I took his criticisms of the combat as basically saying “this system is not interesting enough to form a satisfying gameplay loop”. That’s a critical statement which I actually agree with, though from my perspective that’s a key part of Persona’s core design: neither the combat system nor the social link system are endlessly enjoyable, so the player is intrinsically motivated to avoid lingering for too long and properly close the core gameplay loop by advancing the calendar. It’s that sort of pendulum-like cadence which gives the series its unique sense of momentum.

I do think that it’s a shame RPS’s Matt was unable to find joy in P3R’s gameplay loop due to disliking the social-link system… but I also see it as an opportunity to better understand the game as a holistic package in a way that can’t be achieved through a more carefully measured, quantitative analysis. The way I see things, the game is the game – I’m much more interested in understanding what’s in the game rather than what’s not, if that makes any sense.

I tend to prefer clicking through the unscored reviews first since I find that it’s generally a mark of a quality outlet. Rock Paper Shotgun in particular is an old favorite of mine, so their’s is the first review that I clicked on and let me tell you guys: it’s a real firecracker!

Matt clearly didn’t have a good time and I had to respectfully disagree with a lot of the points he’s made, but even so… his points are well-articulated and sensible. I’m rather glad for his uncommon perspective on the topic and I do think that RPS ultimately picked the right writer for the job. He hasn’t particularly changed my mind about a day-one purchase, of course – the main difference is now I’ll have a more nuanced and realistic expectation for what’s inside.

It’s a pretty different situation under closer examination. The DnD developers are ex-Nexon employees and they (allegedly) pitched the idea internally before deciding to leave and take the idea with them.

Nexon thought that they had a legal leg to stand on because of how IP laws work (i.e.: employee ideas on company time are company IP). Perhaps more importantly; they probably felt a need to retaliate in order to send a message to other employees who might want to try something similar.

Palworld, on the other hand, is made by a team with no ties whatsoever to GameFreak. If Pokemon were a younger franchise they might possibly have a patent case of some kind, but even the 3D games go back almost 24 years now.

I’ve been collecting these, super hyped for February 🗣️🗣️🗣️💨💨💨🔥🔥🔥

Male A to Male C is abolutely possible. It’s the Male A to Female C adapters which are evil. There is no pinout mapping that will turn an A host into a “real” C host and that’s exactly what a Male A to Female C adapter purports to do.

In any case, if you know what you’re doing then all bets are off the table. Hack away freely because at the end of the day it’s all just copper and bits anyway. With that being said, anyone who knows what they’re doing does not require my permission to… vague gesture know what they’re doing.

No, it’s because I read an expert opinion on the subject: https://old.reddit.com/r/UsbCHardware/comments/m7rcu5/any_reliable_usbc_female_to_usba_male_adapters_yet/grducjr/

If you hate Amazon you can buy it on the CableCreation website instead.

EDIT: that monoprice adapter isn’t even active lol!

A screenshot of a Q&A thread from the aforementioned monoprice product page. Paul G. asks: "Is this a passive device? I.e. no electronics,; only wires between the connectors.". Michelle K responds: "Correct, this is an un-powered, passive USB adapter. Although I have not measured the throughput, it works as advertised."

First thing’s first: all such adapters should be considered evil by default. The only way to make a compliant adapter is with active circuitry in the adapter essentially providing an entirely standalone USB controller interface.

With that being said, here’s an adapter which does exactly that. Back when I researched this topic in October I found that the linked adapter is essentially the only one of its kind on the market right now.

Good for them. No cyclical mass layoffs and any paycuts always happened in the c-suite first. The U.S. game industry could stand to learn a thing or two from their Japanese predecessors, I think it’s safe to say.

Alright, enough cheerleading for a faceless multinational megacorp… I just had to give credit where it was due so that I can still take myself seriously the next time I criticize the games industry for inevitably shitting its pants again.

Excellent. More fuel for the Youtube lore video essay mines!

If it’s not fun, why bother?

I’m never going to give Epic a single red cent. Their stewardship of Rocket League has been a nonstop parade of fuck-yous:

  • Pulled the game from Steam
  • Forced pre-existing Steam users to make Epic accounts
  • Killed Linux support
  • Laid off a large number of key studio members
  • Inserted season passes into a (previously) paid game

Too much take take take. I know this level of publisher meddling isn’t uncommon, but it’s rarely so obvious. We can see exactly what the game looked like before/after and I’m struggling to think of even a single positive change.

