Slogging through FFXIII here. It’s super linear and repetitive, but just what I need right now.

This riddle has me at a loss and I will not search the internet for passionate athletic girls.

I was pretty surprised by the price Disco Elysium is going for.

My backlog has reached that point where I need to be a responsible adult and finally beat some games, so this time I’ll pass.

But the PS games like Horizon: Zero Dawn are tempting.

David Cage understandably gets a lot of flak, but the Quantic Dreams games aren’t actually bad at all. I’ve played Fahrenheit, Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls and Detroit. And while they aren’t top-tier excellent, they were all memorable.

Yep, OP uses his Switch way more than expected. The Deck is an extremely flexible device in a similar form factor. I’ve been able to beat so many games in my backlog with it, just excellent.

The EU is a relatively large market, and it wouldn’t make economic sense to develop and produce EU-specific devices. I’m pretty sure you’ll also be seeing replaceable batteries.

If you haven’t published a few papers then your preference in acronyms is irrelevant.

AI comprises everything from pattern recognition like OCR and speech recognition to the complex transformers we know now. All of these are specialized in that they can only accomplish a single task. Such as recognizing graffiti or generating graffiti. AGI, artificial general intelligence, would be flexible enough to do all the things and is currently considered the holy grail of ai.

Been intermittently trying to finish Jedi Fallen Order, but for some reason I gave in to my kids that kept getting on my case that I should try the best game of all time: Stardew Valley.

Highly doubt it. So many other browsers on so many platforms (mobile, tv, Auto,…) are built on Chrome and will have this by extension.

Highly doubt it, because pretty much all games are compiled for x86, and would require dynamic recompilation, which I’m turn costs performance.

Or… they could perform the recompilation beforehand just like the precompiled shaders. Hmmm… that would make it pretty viable!

I was pretty impressed by what I saw from Kotlin. Pragmatic and terse, not as academic as Java. Reminds me of the shift away from EJB to Spring. Have been reading up on Rust and thought that with the LVM and WebAssembly (also for the backend), it is perfectly positioned as an alternative. What do you think?

Sadly, I’ve haven’t been programming for a while, but I did program Java. Why do you consider it legacy and do you see a specific language replacing it?

Maybe this is the socialist European in me, but I can’t believe that. Without a contract, the employer isn’t obligated to pay you at all and you’re not obligated to work. Even if it’s just sealed with a handshake, there is a legal framework for both parties. If you just treat it all like an EULA and say whatever, just let me work for you and it’ll work out, then that’s your problem.

If my workload means I consistently have to put in more than 8 hours a day, it’s my responsibility to report that. I have a contract for 40 hours a week, I’m not a slave.

I played Heavy Rain and somehow managed to get the ending where everyone died. That kept me off gaming in general for quite a while. Brothers was mentioned here, I can recommend it too. Papo y Yo is a allegory of your relationship with an alcoholic abusive father, and it didn’t make me cry outright but was pretty heavy.

This is why it is so super important to educate kids on media and tech literacy. They need to understand that YouTube is not the only source of videos, that you can not only buy your stuff on Amazon, and that Google is not the only place to search. They need to know that nothing is free, and that they are being monitored. And that there are choices.

I was super mad with our kid’s school, because they only allowed the kids to have Microsoft office. It’s not about the tools - they’ll change by the time they graduate - but about the results.

Oh yeah the Dreamcast! Never saw a console with such a quirky lineup. My favorites were

  • Rez
  • Tokyo Xtreme Racer
  • Cosmic Smash
  • Crazy Taxi
  • House of the Dead
  • Space Channel 5 (right left chu chu chu!)

I just completed Blacksad: Under the Skin. Engaging story, somewhat janky controls. So now I’m in between games and am wondering if I should really start with Mass Effect.

In general, the hardware on consumer devices is not as well supported as on business devices. And actually, older stuff is better supported than new devices. Anything between 1 and 10 years old should be ok. You can always try out Linux on USB before installing to confirm if stuff like touch, the camera, fingerprint reader or automatic display orientation work.
