A new PlayStation 5 rumour suggesting that the console can be jailbroken has caused one Star Wars game to increase in price by over 1000%.

Stuff like that happened with the Wii and 3DS. Suddenly a random LEGO game that’s not being produced anymore becomes the hottest game on the second hand market because it can be used to inject code and install homebrew.

Until someone finds another way in at least.

It felt great when the jailbreak for Wii came out and the vulnerability was in the Zelda game everyone had.

Original xbox too. Mech assault and 007 were the games on that system. And you needed to download the modded save and get it onto a save card too.

The PS2 also had an aftermarket disc you could buy that crashed the system as necessary to run copied games!

Then I think at that specific time I had an aftermarket flip-top as well so I didn’t have to use the eject button.

Then I got something to override the eject button so I didn’t need the flip-top! I didn’t want to do a lot of soldering to play international games.

Yeah it’s usualy how they work. At some point you could do it with a modified custom map for Smash Bros. IIRC before that another hack used that Tales of Symphonia Wii sequel everyone has forgotten ever existed.

On Wii U, they found a way to execute code from a vulnerability in the web browser, so that’s convenient. Just go to the right website and you can launch your homebrew installer that will replace the useless “Health and Safety” app.

There was a time you needed to sacrifice a legitimately acquired DS game on the Wii U (Brain Training DS was a popular choice, because it was free at one point. And most people don’t care about being able to play that, especially on a home console).

Also splinter cell. I still have my modded controller that I added a USB port to for moving saved games via flash drive.

That’s because, according to the rumours, the jailbreak method can only be done with a physical version of one particular game.

The game in question is Star Wars Racer Revenge, which, before the rumours, was selling for around $50. Now, listings on eBay are as high as $500, meaning that the price has increased tenfold.

At a certain point, if you want an open system, it’s gotta be cheaper and less hassle to just get a PC than trying to start with a closed system and pay $500 to try and set up a brittle jailbreak of it.

EDIT: I guess maybe some of these people are trying to get control of their environment specifically to cheat specifically in competitive multiplayer games in a console environment, and I suppose that it wouldn’t be the same on a PC for them, or maybe to pirate console-exclusive games that can’t be emulated, but outside of those very specific niches…

So in other words, scalpers heard about it, bought up as many of the damn things as they could at $50, and then raised the rate 10-fold. Which is why scalpers are some of the lowest scum on the earth.

Or you could buy one, and jailbreak ps5s and sell them on eBay for a profit, or offer it as a service. I can’t imagine breaking 500 dollars would be to hard

If it can be done with this game, I’m sure there’s a way to make a disk that does it without this game.

If it’s Outlaws imma laugh my ass off…

Edit: Racer Revenge. Never even heard of this one.

I hadn’t either.

It’s a sequel to star wars episode 1 racer that was released on PS2 however the version used for this is the physical PS4 version which was produced by limited run games in limited quantities.

God bless Limited Run Games and their bizarre, seemingly-nonsensical business model. They made a physical release of Doom with a deluxe edition where the box the game came in could play Doom. They’re modern-day Willie Wonkas.

I got outlaws from the library a few days ago and I’m guessing the forced stealth areas got taken out because it’s not a bad game

That’s one complaint I tend to ignore when seen mentioned, since the problem for me isn’t that the stealth is forced. It’s fine to have a stealth mission if the stealth mechanics work. The problem tends to be that it’s not just forced upon you, but also sucks shit making it more frustrating than it would be if the stealth mechanics were good. When shitty stealth is optional, nobody complains. When good stealth is forced, nobody complains.

Been having a lot of fun with the latest adtech ratfuckery where sites will crash themselves purposefully when they realize I have an ad blocker installed on iOS/iPadOS safari.

“There was a problem loading the page. Please click OK to learn more.”

No, there wasn’t a problem until you made one. Maybe I’ll get around to figuring out how to get around this but it’s really just had the effect of making me leave their site and never go back. Good job I guess?

I’ve started full-on blocking domains on my pihole for websites that have started to host their own intrusive/tracking ads, break due to other ad domains being blocked, have non-bypassable adblock blocker, or whatever other anti-choice nonsense. Like IMDb won’t load content with the ad elements blocked, so IMDb is just blocked as a whole. Fuck you, I won’t do what you tell me!

Hasn’t been a substantial degradation in experience, if I’m being honest. Barely even notice it outside of one-off searches and stuff, and having to find a new source of info about what I’m watching (if anyone has recommendations, I’d love them!!)

Between a pihole and uBlock in firefox, I don’t see any ads, but IMDb still loads content for me!

My pihole used to thoroughly block stuff on IMDB, but I had to rebuild it when my sd card failed, and since then it’s been much less reliable. I’m not really sure what’s going on with it, but meh, I’ll get around to messing with it eventually. Adblocking is ime pretty hit or miss on iOS browsers, so that was basically the only thing I used, so pretty frustrating experience now.

Like IMDb won’t load content with the ad elements blocked, so IMDb is just blocked as a whole.

You seriously must be doing something wrong. I run uBlock Origin in addition to a pihole for dns and i have no issues using imdb.

Site is okay in Firefox Focus, one site-related pop up to “level up your news game” or some bullshit but I’m not even going through my PiHole right now and there’s a ton of empty space where trash used to live

Quick edit: site is cancer is Safari even with Wipr 2, holy balls you’re right. I love Firefox focus hahaha

Yah, same on Safari. Only Focus deals with the page well. On Safari with a good adblocker, the pop up comes up and then the page says “page won’t load, click okay to find out why” and says “okay” or “cancel” which is obv shady ass malware or something.

PiHole kills the “level up your game” popup but it still loads the janky “click okay” shit in Safari… focus is the only mobile browser that can handle this horrible web site on iOS…

Not if you actually step into the 21st century and use a fucking adblocker.