Oh, in that case it’s not horrifying at all. Who doesn’t keep 3 years of past salary in their checking account for the occasional rainy day?

Terrorists Win (the drip competition)

A screenshot from the Counter-Strike 2 trailer depicting a hero shot of a 5-man terrorist team. From left to right: a man who looks like Rambo, a European gentleman in a combat vest wearing a stocking over his head and smoking a cigarette, a classic masked Counter-Strike terrorist, a middle-eastern gentleman wearing a breezy leather jacket and his hair done up in a manbun, an African gentleman wearing aviator sunglasses, a dark-red t-shirt, and a bright-orange bandanna masking his lower face

Oh boy, can’t wait for Youtube Mail and Youtube Maps next

For everyday writing I like to use MessagEase. It’s highly ergonomic thanks to the 3x3 grid and deeply customizable. I’ve been happily using it for over a decade now (it continues to receive updates) and for the past 8 years I’ve been able to touch-type on it without looking at my fingers

The documentation is all in-app, so I’ve taken the liberty of screenshotting the relevant pages for illustrative purposes:

An unexpectedly candid response as far as these things go… though I guess that’s just how Phil Spencer usually is. I appreciate the deliberate choice to avoid double-speak even though he’s basically blanket declining to discuss the topic.

A stand-up move from Re-Logic. You love to see it when the people at the helm of a lucrative publisher are industry stakeholders rather than the all-too-common quarterly cash extractor types[1].

  1. Yes, I am all too aware that such seemingly altruistic gestures can be calculated PR moves in disguise. I certainly understand that this move will earn them (as a publisher) brownie points with various indie studios who may just so happen to be seeking publisher funding in the wake of an expensive mid-project engine switch. Such is the way of the world; sometimes a move can be simultaneously altruistic and good business. ↩︎

Heys guys, look! We’ve finally found him. The world’s most well-informed gamer!

O’ great Gamer, hallowed be thy name… please bless us peasants with yet another nugget of your immaculate gaming wisdom!

A list of horrible, no-good things which video games definitely cause:

  • Near-sightedness
  • Satanism
  • Obesity
  • Communism
  • Tardiness
  • The gays
  • Gun violence
  • Hand/eye coordination
  • And now… drumroll Rioting!

If the people in power say it is so, then it must be true.

I find it interesting how common it is to blame executive greed/stupidity, as if we all merely got super unlucky when companies were picking their CEOs. Every CEO is different, yet the outcome is almost universally the same: when company longevity and quarterly profits come into conflict, profits win.

The CEO of the modern public corporation embodies that conflict of interest, which is perhaps why they are so hateable – the job is inherently two-faced – but at the end of the day they’re just a face, a name, and a bundle of core competencies. No matter how many CEOs we go through, there will never be one who could satisfy the unending hunger of the public stock market. You will never find one who is not ultimately enthralled. The fundamental concept of know-nothings owning everything is just outright broken.

I don’t know if I think we should burn it all down, but one thing I’m sure of is that the problems won’t stop until we bring the people with investment money into close alignment with the long-term interests of the corporations they own (and/or oust/eat them)

You’re of course within your rights to remain unconvinced, but I fail to understand the mindset that would lead a reasonable bystander to look at what Ms. Reeves has said thus far and think “there’s a significant chance that this is untrue”. Why? For what purpose? She stands to gain nothing by lying unless you start imagining that a much broader conspiracy is somehow at play.

If you’re willing to entertain the idea of a hitherto unsubstantiated conspiracy from one side, then why not also suspect that LMG will conspire to hire a crooked auditor or otherwise hide unflattering findings? Why take anyone’s word for anything?

The fact she is a woman is different than the majority, however there are other women at LMG

I don’t know how to respond to this without speaking condescendingly. I’m sorry, but you’ll just have to trust me when I say that women can still be subjected to workplace harassment in situations where they aren’t literally the only girl in the building. I’ll leave it at that unless an actual woman wants to step in and expand on this subject further.

not all the men at LMG are sexist so most likely at least one person from one of those camps would object/want to do/say something

That’s just how power works. If you’re in the minority, your needs and concerns get less attention. If you’re in a very small minority, they become practically invisible. Organizations aren’t immune to this. Sexist outcomes can and will readily emerge from systems where none of the individuals directly intend to do a sexism.

As evidence, I’ll point to the statistic itself. A gender gap as steep as this one doesn’t happen by random chance. The only way you get this far skewed is with a feedback loop.

