We are truly entering a time in gaming where it feels like optimizations are a thing of the past, and the specifications needed to run 007 First Light are nuts. Thanks to the rise of DLSS, FSR and XeSS we’re seeing more and more AAA-level developers use them as a crutch for performance, at times setting them as an actual requirement to get the games actually playable.

And now it’s getting worse.

IO Interactive this week put up the required PC specifications for running 007 First Light, and you might want to be sitting down for this. To run it at just 60FPS with only a 1080p resolution they’re saying you need at a minimum 32GB RAM. Really? 32GB in this economy? And 12GB VRAM too. At least on the GPU / CPU side it’s reasonable.

12 GB VRAM for a game that looks barely better than Crysis from 2007 is not reasonable.

32GB system RAM and 12GB VRAM?

What on earth is that much system RAM needed for lol.

Web browser tabs.

They render each frame in Electron on an Android VM then switch to a new VM for every frame

Maybe 007 has a smartphone that runs fully emulated inside the game with 12 GB of RAM.

I meant for the game.

My laptop has 32 and my desktop 64. Because browser tabs. 🤣

Their games tend to simulate a lot of npcs, but I have no clue how they actually managed this one lol

Plenty of older games to choose from that work just fine on your current hardware, most new “AAA” games aren’t even worth considering.

Haven’t bought a “AAA” game in a decade. Been really easy actually.

I don’t know why but lately i’ve been having a lot of fun with S.T.A.L.K.E.R. G.A.M.M.A, played the first three games ages ago and then about 2 years ago stumbled upon a YT about the best mod for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Anomaly and was like wtf is that? something new came out and i completely missed it and then the whole rabbit hole dive to learn what it actually is, died 20 times in the first hour around rookie village because i couldn’t understand the healing system, but it’s rewarding to stick with it and from what i heard it’s on gog now where it’s kinda free but if you go to moddb and discord you can get it for free but is a bit more complicated and offers a ton of content and should run even on potatoes that are 15 years old. The point is 60-70$ for 1 new game that will run at 30 fps on your 5 year old rig at low settings isn’t worth it anymore when there are better older cheaper alternatives.

I reeeeaaaally want to play it, but for whatever reason I can’t seem to follow the Linux installation instructions well enough to actually install it…😭

Oh… that’s one of the reasons i still haven’t switched to Linux, but being on Windows for decades now has made me too lazy to get into trying to understand it properly and i’m currently on Windows 10 with disabled updates and i do have Linux on a few devices and it looks so much better now and so dumbed down so even i can understand it, i’m just too lazy at the moment till stuff starts breaking on Windows then i’ll have to get into it but Linux is picking up momentum and getting better and in 1-2 years it’ll be easier to understand.

Installing GAMMA, or rather NOT installing it, is one of the few frustrations I’ve had with Linux. I don’t play competitive online games, so no issues with anticheat. I wouldn’t say that Linux is any harder than windows at all now, just different things are difficult.

In 2020 I built my system to exceed the consoles in raw horsepower in every way. 5800X3D, 32GB DDR4, RTX 4080. Totaled about $2000. I think the exact same system today costs double the price, and supposedly just barely clears the minimum reqs? Up is down, down is far right

Same. 9900kf, 6800xt, 32 gb ddr4. Got it from a buddy of mine. That’s an insane jump for only 1080p 60 fps.

Just when you think it can’t get worse. Next thing, you need 1TB of RAM, because they didn’t even bother compressing the textures or make loading screens. Lol, no matter how good it is, I’m not buying this.

Why even give requirements for 1080 when 1440 is what’s more common

But that’s not true? 1080p is used by more than 50% of people using Steam.

From the Steam Hardware Survey (https://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey/):

Because that’s not true?

Latest steam hardware survey has 52.58% of people using 1920x1080 as their primary display resolution. The next most common res is indeed 2560x1440 but only at 20.59%, so it’s significantly less common.

I run both my monitors at 1920x1080, you are in the minority.
