I recently finished playing The Outer Worlds 2 and it was pretty good. The big problem I have with both games is that the game mechanics feel a little shallow. Despite that I’m hoping there will be another game in the series.

There’s immense potential for character builds but almost no incentive to explore them. You feel the wasted potential as you play. The story is compelling enough to enjoy the experience but not enough to fill the empty pit you feel once you’re done. That’s how I feel about the first game. Does it apply to the second?
That’s more or less how I feel about the first game. I really liked the setting and characters, but found the gameplay underwhelming. Combat was especially boring, which made me go towards stealth or dialog resolutions just to skip it, except the game had a long chunk where fighting the local wildlife was the only option.
My gripe with the first one was that there just wasn’t enough to it. I finished it and I was hoping there was still a reason to play, but everything was done.
It’s far better than the game dragging on longer than it has any business to, IMO.
I like open world games that let you continue to explore and do things after the main story. If you enjoyed the game, you can keep going to get some more out of it. If you’re done, then you’re done and you don’t need to continue to interact with the world.
I guess I don’t see either of those games as being massive open worlds but just a modern implementation of old-school RPGs like the original Fallouts.
I didn’t say they needed to be big. The Elder Scrolls games aren’t particularly huge, yet people will continue to play saves for hundreds of hours.
And I know Outer Worlds wasn’t a massive open world, but there were different areas you could explore. Just a shame there wasn’t that much to explore in said areas.
There was a quickplay where someone figured out how to beat the game in something crazy like 10 or 12 minutes.
