When Below Zero came out it was clear that they had no idea what made Subnautica special, something that a sequel had no hope of replicating. Fear of the unknown and the drive to explore deeper. Once you’ve completed Subnautica you are a god of the sea, and that knowledge and experience cannot be lost.
Mobius Digital was able to make a successful DLC for Outer Wilds because they understood what made their game work, which is the player’s own curiosity.
Having been able to dodge all spoilers before playing the final release version of Subnautica, I could not imagine subjecting myself to a playtest or early access of Subnautica 2. Below Zero may have been a disappointment but I’d rather take the chance of discovering that for myself than risk ruining what could be a once in a lifetime experience by trying to play it before it’s finished.
The future of gaming is spending thousands of dollars on a custom built 1 to 1 cockpit and then yet more thousands of dollars on a headset that cannot possibly properly track where the outline of the controls end and the room begins to project a 3-dimensional space without clipping and breaking immersion.
It’s still relying on your own environment and this is describing an extremely niche market.
I’ve recently started using the archipelago randomizer mod to get another taste of replaying it, but unfortunately the satisfaction of completing a rando pales in comparison to that first experience.
I will never not recommend this game. It’s so good and I can’t wait to see what Mobius comes up with next.
Matrix has the unfortunate problem right now where all the big clients have matrix.org set as the default homeserver. Yes, it is a decentralized and federated protocol, but I wonder how many users are registered on matrix.org vs other servers.
I gave up on Below Zero around the time you’re given the blueprints for the hover bike. I just could not get invested in whatever linear narrative they were trying to push, so I put the game down and haven’t touched it since.
It feels like the devs captured lightning in a bottle with the first game but couldn’t figure out what exactly made it so popular and fun to play. It certainly didn’t do them any favours when they got rid of their composer Simon Chylinski. His score was so important at setting the tone.
Subnautica is one of my favourite games of all time and it kills me to know that we won’t get another one like it.
Does it really need new graphics and music? The old art style lends itself to being nearly timeless which you can’t say for the remake, and the music in my opinion is synonymous with the entire experience and shouldn’t be touched.
This is one of my favourite games of all time, so I guess if this gets more people to play it then it may be worthwhile
I’m a bit torn. On the one hand, Subnautica is one of my favourite games of all time and suffers from not being entirely replayable, so another game in the series should be a no-brainer.
On the other hand, Below Zero was a major disappointment and I’m wondering if Unknown Worlds even understand what made the first game so special.
I can mow my lawn with less than 150 watt-hours. The fact that a 60 second conversation with ChatGPT can surpass that is alarming.
