
I’m completely speechless. This looks so terrible I thought it was a joke, but apparently Nvidia released these demos to impress people. DLSS 5 runs the entire game through an AI filter, making every character look like it’s running through an ultra realistic beauty filter.
The photo above is used as the promo image for the official blog post by the way. It completely ignores artistic intent and makes Grace’s face look “sexier” because apparently that’s what realism looks like now.
I wouldn’t be so baffled if this was some experimental setting they were testing, but they’re advertising this as the next gen DLSS. As in, this is their image of what the future of gaming should be. A massive F U to every artist in the industry. Well done, Nvidia.

If claims about video game characters setting standards for beauty, hold any substance, then the same logic should be calling this racist propaganda.
Leaving aside the question of artistic intent, does this not lead to every player having a different experience? Or maybe even every session? DLSS 5 seems to fill in a looot of details and even changing things. How are they making sure it’s the same for every player?
NNs are deterministic. Chatbot and image generator implementations just purposely add randomization to make them seem more intelligent.
Though depending on how much context they pull in from neighbours, you can get overfitting, like a character might end up with a different face depending on what’s in the background. Vague unreadable text could be replaced with random readable text that also heavily depends on what is seen elsewhere in the frame (assuming it’s trained on enough text that if doesn’t just make legible text illegible).
So while it can be deterministic, it can still be highly chaotic, depending on how exactly it gets implemented. And I’d guess that it’s a double edged sword where sometimes more context gives better results and other times less context gives better results. And I’d also guess that if you want to avoid overfitting, the amount of training data needs to increase exponentially with the number of inputs, assuming there’s enough neurons in the network to encode the necessary complexity.
Fuck that… every frame.
Although, that was the experience with Stable Diffusion a few years ago. WAN Video is good enough for remembering the face during the course of the processed length (4-5 seconds or so). But, as soon as it needs any sort of object permanence, like when the face is hidden, suddenly, it doesn’t know what it was looking at any more. Seems like a solvable problem with reference images. I doubt NVIDIA thought that far, though.

This is not even remotely close to being a released product so far as I can tell. It’s running on two RTX 5090s in series.
Doesn’t really matter, it’s something that shouldn’t exist in the first place. What’s the point of having artists put tons of effort into artistic vision when an AI company just comes and slops their shit over that vision?
Automation should replace menial jobs so we’d have more time for creative endeavors not replace creative endeavors so we’d have time for what exactly? Being broke? Doing menial jobs?
I think you already know. There will be a not-small sunset of developers who will slop their “vision” so you’re not losing anything when you slop it up some more.
Even if there are artists who will use AI to generate assets there’s still some human element of picking the asset the artist is happy with. There’s a miniscule amount of human creativity even in that case and this is removing what little there was.
The only good application of DLSS5 I could’ve think of is Euro Truck Simulator 2, hyperrealism would pair well with the game.
