I understand why they have the requirement: They want a 3d model of your face that they know is good enough so that they can make the facial interface.
What I don’t understand is why do they not accept a 3d model you create yourself? Using photogrammetry and a friend, it would not be too difficult to get a good 3d model of your face. Heck, they could even do a service where you send the photos of your face directly to Bigscreen where they process it for an extra fee. Boom, now there is no iPhone requirement to buy the product.
I got it specifically for Linux usage. I had a 2060 before that, but got fed up with NVidia’s drivers and replaced it with the ARC. I only need Vulkan and OpenGL, so the performance pitfalls on Windows don’t really apply to my usage. It works perfectly on Linux, but I ran into issues literally just trying to update the drivers on Windows.
As far as I know, the only “stable” linux phones are the Pinephone and Librem 5. The former runs hot and is painfully slow and the librem is very expensive for what you get. Some android phones can be reflashed but there are always core hardware features missing like camera, usb and GPS. I wrote this comment on my Oneplus 6 running postmarketOS, so you can make it work if you accept the shortcomings.
And the big tech companies also stand to benefit from overhyping their product to the point of saying it will take over the world. They look better for investors and can justify laws saying they should be the only arbiters of this technology to “keep it out of criminal hands” while happily serving the criminals for a fee.
I mean, if you don’t mind paying more, handhelds like this exist.
Just went to login to my dedicated minecraft Microsoft account just for it to force me to add a secondary email before it would log me in. Enshitification at it’s finest.
