Everything on the Internet is public domain.
If I disappear for 3 weeks, assume I’m dead.
I like both the piped bot and the tldr bot for the same reason: I don’t need to visit a horribly bloated, ads and scripts ridden web site, which most news sites are. So I take the bot as a really good service. Also consider that without it I’d say most will just read the title and may make conclusions based on that. I’d say that’s a bigger advantage than the downsides you mention.
(Yes I use adblocks and stuff. Most news sites are still a drag to visit and difficult to read.)
I think the bot is fine in principle. The YouTube web site is fucking terrible and it’s nice to introduce people who don’t use automatic redirects or 3rd party clients to an alternative.
My problem is that it would offer only piped.video links. We don’t know how long the piped.video instance will work, but well that’s the case for any instance. Ideally a bot would provide at least two links - piped and invidious, and maybe cycle or randomly choose instances. Perhaps under a spoiler tag.
Of course it’s up to community mods to choose, but I think bots like this or the tldr bot provide value even if they can cause that “Reddit moment”.
I only really watch foss stuff, which should be exciting, but I get tired as it’s always much of the same news:
So I’m not exactly thrilled about anything either, tho for every different reasons
Haha they definitely can’t claim there was no space for a headphone jack indeed.
But I mean, electronics is tiny, it can go with the same motherboard as a phone. The only thing it needs to be larger is a battery, and that’s a capacity/weight balance.
Speakers maybe, but that’s also a function of thinness so I don’t know how much of a difference size makes. Thin laptops sound just as crappy as anything else thin unless the vendor shells out for some expensive units.
I feel like that’s a game that needs a big screen to be enjoyed, can’t imagine playing on a handheld.
It’s one of the few games where I went to collect all the collectibles, because I loved the exploration, environment, atmosphere and mostly the controls too.
It also looked incredible for the time - I first played it on PC when it came out, later on PS3 where it was only fine if quite downgraded. Yea the presentation and sense of wonder are very important for that feel.
Some of the action is way over the top, especially in later parts, and the amount of abuse Lara survives is just stupid. It’s one of those “ludonarrative dissonance” games for sure.
They’re really nothing. If it wasn’t for the marketing, there’d be nothing of interest. I’m honestly tired of hearing about this brand all the time.
Want to make a phone for techies? Make one with a relockable bootloader, documented hardware features, available spare parts, removable battery and SD card.
As long as they sell spare parts and make schematics available, they can sell as much stuff as possible.
I guess there is a small incentive to buy more phones for friends and family, that’s not a bad thing.
But they should stop with the ewaste earbuds and rather think of something else people might use. I hear home automation is a big market, and lots of space for open, sustainable products.
I tried and the app doesn’t seem to work on my phone, but in theory:
Rule > add rule > add trigger > device starts > yes
Add action > start another program > scroll down > select app (pick app) + select activity + choose manually > probably pick “main” activity
Save rule (this where I get an error and idk why)
Back to overview > start service
Someone lmk if this works, the app complains about writable memory and won’t save rules for me.
Amateur here, can only convey what I remember from reading. In sleep mode the the cpu wakes up regularly to do things that are needed for background services and connectivity.
Now, “regularly” may still mean hundreds of times a second between milliseconds of sleep. These wake cycles are also synchronised with other parts of the system, especially networking.
Similarly, cpu will sleep even if the phone is awake but not very active, but will wake more frequently.
I’d say the change in Calculator from W7 to W8 was more than cosmetic. Never have I stared at my 27" 2.5k monitor so stupidly than when I first launched calculator on W8 and that thing blew up over the entire screen with no proper way to leave it on top of other windows.
I think that’s when it really had to be clear to everyone that MS has no idea how humans use computers.
I kinda understand why they do this. Android has slowly been going the route to be only for dummies that shouldn’t be able to touch anything. And most device makers are completely fine with it, evidently.
What’s needed is a really decent alternative OS, or several, with widespread support across devices.
Yea there’s Graphene, but in terms of devices, do you want this year’s Google, last year’s Google, or an overpriced recycled phone? And in terms of firmware the situation is even more difficult.
Even 10 years later I’m still mad at Firefox for letting go of their FF OS.
80-20, but don’t be too strict about it either.
65-35 doesn’t make sense. Yes the battery is at its most stable around 50%, but then you charge it too often and that’s not great either, because it goes through heat cycles rather than charge cycles.
Also batteries degrade by themselves anyway, so it really depends on the quality of the battery itself how long it will last. Inconveniencing yourself too much won’t give it much extra life.
Just never discharge fully, don’t charge fully with exceptions, and charge slowly and you’re good.
If I wanted a charger with 4 ports I’d buy it. If I wanted a braided cable I’d buy it.
You really should try it. People don’t know what they’re missing until they use it.
I have the same experience with lots of pack-in products. One that comes to mind are camera (DSLR) neck straps. They’re absolutely dreadful, and shiny advertisements to boot. At some point I tested a bunch of 3rd party ones and found how much better they are. Yet people kept acting like I’m the weird one for paying 20-50 $€£ for something that improves the experience so much.
Same thing here. If for nothing else, not including those crappy accessories just makes people think about the alternatives.
There’s a reason why accessory brands even exist. OEMs actually rarely know how to do accessories well.
let’s say a 0.5 to 1 meter
So FYI standard length is 1 metre, which tends to be a surprise to people when I tell them… 0.5m is super short for anything but a PC connection or powerbank. Again I suggest you try a good, soft, braided 2m cable if you charge using a power brick.
that can also do basic data transfer
What’s “basic”? You know, with most phones you only get a USB2 cable (if it does data transfer at all), again showing how useful they are.
People rarely do data transfer via cable these days, and a really good USB3 cable doesn’t cost 5 cents, so again to me it makes sense to just get one to your liking.
None ever does or has. Only boutique brands like Razer may give you a braided cable, but nobody ever gives you a cable longer than 1 metre, never mind a charger with more ports.
But let’s say they do. Let’s say they include a selection of 3 good cables, and a charger with 4 ports that supports all the competing protocols, and throw in wireless charger too. Well congrats, now every phone, tablet, watch, camera and speaker is 50 $€£ more expensive, comes in a box twice as large, and we’re back to the problem of having too many useless chargers that stay in boxes.
Btw I use magnetic cables anyway. So whatever they include cable-wise is useless waste for me.
And all of that sucks, except not including a charger.
It’s complaining about the one thing that actually makes sense, and letting everything else slide.
Pack-in chargers and cables always suck. I don’t get how people use them, especially those cheap rubber 1m long cables. Utterly useless.
And chargers with one port? Who shells out 1 grand for a phone and has just one device? You can get an excellent charger with 4 ports and support for all the stupid proprietary protocols for like 30 bucks. Why would I use a pack-in one?
Complain about lack of replaceable batteries, headphone jacks, expandable storage, complain about Google’s monopoly and data harvesting in phones, not that they don’t give you some useless extra crap.
Make it open source on F-Droid, compatible with the Fediverse, and maybe you’ll even get 500 installs.
