Looking back at HMD’s models after 2020 I think this is pretty plausible, with how all their smartphones during this period are likely ODM model - you can tell with how they all use the same Unisoc or MediaTek SoCs.

I mean, only smartphones that are outsourced to Chinese ODMs would ever use these chips, you’ll see this with other brands too.

Perhaps zombie brand mode would also be a suitable term, if not for the recent Skyline and Fusion which feels like genuine efforts from HMD.

Here's to you, AnandTech - thank you for the detailed smartphone reviews all these years.

What happened to HMD/Nokia between the 2017 - 2019 period?
Back when I was a high-school student in this 2017 - 2019 era, HMD released a lot of different devices, including a diverse smartphone portfolio covering every segment imaginable. What caused them to drop this strategy in such a short time, and went forward with a strategy focusing on affordable smart-and-feature-phones? For example, the 9 PureView was their last flagship released in 2019, and its successor 9.3 PureView [never materialized](https://www.gsmarena.com/nokia_93_pureview_5g_reportedly_delayed_until_next_year-news-46471.php). I suppose you can blame it on declining sales - from what I could find, HMD's sales indeed took a nosedive in 2020, but a more concrete answer would be much appreciated here.

No shit, not everyone can shell out money for an iPhone or your typical flagship Android phone, even in the US.

I myself use Google’s Quick Share for this. Falling that, the Send Anywhere app can also work - it’s not the fastest compared to Quick Share, but pretty reliable long as you have decent internet.

Escape from Tarkov, but with the single player mod and further addon mods for AI, ballistics, QoL features etc. With enough mods Tarkov can be the most realistic FPS shooter around with an excellent body armor system and ballistics that actually makes sense imo.

My 5 something years old Fenix 5s still works great with like, a week and a half battery still lol. So yes, it’s just that brands like Garmin don’t advertise as much as Apple’s.

Same, Garmin has made me swear off from owning any modern smartwatches. I mean having to charge every other day is just nuts lmao

I wouldn’t recommend the C700N if ANC is important, since it’s ANC is quite weak and passable at best compared to the LinkBuds S or WF-1000XM4.

Fairphones have always used Qualcomm SOCs, there’s nothing new here. I don’t understand the fuss here if I’m being honest.

Maybe it’s just me but I’m surprised that Apple isn’t taking more of a stance regarding EU’s new regulation on smartphone batteries, especially considering how greenwashing-loving and anti-repair Apple is.

Yeah that still depends on the instance in which posts came from, imo here on c/Android it’s already a lot less US centric than r/Android was.

Just a r/cars thing. Mostly because of how Nissan relies on subprime lending to sell cars in the US and Reddit likes to makes fun out of it.

It’s mostly just a cars subreddit thing. In big subs like r/cars Nissan cars are a popular target to hate on, because of their tryst with unreliable CVT transmissions in the past plus Nissan’s dependence of subprime lending in the US.

*Why American Teen Hate Android Phones

Also I’m very glad that Lemmy is a lot less US defaultism than Reddit is. It’s pretty tiring having to constantly hear about Democrats vs Republicans, or green bubbles, or Nissan cars bad, you get the point.

Price and durability. I don’t know, I can maybe get one eventually if I really want to, but shelling out like ~$1500 USD for a unproven screen design is pretty yikes to me. Plus, since my LG V60 is still serving me so well I really see no good reason to replace it.

Yes this. Pesronally this is like 75% for me considering how reliant I am on online banking nowadays.

Gesture, it’s a lot more elegant than navbars UI wise.

I miss the day when the Galaxy Note series was considered big and gets desiginated as a phablet, now pretty much every phone is a phablet. And small phones are next to impossible to find nowadays.

I’ll be furious if that happens to my phone someday. F

Quite mixed on the idea of foldable phones.

On one hand, they’re pretty cool and I especially the Z Flip/razr format for its nod to the flip phone era and the portability.

On the other, their durability is er…questionable and there’s no telling if the screen will last as long as that of traditional smartphone’s. Oh and plastic screen means scratch galore, too.

Also good idea with these post mods, I see a lot of high quality comment here! It’s starting to feel like the Reddit of old times here, well without the toxicity I suppose.

Same! It’s such a little known yet useful feature.

Simple Gallery, no nonsense gallery app that’s pretty fast and has a built-in image editor.

I haven’t noticed any toxicity on the lemdro.id instance at all, what am I missing lol?

I still daily a SD865 (LG V60) to this day and while it’s losing steam in newer mobile gaming titles, it’s still flawless for daily usage. Can’t think of any complaint really.

I like Fallout 4, spent hundreds of hours in it, and couldn’t blame you with that comment at all. For all the improvements that FO4 makes to graphics, gameplay, etc, it really trounces on the story side in general.

Been using it for an year now and it already had password management from the start.

Wait what, I thought it’s hip and cool to hate on large corporations online?

Smart Launcher for me. I’ve been using it since the Smart Launcher 3 days, and it’s really still a launcher with no-nonsense UI that doesn’t change a lot, for example you can still modify it to feel just like SL3 with the left side app menu and gestures. Plus the design language used in SL6 is just beautiful to me.

Liked it so much I bought the pro version of SL3 and later on, get the full license for SL5 (and onwards).**

Headphone jack. I’ve used multiple LG phones before, currently using the LG V60 and seems like Sony is the only way to go in the future, unfortunately.