My question is if she had such a bad experience, why hasn’t anyone else said anything, or at least put an anonymous negative review on Glassdoor or something? […] (and the turnover is pretty low for LMG if I’m not mistaken, so that also doesn’t make sense)

Indeed, why is that? Why would she have such an abnormaly bad experience at this particular company? I can’t seem to think of any particular traits that she might have which would have caused her to be treated differently. If sexist comments and sexual harassment are such a problem, then why do people like Gary, James, Ed, Nick, Colton, or Luke apparently seem blind to it? I have no idea what disparity in the distribution of power could possibly account for this phenomenon!

I’m disappointed. Jesus of all people should know how dangerous it is to ride without proper gear. Where’s the helmet? Where’s the armor? And, Christ… are those Sandals?? ATGATT!

Here’s the app I use FWIW: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ivianuu.pie

I went through a lot of different apps before settling on this one. It’s a perfect recreation (+ way more customization) and works flawlessly. The app is 100% worth the pricetag if you want Pie controls on stock.

I started using Pie controls with Paranoid Android back in 2015 and never gave them up. It’s great for muscle memory

Sakurai’s independent. Nintendo always goes to him first when it’s time to make a new entry, but Sakurai’s under no obligation to accept. Nevertheless, he keeps coming back to the table, so it’s probably fair to assume that he enjoys directing this series.

pl_venice is a community map, so the balance changes are coming from a volunteer map creator, not a Valve employee. They’re still technically vetting the changes, but only in the sense that they’re verifying that the map compiles and loads properly. It’s still cool that they’re keeping the lights on, though!

Reasonable people will disagree… but no, probably not. This is a feature which websites can choose to use in the same way that websites can choose to use notifications. Even if you dislike the fact that web browsers provide the option, it’s the website itself that’s actively choosing to impose on you.

Now, the counterpoint to this argument is that the feature in question will most likely further strengthen Google’s position as the market leader and lock out new independent browsers. This is certainly true and similar logic has indeed been employed in cases like the Microsoft antitrust case. With that being said, Google still has that extra layer of abstraction sitting between it and the actual mechanism of action (i.e.: independent website owners who want DRM). Think of it like the Uber of anti-trust law.

Within my own personal circle, I’m pretty sure it’s because Overwatch imploded. Most of us saw it as the spiritual successor to TF2 and got really invested because it was pushing the genre forward. As OW2 slowly shat itself, everyone kind of just split off and fell into mourning. Now that it’s been around a decade I think we’ve collectively begun feeling that nostalgic itch and are steadily coalescing back around TF2.

I love squad-based tactics games & Persona, so this seems right up my alley. That “triple threat” action seems particularly interesting. It’s like a higher risk version of a flanking attack where you have to put more units in danger but get to target an entire AoE instead of just one unit.

Weird Opinion: Half-Life 1 is actually way better than Half-Life 2
First, some background: I first became aware of PC gaming in 2012 (15yrs after HL1, 7yrs after HL2). I played both games back-to-back and then later replayed both separately. There's so much to be said about these two games, but I'll sum up my feelings in a few bullet points: * HL1 is more thematically unified. It plays true to its Sci-Fi & *Die Hard* roots up to the point of campiness, but that fits rather well for a game whose protagonist is effectively a nerdy Doom Marine -- more a force-of-nature embodiment of survival than traditional hero. * HL2, on the other hand, feels weighed-down by this legacy. It *wants* to tell a serious story about a charismatic freedom-fighter. That's an aesthetic which clashes terribly with HL1's mute, stoic survivalist. * HL1 has a better core gameplay loop. It plays to its strengths: gunplay & level exploration. Exposition & puzzling are almost always delivered through these mediums wherever possible. Those few chapters which depart from this philosophy (*On a Rail*, *Xen*) are the weakest in the whole game as a result. * HL2, by contrast, seems almost insecure. It only trusts the player to stick with the core gameplay-loop for a few chapters *at most* before pivoting into yet another gimmick -- almost all of which (*barring the gravity gun sequence*) feel painfully drawn out: * **Water Hazard**: Boating * **Highway 17**: Driving * **Sandtraps**: Physics "Puzzling" + "Platforming" * **Nova Prospekt**: Wave-Based Point Defense --- What do you guys think? There's a lot worth unpacking here which I couldn't *quite* articulate. What are your takeaways?
