It’s because there are modchips and even software jailbreaks for the console. It’s why it sold super well during the end of its lifetime in low and middle income regions.
I used to refuse change at the bakery when I was a kid and would instead pick something out of the stack of pirated PS2 games. Something like two US dollars? Three? Not an egregious sum for my child self to waste every so often. The death of the on the ground piracy culture of the third world really sucks, although those beautifully dodgy TV boxes give me hope for humanity.

PS3 was also the cheapest blueray player at the time, but the weird architecture impacting game availability and lower demand for blueray movies prevented it from gaining the same popularity
I’m guessing that the direct profit from a Steam Machine (i.e. the hardware) is a pittance compared to the profit from the game sales that it will generate.

Console gaming now is stupid. The Xbox and PlayStation are both just x86_64 PCs with different colored plastic shells.
The original Xbox even had a hard drive and DVD ROM player connected by IDE cables so it didn’t change much.
The PS5 base security keys got leaked, it’s going to be a full fledge PC once the modders get to work. Might be the cheapest way to get ram now hah.

I’ll be converting my PS5 to a Steam Machine once the masters have done their work.
I’d also love to have a normal PS5 partition and a Linux one. This would be the best of both worlds, but I think I’m dreaming too much😇

Indeed and two years of advancement for steamboxes / Linux gaming distros will be the nail in the coffin. These are the last of their kind.
