Hi everyone, I recently purchased a new car (24 mazda cx5) that supports android auto. I’ve never had this feature before and so I’m new to it, but so far it’s been working really well. I am having an issue with voice commands, specifically for calling and texting. Voice commands work for changing music or playing something else from my playlist, but when I say “call mom” for example, it pops up what I said on screen but then nothing happens. I have tried multiple times with different ppl and I have tried sending texts. It will register what I am saying but then it just goes back to Google maps. I know calling works through the car tho, because I have recieved calls and if I use the touch screen to access my contacts, I can make call that way. It will also notify me when I recieve a text message. And I know I have service when I have tried to make calls. I tried searching online but didn’t have much luck. Thanks!

I think with your example of “call mom” there’s some relationship thing in contacts you have to setup, even if the name of the contract is mom. I’m not sure how you tried with calling other people, but I’d suggest changing the contact name for your mom to a very specific name, and then try using that name and saying something like “Call Mary Elizabeth Jones” and see if that works.

Also I’d try initiating voice input different ways. Your car button might just trigger the input and send it to Google Maps. what if you hit the microphone button in Google maps on the screen and then said the command. What if you said “Hello Google”?

Personally I’ve always found voice input hit or miss, and Google has been constantly changing things it’s hard to even keep things straight on what you’re supposed to do. I would say your best bet is to try every conceivable option till you find what works, and then use that for as long as you can until Google breaks it.

sounds like it could be a permissions issue; try Settings -> Apps -> Android Auto -> Permissions and make sure it has phone and contacts listed.

I just checked and it had every permission accepted.

Are there any updates for the vehicle’s unfortunately infotainment system?

Are there any updates for your phone?

Is your phone hooked up to Android Auto via physical cable or via Bluetooth?

Are there any settings on the vehicles infotainment system you can set or change?

Are you using a voice assistant like Gemini? If so, have you trained a voice model?

Have you tried contacting the dealership to see if there’s a defect or a problem you aren’t aware of?

Also, have you tried a different phone? Had a friend try to use their phone to connect and make a call using voice commands?
