While I haven’t tested these extensively, you could give them a try (both are foss):

  • SD Maid SE: App Control > Export App
  • Kvaesitso: long tap > 3 dot menu > Share app

First one is designed for managing / cleaning up app storage. Second one is a launcher, so it might be a bit janky if all you need to do is transfer an app

Sounds like they want everyone to download directly from the Play store, and not in a way they can’t control?

Same trend as the official OS only apps, overzealous ‘Play Protect’, etc.

You can still use Files by Google to share Android applications in a similar manner. Under Categories, go to “Apps” and then the overflow menu for what you want to “Share.”

A lot of other apps still support it, including FOSS ones, unless the play app did something extra?

For example

  • SD Maid SE: App Control > Export App
  • Kvaesitso: long tap > 3 dot menu > Share app
  • F-Droid for all of their apps

I went back to your previous post and saw that you’re seeing the same issue on desktop and mobile, which makes me lean towards the browser extension issue. Try one of the apps, or try booting Firefox in troubleshoot mode?

Same as the other person that commented on your original post a few hours ago, I’m not able to replicate your issue. A lot of people are using the instance and I haven’t seen mention of the sorting issue, so I suspect it might be something with your browser / extensions setup.

You’re free to comment how you feel, especially because it sounds like the experience hasn’t been that great for you, but I still feel that people here are happy to help you troubleshoot. :)

Some other steps you can try:

I recently got a small keychain device for free as a cheap promotional item. It looks like one of these: https://powerstick.com/powertag/ It asks that you install this app: [Spot 2.0 Bluetooth Finder](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.powerstick.spot2&hl=en_CA) Some concerns right away: - It requires an account - It said that my password was too long - It seems that these apps will need 24/7 access to location in order to work properly, so I'm not comfortable making an account on some app I've never heard of **So my questions:** Q1: If someone is given a similar device, is there a FOSS app that they can use it with? So far I've found: - BLE Radar ([FDroid](https://f-droid.org/en/packages/f.cking.software/), [GitHub](https://github.com/Semper-Viventem/MetaRadar)). It looks promising and I haven't played with all the custom profiles yet. While I was able to connect the device and see it on a map, I don't see an option to ring the device from the app. Since it's a key ring, I imagine most people would use it to find their keys in their home, for which the speaker would be helpful. - iTracing2 ([FDroid](https://f-droid.org/en/packages/net.sylvek.itracing2/), [GitHub](https://github.com/sylvek/itracing2)). This one is very minimalistic, and while I could get it connected, it seems to only work in the `device > phone` direction, where you can press a button on the keychain to initiate an action on the phone (ex. ring the phone) Q2: If someone wanted to get a good quality version of this, which brands do you recommend? Ideally it would be accurate and be compatible with some FOSS app(s). I remember seeing Chipolo mentioned in some other thread here, but I don't know if they meet those requirements

It could be that many tornados have been near schools, (justifying the drills), but only that many have actually hit the schools (which would be catastrophic without the drills)

There are mock location apps that spoof your location, but it might be a lot of extra work to turn on the spoofing before opening the app each time. It also doesn’t prevent leaks if it does stuff in the background.

You could also try using the mobile site?

This is part of the problem for me. I can’t dismiss the popup unless I hang up, and I don’t want to do that in case my number gets marked as “active”.

So I sit there and wait till I can use it again.

Also I appreciate the detailed alt text :)

Canada, we face the same issues as the US for telecom stuff

I don’t think anyone answers the phone now, unless they recognize the number.

Most of the calls I get are

  • spam
  • spam
  • someone sent me a time sensitive message, so they ring me once to respond faster
  • spam

As of 2017, the rules in Canada have been the following:

All new devices in Canada must be sold unlocked, and carriers must offer to unlock existing phones free-of-charge

For sure! Turns out I was subscribed to two, the later being an automated mirror of a subreddit

[email protected]

[email protected]

There’s also a community for the Hermit app it turns out [email protected]. That one seems abandoned

It comes on sale somewhat often, I saw a sale post the other day on Lemmy somewhere.

There’s also Native Alpha on Fdroid which does something similar

edit: decided to give it a try. Interestingly, both Lemmy and Mastodon are listed in the “popular” section of the built in apps

I’d love to have tags on apps. So many apps have a simple minimalistic name on the app, which is impossible to remember. I make do by renaming the app with terms I might search by.

ex. “Authenticator Microsoft”, or “Vancollect City Garbage Trash Recycling

This browser extension “would allow Facebook users to automatically unfollow their friends, groups, and pages, and, in doing so, to effectively turn off their newsfeeds, which Facebook algorithmically sorts to drive user engagement,” the Knight Institute said in a statement.

Interesting, I’ve been doing that manually for a while now (not Facebook though, I haven’t opened that feed in years).

Here’s an article from 2021:

https://slate.com/technology/2021/10/facebook-unfollow-everything-cease-desist.html

Looks like it’s open source, but very dead

  • Sorting by new gets around 1-3 posts a day, site wide

  • the top post of all time was 6 years ago and it was discussing the shut down of Voat

So while they might not have recent hate speech, it seems like that’s the community that started there. Sort by top all to see the context

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Misskey

My understanding is that Misskey is a lot older, from before the Fediverse and ActivityPub was a thing. It’s very popular in Japan, so it might not have as much content from other places.

