I’m generally opposed to anything that involves buying new hardware. This isn’t the 1980s. Computers are powerful as fuck. Stop making software that barely runs on them. If they can’t make ai more efficient then fuck it. If they can’t make game graphics good without a minimum of a $1000 gpu that produces as much heat as a space heater, maybe we need to go back to 2000s era 3d. There is absolutely no point in making graphics more photorealistic than maybe Skyrim. The route they’re going is not sustainable.

Fuck 'em then. I’ll stop playing video games before I switch to windows, but I’m sure there will always be indie devs willing to take my money in exchange for a playable game.

Sims 3 is better than sims 4 but sims 4 runs better on shittier hardware. Sims 4 doesn’t have an open world to the degree sims 3 does so it doesn’t have to process every sim walking around in the entire world and their unoptimized pathfinding at all times.

Perhaps now in the age of higher single core cpu clock speeds, maybe it’s not as bad.

Edit: a word

Android transfers are really fucking stupid. I refuse to use Google drive or complicated sync that barely works and I refuse to pay money for an ftp transfer or samba share app that actually works, so I made a php file upload server. Yes, I see the irony. But I can upload files from my pc or from my phone and download them from my phone or my pc. It’s so much faster than any other method I can think of. Even using Windows where the android USB drivers are allowed to work is slower. Runs into issues less often. Php is such a piece of shit but in my case it’s a less shitty piece of shit than any possible alternative.

These days it’s like rpgs and first person shooters just evolved into the same genre. The boomer shooter isn’t dead, it just lives on as a game mechanic that plays a part in larger games. Remember that turn based shit in kotor? This was before putting first or third person combat in every game was normalized and it sucked. Imagine if Skyrim had turn based combat instead of direct control real-time combat, no one would still be playing it. I’d be willing to play a halo starfield like rpg maybe but they’d probably enshittify it too much so never mind.

Nah I’m good. I’ll wait for someone else to mash X4 and No Mans Sky together into 1 game instead. While that’s what all I expect Star Citizen to be, we all know it’s probably a lot less than that.

I think I’ll wait for PCSX2 2.0 2 to come out.

I agree except for the crafting lol. I love being able to be like “you know what, fuck society” and building up my skills to find ways to make my own stuff without paying in-game money for it. I guess too many games have crafting mechanics that do suck though so you are right about that.

Spicy, I like it. On one hand, that’s all true. On the other hand, we rarely get games that are even as good as No Man’s Sky is now.

I agree with the fast travel but not the pause. There has to be a pause. Stuff happens in real life. What if you get a phone call, someone rings the doorbell or you have to take a shit? Unless you’re doing really basic quick stuff like a sudoku puzzle or an online match that only lasts a few minutes, or playing a really really slow game, that’s just not reasonable. It may not be realistic to have a pause function as we don’t have a pause in real life but sometimes liberties have to be taken be taken to make it more accessible to people.

Starfield is actually a good game.

Starfield has excellent gunplay. Difficulty levels get unbalanced in late game without mods. If you enjoy feeling like a superhero cool, otherwise download a simple mod to rebalance things. It has weapon customization too. The only other space game that has weapon and spacesuit customization that I know of is No Man’s Sky. No Man’s Sky’s ship combat is half decent, it’s ground combat isn’t for me. There’s like 1 “gun” in the entire game and there’s not enough diversity in what little ground combat there is. I want to have to infiltrate a station full of bad guys not shoot at an occasional angry girrafe or flying drone.

Elite Dangerous has excellent ship combat but that is it’s only strength. It’s a compete grindfest, they regularly patch every new way of making fast money, and I cannot fucking stand it. Maybe the lower playerbase has forced them to be more generous recently but I’m not booting up the game to find out. Starfield’s ship combat is basically the same, maybe a little better balanced, or at least balanced in a way that’s more enjoyable.

The rpg elements of Starfield are actually enjoyable except for a few dumb quests. Starfield is the only Bethesda game I’ve completed the main quest in and I thought the multiple universe thing was executed well. Starfield’s ship customization is superior even despite the No Man’s Sky ship customization update. I think they missed the mark on the different part classes (why is a large reactor 3x as large as a small reactor the same amount of power for example) but that’s easily fixable with mods.

Tldr all games of this genre have problems but at least most of my issues with Starfield can be fixed with mods. I just hope theu continue updating Starfield despite the internet constant rage. I’m glad we got Starfield instead of Elder Scrolls 6 and I’m not sorry.

Good to know. I bet it wrongly detects gog Skyrim as pirated. I’ll be avoiding it just so I’m not supporting this type of thing.

I really hate how so many mod developers plaster WE WILL NOT SUPPORT PIRATED. THIS WON’T WORK ON PIRATED. FUCK YOU. all over their mod pages.

