway, thanks for providing the name. I’ve checked it on Steam and I’d rather stick to CK2 for now.

This convo reminded me of Lords and Villeins. https://store.steampowered.com/app/1287530/Lords_and_Villeins/

I’ve only seen, not played it, so I can’t say what’s it’s actually like. But the description talks about managing families, so it may be worth checking out. However, you should check the reviews, just in case it fails to deliver.

Looks more like Prison Architect than a grand strategy, but thanks for the suggestion nonetheless
