I didn’t know enough words to parse that title on my first 5 read-throughs… but I think I’ve got it now. And that’s nice!

With your newfound expertise, could you summarize it for me?

edit: I get that a handheld gaming (I think?) system used to be Windows only but will soon officially support at least one much used Linux distro. Is there more to it than that?

If not, that’s still pretty cool. The words I didn’t know just made me uncertain.

I think GPD is a company, and they make a device called the GPD Win 5. And I think that device is in the class of Handheld Devices called “AMD Strix Halo”. And so a representative of GPD has said that the {GPD Win 5} will be the first {AMD Strix Halo} handheld device to ship with native Bazzite support.

Now, what I can’t answer without Googling, which I refuse to do on principle at this point, is what an AMD Strix Halo is, though I assume it’s like a Steam Deck. And I don’t know how anyone thought “AMD Strix Halo” was an acceptable name for a class of devices. And I’m also not sure why GPD thought GPD Win 5 was an acceptable name either. I guess, like, you win at games? And this is hopefully the 5th in the GPD Win family? But this name is too verby to me.

Makes sense to me. I also can’t be arsed to Google it so I’m just gonna accept your version as fact.

The turbo-encabulator has now reached a high level of development, and it’s being successfully used in the operation of novertrunnions.

Being a backer for the original GPD WIN, it is pretty disappointing to see they have ditched the clamshell design. I thought it was a decent design that could be refined down to a pocketable size, but I guess that will never happen now that its just copying the Steam Deck’s PSP form factor.

I loved the gpd win, it was such a cool little device. It sadly wasnt quite powerful enough, i really wanted to game with it, but the tech just wasnt there yet.

If I still had it I would probably be able to get some serious milage out of it but I sold it like a year after buying it. I miss it.

I still have mine and it’s next to useless, from the start it was kneecapped by its weak processor and windows.

I think I tried to install a Linux OS recently, but the biggest issue is driver support and long boot times.

Ive since replaced mine with a steam deck, which is amazing and very capable. I wouldn’t mind more power, but the form factor, and combo with a dock make it amazingly impressive.

Still, its much larger than gpd win was, would love a device that size again. I spent a whole paycheck on that thing, and would again if it was the same form factor.

It’s less powerful than a steamdeck, and runs arm, but the Ayn Thor might be what you’re looking for.

With things like Gamenative and Gamehub you can get pretty good windows emulation through box64. I’ve been messing around with it and it works pretty well (played dark souls remastered, BPM, Katana Zero, etc. on an arm handheld).

Edit: I don’t have a Thor, I’ve been messing around with Gamenative on another device.

I was amazed at how well x64 emulation has gotten on arm. The chip in the Thor should be pretty decent, but definitely expect pain points and worse support than the steamdeck/Linux (on x64).

I haven’t had any game not load for me yet, but performance is inconsistent (especially in 3D games). Something that seems lightweight will be sluggish and other things run surprisingly smoothly.

This site - https://www.emuready.com/ - helped me research to see if I could actually play the games in my backlog.

Edit: Also, most phone chips have shared RAM (if I recall correctly), so higher ram in the device means higher gpu VRAM. So going cheap on ram could impact what games are playable.
