The North Sentinel Island Sentinelese are not cannibals. They just want nothing to do with anyone not born on the island.

Which is a good policy to have, seeing as how the British genocided the rest of the Andaman Islands. They even landed on North Sentinel, kidnapped a few old people and children, and then sent the survivors back as plague bearers. (this was in 1880)

They aren’t on the same level of fraudulent bullshit, but they’re close.

Fingerprint matching is done “by eye” and often involves an “expert” saying that one smudge is a 100% match for another smudge.

DNA matching is the only forensic science that’s worth a damn, and only if it’s done correctly.

I just played through it.

It’s about 5 hours of content. The puzzles are interesting and mostly new.

If you own Portal 2, the mod is free to play.

The one thing he was at the company to do, was make good games that make good money.

Covering for rapists and threatening to kill employees is bad enough, but I can see a world where that sort of shit is, not forgiven, but swept under the rug.

That world is one where the money flows. It’s not a good world, but it’s one that’s understandable.

But fucking with the games and making shit worse? In a sane world, the Board would take a look at the company and say, no. this guy has to go for all of the above reasons.

That sane world is one where mergers and acquisitions are heavily scrutinized, and Blizzard was not allowed to merge with Activision.

Actual competition in the space means that the CEO has to actually be halfway good at the job, and maybe not a complete psycho. We don’t live in a sane world.

It should be fun a challenge, but maybe not as fun as my naked golden dragonborn monk.

At some point in the run, I just stopped and said, “fuck, I need to play this guy in tabletop game”

He has the shiniest golden scales beneath rippling muscle. He sees the physical form as perfection itself, perfection that is too godly for such window dressing as clothing. But for modesty’s sake, he might be convinced to wear a schlong thong. If you ask nicely.

To download the game in the first place, I had to leave my laptop running overnight. Twice.

It was rough.

As to my paladin… I’m torn. I hard saved as soon as I figured out that I had broken my oath, but I have a soft save just before it happened.

I might just press on.

I’m also playing this run as a “no illithiad powers” run. No mind control, no eating tadpoles. I’ll see how long that lasts.

I’m on an Arch based distro called Garuda.

This is where I found the fix.

https://www.protondb.com/app/1086940/

Got to love that site. Always good to know that I’m not alone in my random errors.

It does.

Granted, the fix for the last patch was pretty simple. Just delete a single file and it works.

Steam might redownload that file, but who knows…

The joy of trying to run a windows only game on linux.

I played a bit this morning. Accidentally broke my paladin’s oath while trying to get more info from a bad guy I was planning to kill.

Killed them instantly after the conversation, but that conversation broke the oath. Shouldn’t have bothered either. Didn’t get anything new.

And now I won’t be able to savescum/press on until tomorrow at the earliest due to download speeds. I’m also on linux, so I might have to wait even longer if this patch breaks things again.

And I had a few mods…

So maybe this time next week?

I have almost 2500 hours in the game. There are mods that change the nature of the game to the point where it seems like a completely different game.

There are also modders in the community who have worked on parts of the official DLC.

Speaking of, the DLC massively expanded the game.

But even just the base game is an addictive colony builder where everything is likely to end in flames. Or not. Because there difficulty settings are fairly robust. You can make it a chill little farm sim if you want.

The game is pure freedom.

Just because everything is on fire, my cook has food poisoning, my researcher is punching the boomalope, and my hunter is running from the fire, doesn’t mean I’ve lost control.

No everything is probably okay as long as there’s no raid or mech cluster.

Plus, I’ve learned by now to not have wooden bases, and to keep the flammables and boomalopes on opposite sides of the base. Chemfuel goes over in that little building over there, with a thin roof. Still need to remember that firefoam poppers are a thing.

So it’s not a total loss. And that was the highlights of yesterday’s play session.

Not willing to wait 10 minutes to play a game? You Sir, or Madam, have never played modded Rimworld.

Now imagine loading a game, realizing your mods aren’t quite right, and having to exit out and reload.

As to 10 minutes to something like Warzone… no. Just no. An online battle royal type game needs to be fast. It can’t be all laid back and calming like Rimworld, the colony/warcrimes simulator.

