CIV:BE sort of scratches the SMAC itch.

I’m sensing the beginnings of a meme here…
Speaking of Alpha Centauri sequels, have you considered Beyond Earth?
I’m waiting on the remake. Preferably with great voice acting and less time spent in the unit builder.
For me, Stellaris was the sequel to Ascendancy I always wanted.
Hasn’t everyone figured out the scam yet? It’s very common.
Release game. Slowly role out content over years in dlc. Make new game with a few core changes and take all the content away. Slowly role out content over years in dlc.
We’re on the 7th iteration people. It’s the same with fighters other than smash. You’re just going to pay to buy the same stuff over and over again.
Also madden, fifa, ncaa and all the sports games
Alpha Centauri was awesome, but so were a lot of the other games. Colonization was a lot of fun. Call to Power is the civ game I want a real sequel to. Going way into the future tech was a lot of fun, and being able to build cities at the bottom of the ocean.
Of course, I think the whole franchise has gone downhill since Civ IV, so take my opinion as you will.
Beyond Earth was the spiritual successor. You might not like that, but you’re probably never going to get your idea of a “real” sequel because BE didn’t do well. Might as well wish for a second season of Firefly while you’re at it.
I think one of the biggest issues with BE attempting to follow in AC’s footsteps is that the factions were not distinct, and it felt extremely generic. BE’s factions were all similar, played similarly, and all had the same options for development and could all take the same evolutions. In AC, not only were the faction leaders ideologies revealed in quotes in the tech tree and secret projects, it was inescapable in the game mechanics. The reason I feel Stellaris is a closer sibling is that it managed to mimic something of how it felt to be an idealogical leader attempting to make sure your values and your goals for the future were the ones that were supreme. BE was “civ in space”.
And jesus, the writing in BE! There’s only so many times I can hear “haha look at these funny space people who think the dynamo is an invention from antiquity”
You know, part of me wants to do a Civ marathon and try to remember the rules in the first few games I haven’t played in decades. Alpha Centari would be on that list, though.
We are waiting for Chess 2.0 since literal centuries
