Today’s game is some more Metal Gear Solid Delta. I made it to the boss fight with Pain, and man. Fuck this guy. I liked the boss fight but those bullet bees were a pain in the ass. I ended up using some napalm grenades saved from fighting ocelot to clear away his bees and then mow him down with the AK.
As much shit as I’m giving it though, I kind of like it. Like. I’m given tools to fight this boss, but there wasn’t a specific way to go about it I feel like. Yeah. I could wait for his bees to vanish. Or I could light him on fire and power through him. It was kind of cool.
Ocelot’s fight was kind of where I got an idea for just how the game is though. Like. The game was serious but also kind of wasn’t afraid to dork around. Like the long cutscenes of him reloading or Ocelot fighting off wasps by spinning his revolvers like fans. It reminds me of how people talk about the Yakuza franchise. It’s serious sometimes but other times it’s just goofing off.
I have had one major complaint while playing. And it’s minute. It was this cave. My brightness was calibrated right but it was so fucking dark in here I had to raise it manually. I found a torch though that made it a little more forgiving so there’s at least that.
What more appropriate to end today with than talking about the save dialog. I like how it ends with a conversation about movies usually. It’s fun in a way that the game really gets self aware. I like it. I remember one of them was about Godzilla. My favorite one so far though has been this James Bond one.
Can anybody weigh in on how this compares to the ps2 version? I LOVE snake eater, but have been hesitant to pick this up 1. Due to the price tag and 2. Worries about how the game holds up
Never played the original personally, just watched folks play it. It’s a very faithful remake/remaster, and in some ways feels like a different game with the addition of the third person follow-cam and some of the gameplay improvements (the quick camo menu is great). It’s still just as hard and the feeling of crawling through the jungle undetected is just as rewarding.
I really enjoyed it, forgot how short it really was, but the huge number of different tools and ways to play adds great replayability.
Was the original for the PS2? I feel like an idiot kind of now because I thought it was a PS3 game like the 4th one and I’ve never been able to emulate those right
Yeah, there were two releases on the PS2 actually. The original had the classic static MGS cam and the updated one (I want to say “Snake Eater”) had the free cam controls that we know and love.
The cave is supposed to be stupidly dark. There’s a few ways to mitigate it, like the torch, but even just waiting around for a few minutes will lighten it up as Snake’s eyes adjust to the darkness. You can also use the glowing mushrooms, I think, or the cigar to help a little in the meantime.
It does very, very slowly drain your health, but you would have to intentionally try to die from it. It’s kind of been an in-joke in MGS since the beginning, the cigarettes (cigar in 3) are occasionally actually useful items, such as using them in 1 to reveal laser tripwires if you missed the thermal goggles, but, well, tobacco is bad for you after all, so -1HP every ten seconds or so while it’s equipped.

Does the cigar actually hurt you? The description said it’s bad for your health so don’t smoke very often, so I took that as just don’t smoke at all