Firefish (formerly known as Calckey) is an actively developed fork of Misskey that hopes to add many requested community features.

So firefish was started because Misskey development slowed (or stopped?), but it has had issues recently

https://fediversereport.com/an-uncertain-future-for-firefish/

Personally I would filter and only look at platforms that are open source and Fediverse/ActivityPub compatible. Otherwise it will suffer from similar issues as the other alternatives (centralization, lack of community/momentum, takeovers).

As long as the platform federates nicely then it really comes down to personal preference. The content and communities can grow independently :)

The platforms that come to mind for that are Lemmy, Kbin, Mbin, and Sublinks. I’m probably missing some other good ones

Sure, but while I understand the sentence structure I still don’t know what it’s talking about without the article itself

I think the point they are making is that we use these short titles even though we don’t need to. It might be correct, but why not make better use of the medium

I just want to say that your recruitment post was really nicely written :)

This was the closest for me, but the project has been slow for some time as the devs are busy with other things

https://github.com/LawnchairLauncher/lawnchair

In your defense, the first paragraph of the article was confusing

Despite initial opposition from Apple and Google, the Epic Games Store plans to broaden its digital marketplace to iOS and Android platforms later this year. The company has started discussions about the upcoming launch of it’s new third-party store for mobile devices, although the platform will only be available in the EU thanks to the DMA, until Apple enables third party app stores in other areas.

It says Google opposed it, but the third party store thing is specific to Apple

Would it be possible to downrank / soft filter the instances that are more at risk? I’m not sure what that would look like exactly, but it would be nice to find a middle ground between accepting spam and defederating away

Body camera video equivalent to 25 million copies of “Barbie” is collected but rarely reviewed.

I get this is done to hook the reader, but I feel annoyed how these comparisons don’t actually make it easier to visualize the scale

For around $50,000 a year, Truleo’s software allows supervisors to select from a set of specific behaviors to flag, such as when officers interrupt civilians, use profanity, use force or mute their cameras. The flags are based on data Truleo has collected on which officer behaviors result in violent escalation. Among the conclusions from Truleo’s research: Officers need to explain what they are doing.

I guess that sounds like a good thing? Flagging the videos instead of waiting for complaints

I’d be curious what the original data was from, the link just says DataReportal.com ?

Can you login with xmanager? If so, is there a risk of your account being banned?

I guess it makes sense to enable it by default (since it’s meant to be the private OS it should be ready out of the box), but it might help to advertise the difference more is what I’m getting?

https://xkcd.com/1053/

It’s always fun when I can recommend something better to friends, especially when the new thing requires no new compromises

Adblock plus --> uBlock Origin

LastPass --> Bitwarden

uTorrent --> qBitorrent

It’s super important to keep an eye on any shenanigans from Google, but it can’t be done by raising alarms on incorrect information if the alarm bells are to be trusted.

Nicely said, I might repurpose that phrase in the future :)

You could also look into the guides and courses by Apple or a local library. Those are designed to help people get used to the OS and they could help with common points of friction

Darn this would have been nice, but looks like it no longer works (at least for me)

Cool I’ll poke around at the options here. Ultimately it would be nice to have something simple (after some initial setup anyways). In my imaginary scenario, non-techy people would also need the network, but this is still be useful in other cases

I’m not sure if that’s the right term, but basically services that don’t require a connection to the wider internet. The post body goes into it a bit more

I use signal day to day, but it would be nice to know about options for a local mesh network before I actually need it.

Thanks! That link wants me to add a repo to fdroid, but I was able to find it by searching

Are there any good mesh network apps? For messaging, file transfer, app cloning, etc.
Use cases would be regions where wifi is unreliable, on road trips or flights, etc. I remember some paid apps from years ago, but I imagine there should be good Foss options too

I was thinking something like that for Reddit/Lemmy might also help people switch over

Best way to customize the share menu?
I don't like how my friends, family, and work contacts are mixed in to the menu when I press share. I see a random jumble of people from various apps on my device. I want to clean it up and just keep a few apps there (ex. Copy to clipboard, open in Firefox, share to signal) and remove the rest. Is this possible anymore? Some old threads suggest ShareDr but I can't install it since it's for an older version of Android

Are persistent notifications not a thing anymore?
I didn't really notice till now, and searching around I see lots of complaints in various communities for different apps. Turns out it's intended behavior in Android 14. The only persistent thing about it is that they don't disappear when you hit "clear all", which is something I never do because I dismiss the ones I need to instead of nuking everything. Feels like a big step backwards and I don't understand the reasoning behind it. It was always possible to dismiss persistent ones if we really needed to (long tap etc) Is there any workaround to get it back? **Unnecessary backstory:** I use a notification creation app to leave important TODOs as pinned notifications so I see them when I check my phone. I've missed some and I thought I was setting them wrong. Turns out the notifications can be dismissed accidentally, making the app useless. My use case isn't that important, I can find some other workflow. But there are other more important apps like blood sugar monitors and home security/alert apps that use persistent notifs for functionality.

Came from this post: https://lemmy.ca/post/9854590 Looks like it has a lot of games I haven't seen in decades. I want to grab some of them, but I'm not familiar with the website.
