You have to… No, You NEED to Play Downhill Domination. There is NO WAY you won’t have fun playing that, trust me.
Oh! And Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 3! You don’t have to be a DBZ fan to have fun with that, is amazing and so chaotic!
Also, have you consider trying Devil May Cry 3? (Don’t worry about the number, it’s a precule). It’s kinda hard but so fun and satisfying.
No Final Fantasy because I’m not even sure where to start!
I had the same problem too, but after trying to play them chronologically (and failing), I learned that you can play any FF game at any time, cuz they are very unique and don’t actually relate one another.
Final Fantasy X is a great pick, for example, it helped me overcome my despise for Turn-base combat RPG.
And, if you’re up to some Big Robot Fight mayhem anime style, Zone of The Enders is Amazing.
edit: AND YAKUZA! HOW COULD I FORGOT YAKUZA!!?? YOU HAVE TO PLAY THE FIRST YAKUZA ASAP!!
Ehm, no? Christian Whitehead and co didn’t singlehandedly save the franchise, to think that is absurd.
Frontiers was the most acclaimed game of the franchise created by Sonic Team in years, and Sonic X Shadow Generations was created on the basis of Frontiers and was a success.
What about the movies? I’ve met more new Sonic fans who were introduced to the franchise by the movies than by Sonic Mania. It doesn’t even come close.
What Mania have to do with the fact that Sonic Racing Crossworld is one of the most anticipated games of the year?
Mania is great, and yes, it was an important part of the renaissance of the franchise, but not the only one nor the most crucial. We have to quit treating Mania like the second coming of Jesus, please.
I think it’s a reaction to the negative reaction the console had when it was announced. Just as there are people telling lies in favor of the console, there are those who tell lies against it. It’s a give and take between Nintendo simps and Nintendo Haters.
Sonic fan for more than two decades here! It’s always great to see more people interested in the franchise!
I would say that maybe it would be good to start with Sonic Generations (or Sonic x Shadow Generations if you can afford it, which is the same but with the Shadow The Hedgehog story as an extra), so you get familiar with the gameplay of both classic and modern games, have a sense of where it’s going and decide whether to go ahead or not.
I see that your interest is more focused on the characters and their dynamics, fantastic! the best part of the franchise in my opinion!. In that sense I would say that your best option to go deeper after Sonic Generations would be the mythical Adventure saga (Adventure 1 and Adventure 2). They are the games in which much more emphasis was put on the characters and the story.
Already after this and if you are hooked is that I recommend that you play the classics. You can play Sonic 1, Sonic CD, Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles in Sonic Origins (although you can also emulate the Mega Drive games), and then there is Sonic Mania. Why not start with the classics? Because they are very much of their time: pure gameplay, simple and not so deep story, but very fun to play!
You talk about games, but let me recommend you to read the IDW Comics in a complementary way. They are REALLY good! If I remember correctly, one of the artists on the comics, Evan Stanley, worked on The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog, and the story of the game plays out very similar to how the Comics read. It’s also where you’ll find the most depth in the characters (and you’ll encounter the best story arc EVER written for the franchise, EVER).
To sum up:
Good luck and have fun!
OK, fair. Here some other sources I found:
