Another one for the Google (and Valve) graveyard, this time it's Steam for Chromebooks as it's being killed off early next year.

Pour one out for another Google graveyard product.

I didn’t even know this existed lol.

The Google graveyard is huge.

Someone should just re-make all the products google killed off and by the end you’d have a competitor to google. Literally no thought needed to have a business plan or model, they’ve already killed off everything people love, lol.

Sadly the CEO of Proton turned out to be not a great guy.

Ah well we better all go back to a for profit company that’s clearly malicious then?

Proton isn’t for profit? Huh TIL. Anyway, they both support Trump, so both aren’t great. Make of that what you will, sliding scale of ethics and all that…

Google would just buy that company just so they could kill all those products again.

Good. Let it die. We don’t need Steam on ChromeOS, because it’s not as powerful as if you build your own machine. Not to mention that it’s actually using a weaponized Gentoo.

They are adding linux support tho? Can’t you just install steam using crostini? I’ve never used it just heard of it.

I’ve installed Steam using Crostini in the past and played CounterStike using it. It was technically playable, but not good performance wise. Although I do have a higher spec Chromebook now, so maybe it would be better. Although many Chromebooks are lower spec, so it’s possible there aren’t enough games that are reasonably playable.

I’m guessing the point of this project was to make it as easy as installing Android apps, a “one click” install.

Just tested again with a few different games.

  • Counter Strike Source, same results.
  • VVVVV, played just fine.
  • Animal Well, wanted a controller and then threw an error.
  • Binding of Issac Rebirth, failed to load.

So it looks like I’d have to dig in and figure out why some failed to play. Any big games are probably out.

seems unnecessary to support it natively if the goal is to have ppl run linux apps that way

That’s too bad, I tried this out years ago. I was able to play a handful of basic games on the cheap device.

But after upgrading to a handheld and installing steam os, I’m never going back.
