Danger: caustic
I’ll tell you what it is. Freedom.
We can make servers, host servers, have our own communities and set our own rules. Hell, I haven’t played a Valve server in five years.
Overwatch isn’t a matter of better or worse. It fails to do, at base value, what I value TF2 for, freedom.
Add however many neat little gameplay mechanics you want, if I can’t play the game the way I want to, I’m not going to get into it or care.
shrug
Walk up to area full of rather boss looking dudes, fuck em all up, take their gear and then spend 30 minutes ooing and aaahing over said gear has been a cornerstone gameplay loop for many games for decades.
It’s, dare I say it?
fun?
Fill the area with cool lore, art direction and fold it into a story and hey, maybe it’s a little more fun.
There’s really nothing like it.
Stalker takes all of the advantages games normally give you and crush it down to “You ain’t important, bullet-cushion.”
Firefights feel like they have stakes and risk is intense. Nothing that happens can just be shaken off, everything needs attention. It’s not a normal FPS.
There’s retro streamers and smaller/older streamers that aren’t so hype and “ON IT” all the time.
Sometimes I just want to be around the community that surrounds a game I am enjoying. If I am playing a JRPG, I may spend more time in a JRPG discord going back and forth with users, or go find a streamer playing it and pick their brain a bit.
It helps you not feel so alone with the experience. You may be the only person for miles and miles to boot up Breath of Fire IV, but rest assured, someone out there wants to talk about it.
Every teenager on YouTube has suddenly become a professional gaming industry analyst for EA, Microsoft, Ubisoft and Bethesda’s failures, and could probably put it on a resume.
“The problem with the industry today…”
Fill in the rest with whatever and you’ve got hours and hours of angry, dissatisfied content for others to nod with.
“ABYSMAL! UNINSPIRED!”
That’s the spirit!
To put it bluntly, if they make something I want to buy, I’ll participate, but this live service shit isn’t anything I want to buy, so.
They’ll learn eventually, I don’t care what they make. It’s all mostly cookie cutter garbage. Support devs going against the grain like GSC and indie devs. Let AAA die. What’s it alive for, constant disappointment?