Are they deliberately putting in code to detect pirated copies? Are they putting that there because they’re sick of idiots installing their mods on a 6 month old release fucking it up and clogging the support forums complaining about it? Do game developers regular prosecute mod developers who don’t take steps to not support pirates so they have to do that to cover their asses?

It’s just eerie. And it stinks.

By not only supporting but requiring an older game version, this mod is entirely going against that typical weirdness. It will be interesting to see if someone’s going to try to put a stop to it or not.

I hate Nintendo and everything they stand for with every fiber of my being but graphics in modern Nintendo games don’t seem to be much worse than a average unreal or unity game.

All I ever see are online screenshots though. Maybe BOTW has too many solid colored textures on models where they should’ve made it textured but that’s kind of the style these days so meh. Back in the day Ninendo graphics were quite dogshitty. Wii used the same av cable as the N64 and could output a maximum resolution of something like 854x480 while the other consoles could do 1080p for example. Puke.

I’m not sure how much shittier the N64 was than the Saturn but the PS1 was better. Saturn games could at least handle better textures and weren’t as limited in terms of media storage size. Cds could hold something like 650mb. N64 carts could only hold up to 64mb according to Wikipedia but I seem to remember there might have been some games with larger roms than that.

I’m still waiting for operating systems to have the ability via ui buttons to prioritize ethernet over wifi. I’m sure there’s a bunch of Linux terminal stuff you can do instead but meh.

Dealing with proton shenanigans is much easier than dealing with all of Windows and Microsoft’s bullshit.

The windows “desktop environment” is so slow and clunky. It makes game development or really any workflow requiring the use of multiple open directories almost too hard. It makes me wonder how they even develop this piece of shit at Microsoft HQ. Do they have an in-house developers ui that’s maybe a little more efficient? Do they have special accelerated hardware that makes it run faster than fast on the development machines? I guess the windows server ui is faster than the windows 11 ui and maybe it has a better file explorer so maybe that’s what they use.

When you need to install a program, all the choices available are too spammy and corporate. The hp printer driver is 300mb and takes 15 minutes to install on a ssd on Windows. Meanwhile on Linux you type something like “sudo apt install cups” and 15 seconds later you have printer drivers.

It’s pretty easy to identify the sweaty mlg titles that lock down everything with windows-only anticheat before buying them. Beyond anticheat games, I can’t even recall a game I couldn’t get running.

I sold my switch that I stupidly bought when they first came out. People are still buying them and I got more than I expected. Switches with lower firmware numbers are probably worth more money due to jailbreaks and stuff but I didn’t research switch mods or anything.

There was this editor that let you make esm files. I can’t remember if it was already in the game folder or you had to download from steam but it must not have been hard to set up. I remember using it to make one of the buyable houses really big on the inside.

Starfield could have been a way better game if all they did was fuck it up like 45% less. They could have alternatively just delivered on their promises of making the game easy to mod and let the community handle the rest but they fucked that up too. Only the most dedicated of Starfield fan would have the patience to sit down and do all the shit it takes to add a new quest for example. Iirc even Skyrim came with a mod editor with ui that was easy to understand. Right now all we have is a community xedit project that’s somehow even harder to run on Linux than Starfield is.

Rpg maker

not on pc

Wonder what big brain came up with that

I’m just waiting for the video game market to crash so they stop making games altogether. Then indie developers and open source games can rise in the aftermath.

It’s getting to the point where more and more games are overpriced privacy invasive trash and frankly I’m tired of buying new hardware all the time just to get to play this regurgitated dogshit. I only play old stuff now. I’m playing descent for msdos right now and having a blast, later I’ll play some 2005 battlefront 2. Fuck enshitification.

That would likely also destroy the entire indie dev economy. I highly doubt Microsoft would price things in such a way that continues making it viable for small or single person development teams to make profit.

I’m sure the biggest reason they want to buy it is so they can try to put a stop to gaming on Linux. The prospect of putting windows-only anticheat in the steam client and steam runtime probably has Microsoft executives foaming at the mouth.

If Nintendo would put half the effort into game development as they put into picking legal fights, maybe they could make profit off their video games enough they wouldn’t have to do lawsuit trolling.

Sony is just trying to follow Nintendo’s example of generally shitty behavior.

idk, maybe we need to figure out how to get by with basic laptop opengl graphics. An Intel HD 4000 would have been a groundbreaking graphics card in 2005 but today you can barely run a unity project with one. More serious effort needs to go into optimization and efficiency I think and if that means everything has to have 2005 era graphics (which aren’t even that bad) then that’s what has to be done.

Making your own game engine an using open source 3d engine then filling in the rest is too much work for most indie devs but as enshitification continues this will eventually stop being the case. Tux kart was made this way and it can run on a potato.

As inflation continues to outpace wages, surely more people will start preferring this. $1000 for a gpu is a joke. If I ever develop an indie game my target system is going to be like, a 1.6ghz core i3 and garden variety basic opengl capable graphics card.
