genuine question: do people use twitter to catch up with folks?

As much as I hate it, I still occasionally use fb to message old friends, and instagram to keep up with friends. twitter… used to be for following celebrities but i’ve gone off that since (and if i wanted to, i can do that on insta).

“we’re very sorry… that we got caught. rest assured we will do everything we can to ensure… that we do this more subtly in future”.

what mods do you like? There’s a bunch but I don’t know what’s good!

Is anyone still playing Command and Conquer Generals (+ Zero Hour)?
There's a certain cheesiness and non-political-correctness that's refreshing. Also discovered a few mods like Shockwave that I wanna try.

if that happens occasionally, it’s fine. I’ve seen apps which update every other week and do this bullshit.

That’s still (slightly) better than apps which force close when they’re not updated, and don’t allow you to do anything at all.

I hope to God you wouldn’t be gleeful at me getting fired

I wouldn’t be “gleeful”, but I can definitely see why the company was within their rights to fire you.

This is like those nutbags who shut down a highway to protest the environment or something, then accuse the police of being un-environmental when they’re invariably arrested.

first of all, you lost me when you pointed to reddit.

second, they protested not just within the office, but in the personal office of one of the higher-ups. If you blockaded your CTO’s office as a means of protesting world hunger, I don’t think that would go well for you either.

I don’t think peertube will succeed in scaling because video streaming and transcoding takes so much more resources to run than lemmy, and I can’t see volunteers doing this for nothing in return in the long run.

Tens of thousands of lemmy users can be hosted on hundreds of dollars per month; I bet it’s 10x more for peertube.

many sites have anti-adblock but most adblockers now have anti-anti-adblock in place.

Good. They should have done this ever since they started moving to their own Tensor chips. Once you control the processor and the firmware, you’re not at the mercy of other companies removing support

oh no, they can no longer sell a phone that’s 3 years old, how will they survive?

Don’t really care how the Android logo looks, I just wish Google would fix the ridiculously oversized quick toggles and unnecessary whitespace they added in Android 12.

Oh, and the nesting of mobile data/WiFi toggles under another layer.

There are things i like about ios and things I like about android. And to be fair, both companies have somewhat converged slightly over the years (and learnt from jailbreakers/rooters).

The main thing I still like about ios is that swipe up for control center works better, especially when screen sizes are now all >5".

Things I still like about android:

  • you can sideload apps without resorting to exploits
  • you can transfer files directly onto your phone without using itunes or some weird hack

Ultimately I usually end up on android because the sideload/file transfer thing becomes a deal breaker, but I like that ios provides Google and other phone manufacturers with a reason to continue innovating.

It sucks that Samsung is the only good phone manufacturer with a well-rounded flagship that can (mostly) be used with one hand.

The US navy ran on windows xp for so long that they paid Microsoft to continue maintaining it after EOL.

On the other hand, I’ve found Samsung phones in the past 5-8 years to fit my needs in a way that other phones (including pixels and iphones) don’t.

not as bad as I thought, actually. there’s been a ~10% drop in monthly active users since the reddit spike

that’s because they all drastically changed the rules. I’m talking about quiet quitting. That’s harder to spot.

Why would the admins do that? The mods would have reopened the sub and followed the rules.

Unless the admins lay down a new set of rules… in which case the mods can lazily comply with it again, and on and on

Thanks!

I think instead of risking the sub being moderated by scabs, the mods should have just reopened the sub and quiet quit - no megathreads or stickies, anyone can post anything as long as it doesn’t break reddit rules, no bots, all mod reports get approved automatically.

The mods should have reopened the subs and quiet quit - no rules other than reddit’s rules.

basically expect that Twitter and Threads will both suck up as much as they legally can.

oh no! they have all the posts that people publicly posted onto the Internet!

I kinda stopped using snapchat once I realised it was Instagram stories but worse

I know nothing technical about how the fediverse works, but I can potentially see a bittorrent-like future for the fediverse, with people contributing spare compute power or bandwidth to the network when they’re online.

It’s hard to make it undetectable. The lcoation API has to return something. If the location is “null” or “disabled”, then apps would know.

Most apps play nice. Apps which force close/refuse to work without excessive permissions, i try not to use.

Would you use one? I think an app would definitely be more accessible to most people for a lower price. But it doesn't work as well to motivate you (peer pressure and having someone there still works best).

Meta says its new speech-generating AI model is too dangerous for public release. Meta announced a new AI model called Voicebox yesterday, one it says is the most versatile yet for speech generation, but it’s not releasing it yet: There are many exciting use cases for generative speech models, but because of the potential risks of misuse, we are not making the Voicebox model or code publicly available at this time. The model is still only a research project, but Meta says can generate speech in six languages from samples as short as two seconds and could be used for “natural, authentic” translation in the future, among other things.
