People like to spend money on good content made by a company that cares about its customers and delivers on its promises?

Nah, throw in [latest useless tech gimmick] and make it a live service with gatcha mechanics, always online DRM, and endless micro-transactions. Sincerely, every major game studio from Activision to Ubisoft.

Devolver was one of the few people I absolutely trusted to keep investing in new and upcoming indie stuff, this is sad to hear :(

Milking an IP dry for 40+ years like Nintendo sounds like an evil Easter egg to find in the game, not what to do with it.

Otherwise, me and the wife love playing it co-op.

Idk. All 2D Mario games seem pretty similar. Of course people are hungry for new levels to play, but there’s hardly anything groundbreakingly different from one to the next. And releasing things like Deluxe version of Mario Kart, a game that already seemed particularly derivative of the last entry in the series also feels a bit like milking. Feel like they’ve been afraid of making changes since double dash.

This is exactly why they put out Super Mario Wonder, which was pretty different (and pretty good imo)

Nintendo doesn’t really “dry” their IPs. They actually innovate between games, making sure each installment is worthy of existing. They don’t just slap a new number on the same content as last time, like the EAs, Ubisofts and Actiblizzards of the industry.

That’s why they’ve lasted. A game featuring Mario or Link isn’t so much a familiar IP, as it has become a seal of quality.

Doesn’t mean they aren’t guilty of a bunch of other anti-consumer bullshit.

Absolutely agree.

Pokemon, on the other hand …

Pokemon innovates! If you combined all the changes since gen 1, you’d have 3 gens worth of new gameplay. But mega giga tera Pokemon using z moves might be a bit broken

I have a lot more problem with the quality these days then the innovation level

Gamefreak needs a fire lit under their ass.

One they can’t put out by litigating it to shreds.

Why does it look like they’re making their 3D titles on PlayStation 3s?

Yeah, I soured on the studio when, after the Unity license debacle, they announced they’ll stop selling the game. After a bunch of people panic-bought it, they announced “it was just a joke” and that they were never seriously considering it.

I wrote them an email about this being a scummy tactic, and they told me they had a positive effect on the license change. Sure, deliberately creating FOMO to pump up your sales numbers (especially outside of e.g. the summer sale) is a very effective protest!