I had forgotten about this game… I put it on a wishlist ages ago waiting for a sale…

And it turns out, that sale happened a while back when my old computer was dead. I’ve had my new computer for months now and this game in my library and not remembered that I had it.

Cheaper, or banned entirely by the Egyptian government. Valve is sort of in a tough spot here. The EU will fine them, but so will every authoritarian regime that bans anyone in the country from downloading banned items.

2; Some buzzwords that you don’t seem to understand the meaning of, with some conspiracy theory nonsense thrown in.

3; yup. US history is full of horrible shit, but we’re trying to be better. Well most of us. China is not trying to be better.

The US once engaged in genocide, and China is using that past to justify several ongoing genocides.

The US has often failed to fully live up to its ideals of freedom and equality, and China uses that to justify not having any freedom or equality.

The US holds freedom of speech as sacrosanct, often to the point where harmful ideologies are given platforms, China uses secret trials to jail people for the study of their own heritage.

The point being, China fucking sucks for anyone who isn’t a rich, ethnic Han, flawlessly loyal to the CCP.

Harvesting prisoner organs to give to the wealthy/party members.

Executing people for things they’ve said.

Quartering party loyalists in Uyghur homes, particularly the forced co-habitation of Uyghur women with male party loyalists.

The list goes on because China is a totalitarian dictatorship, and the US, for all its many, many, faults, is not.

The main difference is that the US is mostly trying to be better, and China is actively embracing the crimes against humanity.

Generally, dictatorships are called regimes. Thus, China certainly qualifies as a regime.

Hell, the actual dictionary definition is as follows;

Regime, noun;

A government, especially an oppressive or undemocratic one.

You mean how some of the rightwing literally believe that they are somehow part of a war with Satan?

That’s why this is a gray area.

He’s not bought any stock this year. He’s just been selling off his compensation stock.

He might just be an idiot who thought no one would complain or jump ship from using Unity.

It was a pre-scheduled sale.

They’re announced months in advance and can either trigger on a set date, or at a set stock price. It’s more complex than that, and can involve taxes and shit, but the sale itself was above board(ish).

They likely delayed the announcement of the fees to ensure a higher stock price for the sale, which starts getting into a gray area.

It was a scheduled sale. There’s a term for it, but it’s a fairly normal thing to have set up.

What it really sounds like is they looked to see that they had a scheduled sale, and then delayed the announcement of the new fees (and the planning of how they’d work) so that the sale price would be higher.

Or, another alternative here. They looked at the sale price, and thought “gee whiz this is low, how do I boost the stock price higher?” and since this idiot worked on microtransactions for EA, he thought that adding those to Unity made some sort of sense.

Bluesky isn’t exactly a twitter clone, it’s what Jack wanted Twitter to pivot to, but the board of directors refused to play ball.

So Jack spun up a separate entity and explicitly made it its own thing outside of twitter.

Mine was 19 years, but I was military and got sent overseas for a few years. When I came back, I hadn’t actually logged in for the entire time and my account had been reset.

My dream is a fallout game set in New Orleans, but made by Obsidian.

Give them permission to have greenery in the game as you run around a massively overgrown swamp (there’s some lore from unpublished games about an over-abundance of GECK testing in the area,)

Helping people actually build new shit from the abundant trees. The people would be that fun mix Creole and Americana.

We could have new enemies, like snakes and gators and shit. Maybe assassin vines and man eating trees.

My dream enemy would be a splinter group of Caesar’s legion and remnants of the Enclave.

As for music, dig deep into New Orleans history. There’s more than enough to put together a kick-ass soundtrack.

Cloud Imperium is not a tiny company. I believe it has about 1000 employees at this point, which means that the 600m has mostly gone to keeping the company going.

Chis Roberts is burning the cash rather than pocketing it. He loves his feature creep, and which forces devs to redo work. They’ve thrown most of the game out and coded it from almost scratch twice?

Every single Chris Roberts project has been like this. Development hell with new shit being added and no deadline in sight.

Not a grift.

A grift implies that someone is making bank off of it.

No, Chris Roberts is instead burning money by having devs do work, then redo work to add in some last minute shit that he thought of, then repeat until the feature creep completely overtakes their lives. It’s the Chris Roberts way.

