Meanwhile I avoided playing because I wanted to wait until it was out of early access and had its full release… Seems like I’ll either never get that, or by the time I do, the game will already be dead

Could be that for sure - like I game a bit every day, but if I was doing this same project, all of my screenshots from the past three weeks would have been from Crash Bandicoot 4 - and the three weeks before that would all be from Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2. I basically just beat a level a day. If other people were chiming in every day maybe I’d mix it up.

It could also be self-selection bias - like, I would never do a project like this because I know it would be super repetitive. Maybe they were willing to do it because they already played a hyper-varied selection?

You have more variety in the games you play than I have in the foods I eat

How many of these 54 have been unique? What are you doing that you play a different game almost every day?

Which SNES emulator do you use?

I played both. Both are excellent games, and both also have flaws.

I think Zelda was by far the better game - HL isn’t really on the same level as it at all, design-wise, story-wise, or or in terms of things to do.

HL’s strength is definitely the world itself - the Hogwarts and Hogsmeade areas in particular are both incredibly well done and very faithful to the source material. The other areas are just alright.

I’d say HL’s weaknesses become most apparent if you’re a completionist. Things can get very repetitive if you’re going for 100%. I did, and I honestly think you’ll like it a lot more if you just don’t.

It’s still lots of fun though. Zelda was my most played game in 2023 and HL was kind of far behind, and everything else combined would still probably be a distant third.

I absolutely agree with the other people saying HL is generic and propped up by the IP. But for me that was enough.

Only thing they missed was a popup asking me to please not leave if I move my mouse near the top edge of the tab.

This is a really long video - but I found it very worth the watch. Ceave has almost nothing but good takes - and it’s a fun retrospective for people who played the game years ago, while giving a lot of interesting information on the history and lore of the game. His insights into game design, mechanics, and development border on psychic at times - the guy has a gift.

Hollow Knight is an incredibly competent game on pretty much all fronts. In my opinion, Hollow Knight is a masterpiece and we will discuss all the things that make it so great in detail in this Hollow Knight retrospective. However - the one thing that I find most fascinating about Hollow Knight is an aspect of the game that is seldom discussed. The most fascinating aspect of Hollow Knight is that it exists in the first place - because to put it mildly - Hollow Knight’s existence should not be possible. Hollow Knight was developed by only three people, in roughly three years. Three people managed to produce a game that looks this beautiful, features a combat system with a skill ceiling this high, crafted a beautiful world this big, wrote lore that deep, and crafted gameplay this fluid. Three people did a job that puts most teams of 60 people that work for half a decade on a game to shame. How did three pull this off? In this Hollow Knight retrospective, we are going to investigate this question. We are going to find out how it is possible that Hollow Knight even exists!

Sure - but that’s a gimmick that’s pretty widely enjoyed. It’s not like the 3DS’s 3D that pretty much everyone turned off after giving it a shot, or like the Wii’s motion controls that most people got sick of before the console retired. As far as gimmicks go it’s arguably their most successful ever.

By that I mean the fact that it’s handheld - if you were mostly talking about the detachable joycons then I’d agree at least somewhat, especially since they removed that from the Switch Lite - but it is pretty handy in a lot of situations still.

I wish they would focus more on making consoles that LOOK and FEEL good when you’re playing instead of trying to create the next new thing no one will care about in 5 years.

Isn’t this basically what they did with the Switch? It’s very low on gimmicks that never get used (infrared? Touchscreen?), its games on the whole look pretty good (Most first party titles), and people still play it over 6 years later. Also Nintendo has nothing to do with the development of Pokémon - so while shit, they hardly deserve the blame for that.

I got Bloons TD6 at full price a few days before the sale, and have 6 hours of playtime in it already. It’s 75% off in the sale.

Is there any way for me to get a partial refund to the discounted price at this point, or do I just have to deal with my own poor timing?
