They better be getting a fuckin paycheck too.
Don’t get to steal peoples work, then go “oopsie”, slap their name in credits, and think alls well.
Hundred percent agree. It should always be more expensive to steal and get caught than to not steal in the first place.
As I remember the original author said something in the past after they settled, to his satisfaction. We can only assume he got money, as no details was public. But at least the original author said he is satisfied.
Think the original artist is a woman iirc
Hopefully they also have a credit in their bank account.
Probably: https://www.eurogamer.net/marathon-plagiarism-scandal-resolved-satisfaction-of-artist
Hard to tell what “to their satisfaction” means though. It’s not beyond the realm of possibility that Bungee said “either you take just the end title credit or we yank your art and you get nothing”
I doubt they could have kept the artist silent if they did some shady shit. It’s not like Antireal signed an NDA with them.
My hope is based off the fact that Marathon will most likely be a make or break game for Bungie, and they desperately needed that PR situation out of the way to get the maximum amount of players onboard. Throwing money and a title at the artist is a much cleaner solution than trying some underhanded BS that might create an even worse situation.
‘by acknowledging our existence, you formally agree to whatever we say because we have some generic legal text that says so’ - corporations
Remember Disney can legally murder you if you watched Disney+ one time.
Considering how much shit Bungie ate over this (and rightfully so), I doubt they would’ve gone this route. All it would take is one Twitter post from the artist saying Bungie tried to stiff them again and the whole controversy gets reignited all over.
But they got eXpOsUrE :|
this is what i like to counter with when they try to pay me with exposure “point me to the good definition”
I don’t know if I’d want my name attached to this game.
they stole a bunch of the artists work during the game’s production; the fact that this artist’s visual design language basically set the stage for the entire product, even after the stolen work was removed illustrates how fucked bungie was when they got caught out. sure, some will say “oh it’s not bungie’s fault, one of their art leads stole it and didn’t admit it” nah fuck that, bungie understand how source files work - they should be able to see some progression work, at the very very least.
so they settled and put the victim’s name in the credits, because it’s the right thing to do after exhausting most of the wrong things to do.
As someone who grew up playing the originals, it would be kind of nice to try this game and see what it’s like. But it’s not worth using something other than Linux to make that happen. Oh well.
For those unaware, the original Marathon games were in the same vein of 2.5D fps as the original Doom. It had a more foreboding sci fi atmosphere, and has been credited as one of the first fps games to actually weave narrative elements into the gameplay itself.
It’s also freely available and open-source these days.
I didn’t think this had anything to do with the originals other than the name. I don’t know if that would be good or bad.
It is set in the same universe/timeline a couple hundred years later. Durandal is apparently showing up in game via audio logs.
When I looked at a gameplay trailer of the new one, it really didn’t feel authentic at all. It was more like looking at Destiny - Extraction Edition, with Marathon branding.
I’m really sad that it’s not a STALKER-like.
I really want to wander around the abandoned colony looking at things and reading logs without being in a time limited multiplayer match.
Like a shisno.
Also it is awesome. Dual shotguns or phasers? Why yes please.
Because artists can live of recognition, right?
The artist said it has been resolved to his satisfaction, and they listed him as a consultant, and consultants normally get paid, so I think it’s reasonable to assume he did get paid fairly, although he may not be able to disclose that directly.
Seems kinda backhanded, but okay.