Work is being done on the game, but remember that treading water is also a lot of work.

What happened to Elite Dangerous? I used to play quite a bit before I had to move and ended up on horrible internet. I’ve finally got good internet but haven’t gotten back into it yet.

They aren’t laundering money. No. They’re basically just setting it on fire.

See, Chris Roberts is the king of feature creep. He keeps wanting to add in the new shiny while not paying attention to finishing the shit that’s already on the list.

They’ve also thrown out previous work to start over again more than once.

I wouldn’t mind a remake, provided they did it correctly.

See, earlier games talked about Tamriel (edit; Cyrodiil), it was described as being a dense, bamboo filled jungle, The empire was described as being sort of like Rome, but with an ancient Chinese bent.

In other words, nothing like the generic European fantasy land that we actually got.

Imagine a claustrophobic jungle where adventure is just on the other side of the tree line. You could stumble on to hidden temples and cozy villages.

Sadly, that would require more than one type of tree texture. Otherwise, it would be a wall of blandness for the entire game, and if you’re doing a wall of blandness, you might as well open things up so that the player can see the horizon.

That’s going to play out as well. There’s a very good reason why X is a shit name.

But pair it with another word and it’s alright. But Musk can’t see that, because he’s a fairly stupid man who used to hire smart people to run his companies.

Musk has sure as hell set Twitter up to suffer quite a bit. It’s a train wreck in progress, but to the uninformed layman it just looks like Musk fucking shit up with little actual blowback.

The reality of Twitter is that it’s royally fucked, it’s just taking a while for the debt to build up to the point where it all falls apart. I expect a complete death of the company before November 2025. Just based on the debt load that Musk saddled the company with.

Reddit showed that they don’t care about their community or their volunteer mods, and lost most of the best moderators. That train wreck is coming, but might take a few years. Their IPO is coming, and they will do something that pisses off the community more when it does. I don’t expect a fast death, or a complete death, but the IPO will definitely hurt more than it will help.

Meta keeps getting fined by various countries, and keeps plugging along. Their Threads app is not quite taking off, but it doesn’t need to… A shit company that will likely be around for at least another decade. After that, predictions become meaningless.

Google is trying to do a web DRM to get rid of adblockers. I expect a massive EU fine in the future, and then they will quietly continue being evil. They really shouldn’t have gotten rid of that motto.

The thing is, the LLM doesn’t actually know anything, and lies about it.

So you go to How Stuff Works now, and you get bullshit lies instead of real information, you’ll also get nonsense that looks like language at first glance, but is gibberish pretending to be an article. Because sometimes the language model changes topics midway through and doesn’t correct, because it can’t correct. It doesn’t actually know what it’s saying.

See, these language models are pre-trained, that the P in chatGPT. They just regurgitate the training data, but put together in ways that sort of look like more of the same training data.

There are some hard coded filters and responses, but other than that, nope, just a spew of garbage out from the random garbage in.

And yet, all sorts of people think this shit is ready to take over writing duties for everyone, saving money and winning court cases.

The important note, the “premium” service works just a bit better than (or maybe identically to) the original before the company cut features in order to develop that “premium” service.

I had to run a boot disk because we couldn’t run Windows 3.1 and Doom 2 at the same time. Good times.

My brother had a friend who knew how to upgrade computers, but we never got permission to do so. And then some years later my brother’s friend was taken by the state because his parents believed some of that early Sovereign Citizen bullshit and stopped paying taxes. I think there were also some drug charges. It was just personal amounts of pot, but it was the early 90s, so they were fucked.

Same here, It’s the second thing I install on a new computer, the first being Firefox.

Every morning when I turn on the computer, I start Firefox and Thunderbird, and then leave Thunderbird in the background, quietly doing its job.

I hit perfection on a vanilla(ish) playthrough… I would say never again, but I currently have a heavily modded SVE play through in summer of year 1.

I’ll say, getting all those mods to play nice on my old laptop was not fun.

I actually had a nice gaming rig all priced out before my recent, surprise move.

Now I’m looking at laptops. They might lack the raw power of a full gaming rig, but the space savings are more attractive at the moment…

But that’s something for the future, I have to rebuild my savings a bit more before I start thinking about spending large chunks of it.
