Wrapper of syncthing for Android. Contribute to syncthing/syncthing-android development by creating an account on GitHub.

Per the GitHub readme:

This app is discontinued. The last release on Github and F-Droid will happen with the December 2024 Syncthing version. Interactions (issues, PRs) are limited now, and the entire repo will be archived after the last release. Thus all contributions are preserved for any future (re)use. The forum is still open for discussions and questions. I would kindly ask you to refrain from trying to challenge the decision or asking “why-type” questions - I wont engage with them.

The reason is a combination of Google making Play publishing something between hard and impossible and no active maintenance. The app saw no significant development for a long time and without Play releases I do no longer see enough benefit and/or have enough motivation to keep up the ongoing maintenance an app requires even without doing much, if any, changes.

Thanks a lot to everyone who ever contributed to this app!

This is extremely disappointing news. I have been using the Syncthing-Fork version, but since it is based on this app, this may be the end for that app as well.

Fed up with companies making good open source projects hard to exist. Even if your shitty google cloud was the only option i still wouldn’t use it

Well that’s not good… I’ll have to find some other way to keep my phone in sync…

Maybe proton drive’s sync is finally good enough…

Just in case anyone thinks nextcloud is the solution, it isn’t. Can’t do two way sync at all on Android.

I’ve been using Autosync for years with good results first with Drive and Dropbox and now Pcloud. Supports a lot of different cloud services though not Proton which is why I haven’t started using that yet.

I wonder if you can set it up in termux?

pkg search syncthing shows that it’s packaged, version 1.28.0.

Any experiences with running cron jobs in Termux? Is it reliable?

Syncthing-fork still seems to be under active development, at least for the time being

Yeah I’m in the he same boat has worked reliably for a long time for me. Backs up my folders when I get home.

The proton drive app does not have a way to automatically sync a specific directory. It’s so infuriating, because they already have this implemented for the pictures.

The app in general is a long way off being a reliable every day use app. So many missing features.

I’ll vote with my wallet by not buying from companies with ties to the Chinese government, thank you very much.

So I would rather Google own your data, so they can actually reach you and screw you?
China can’t do anything to you due to legal boundaries, - us gov which is in cahoots with big business can and will reach you and screw you

Definitely piqued my interest. Did some digging and the main Android app was more-or-less on maintenance mode over the last few years as is.

I use the fork on one of my three Android devices and will likely transition the rest for future updates.

Could’ve put the app into maintenance mode instead of archiving it.

Someone would have to maintain it. And someone would have to make sure it’s not Jia Tan.

Why would google be responsible for this?

They kept declining app updates and running the dev around in circles until they gave up.

You can provide the updates via f-froid and github. So that’s a non-issue.

Is syncthing-fork going to get long term support, I wonder? I sure hope so. Syncthing is literally one of my favorite pieces of software in my life, and there’s a lot of software in my life.

I hope the desktop application also continues to receive full support forever? I love syncthing.

Unfortunate it to see it go down, but I prefer this one over the original:

https://github.com/Catfriend1/syncthing-android/releases

Check it out if you still need it on your android device.

The dev also dropped from the playstore over their practices, but builds are still up on their repo.

I’m surprised you’re the only person talking about syncthing-fork and that it’s not the top comment, it’s the only android client I’ve actually used

https://f-droid.org/packages/com.github.catfriend1.syncthingandroid/

Here’s the f-droid repo for folks who might prefer to get it that way

What specific practices?

No idea, dev didn’t go into detail, just that they closed Google play publishing account.

Why let Google play be the reason to stop development? There are many people who use f-droid or download releases or apks from other sources.

Google is trying to force out indie developers, do we really want to listen to them and do as they want?
