Bullshit penalty, I think we can all agree on that.
Not like the Netherlands deserved to win, they played quite badly. Just feels bad to go out like this. I didn’t watch every game but this referee was the worst I’ve seen all tournament.
Really missed frenkie de jong and I’m disappointed Koeman didn’t put on van de Ven or Frimpong.
Rooting for Spain in the final. Lesser of two evils but they play much better football and have a far more likeable team (and country).
I agree, my example and this situation don’t compare. I was just wondering about where the line is. At what point does actual interference matter?
Honestly I think the biggest controversy about this was how long the VAR took. They spent multiple minutes to make this decision which seems a bit crazy.
I’m biased but just to play devil’s advocate: where is the limit?
Imagine everyone is on one half of the pitch except for three players: an attacker with the ball 40 meters from goal, the goalie who is 25 meters from goal, and another attacker who is right next to the goalkeeper, blocking the goalie’s path to the goal.
The attacker with the ball shoots the ball through the air into the empty goal, with not even a tiny chance the goalkeeper could ever make it. Is it offside?
I would argue it isn’t and I think almost no referee would say it’s offside simply because the goalkeeper didn’t stand a chance to get anywhere close to the ball.
This is an extreme case, but I feel like today Maignon also would never have gotten that ball.
It’s difficult because you can’t always know if a goalkeeper would have been able to reach the ball without any interference, but there’s gotta be some sort of line between true interference and irrelevant interference that would never change the outcome of what is about to happen.
I probably agree it’s offside. As a Dutch person I’m frustrated now, but if I were French I’d be annoyed if the goal had been allowed.
Was hoping Austria could score but honestly they didn’t really come close to a goal (in the second half anyway) and France had a few opportunities to make another.
Ridiculous what Mbappé did when he came back on to the field just to sit down and waste time. Would be happy if they changed the rules to make that a straight red.
Don’t like Real Madrid either but rather they win it than PSG, Man City, Chelsea, etc.
But yeah actually I think of the remaining teams I’d love it if Dortmund would win. Bayern rather than Real, Real rather than PSG.
Real Madrid I at least have some respect for as a club and institution. Not that they haven’t done morally and legally questionable things, but PSG and City are operating on a whole different level in that regard.
I understand most people here don’t care much about Henderson as a football player anymore and rather about his actions off the pitch, but as an Ajax fan this is big news.
The squad is a mess and at least on paper Henderson is perfect. Great addition to a very young and often invisible midfield as well as an experienced player who could be a terrific influence on a group lacking true leaders and role models.
Honestly though I don’t really know him and am just repeating what I’ve read. I realized the other day I have confused him with James Milner in the past.
I’m hoping Henderson will be a big success of course, looking forward to seeing him.
This is good news. Not because the super league is a food idea, but UEFA should definitely not have a monopoly on football in Europe.
UEFA has created a system that is inherently unfair and functions purely to make money. In practice it means that a group of extremely wealthy and popular clubs from big countries are made to play as many games as possible while UEFA and the owners of those clubs make obscene amounts of money. The super league is an idea by some clubs so keep even more money, but UEFA is essentially doing the same just with slightly more clubs.
For the vast majority of clubs, fans, and let’s not forget players, this system does not work. The problem is that UEFA and large clubs have a lot of power, influence and money.
Fuck UEFA so hard. I hope the whole organization can be replaced by something more equal and equitable. The super league isn’t the answer to the problems of modern football, but UEFA isn’t either.
I thought I was done when I guessed oven, but there was no clear feedback saying I won. Went to the comments for the actual answer.
So my feedback: fun game! If possible, perhaps add something like “very close” if you guess something that’s almost the answer but not quite. Or oven could have just been wrong, since that wasn’t the actual answer.
I’m an ajax fan and remember this well (it was a foul against tagliafico I believe and I think mazraoui had gotten a red already).
Anyway, I totally agree with your assessment. You can see Rashford planting his foot to shield the ball. He’s not trying to touch the ball, he’s stomping his foot on what he hopes will be the ground but ends up being someone’s ankle. It’s a shame for him but easily avoidable.
These things used to be yellows at most. I personally am happy with VAR and think this should be a red.
Good, but fucking hell. What’s racist is the insinuation that some emoji is racist. Some stupid racist people equate black people with monkeys or something? I don’t even get what they’re trying to imply cause it’s so stupid, but the FA is perpetuating this idea and giving racists a bigger platform.
Racism is a huge problem for sure and a lot of work needs to be put into ridding it from our society. Making a fuss over an obviously supportive social media post is not what’s needed though, it’s just distracting from the real issues.
Manchester City, Chelsea, Sheffield… There are many more clubs with sketchy as fuck owners (or previous owners) who made their money exploiting other human beings. I’m glad there are some leagues with actual rules against these sort of things but in France and especially England it’s a free for all where I’m pretty sure Osama Bin Laden and Stalin could have co-owned Everton or something as long as they promised to invest enough (blood) money.
The response from PSG is so telling:
“The club regrets that the Disciplinary Commission has opted for an excessive and collective measure, likely to undermine the work of dialogue and prevention undertaken by the Club with associations, institutions and fans.”
They could/should have said “homophobia is wrong and we condemn is. Neither our fans nor our players should be singing these hurtful chants. We accept the punishment and shall be donating ___ € to [insert LGBTQ+ organization] as well as send the players involved to [insert related community program].”
Obviously PSG are villains so this would never happen, but imagine a world in which football clubs and players would use their position to make the world a better place? It’s so goddamn easy and I think it’s important to remember that PSG is choosing to be this way.
Sad.
I hope opponents’ supporters come up with some (not so) creative chants. Didn’t happen with Partey (or did it?), but I wonder if it wouldn’t be super effective if the crowd just continuously yells “rapist” every time Greenwood has the ball.
I don’t see it happening, but feel like that would receive a lot of media attention and put pressure on ManU.
The Saudi league will never be a top league I think. No offense to anyone but playing for a European club and competing in the champions league will surely remain the ultimate goal for the foreseeable future.
The money is what draws players for the time being. Saudi Arabia has lots of money now but that country is doomed and foreigners are not gonna be happy to live there, especially players’ partners. When the extreme amount of spending stops then top players will have no reason to go there.
Cause honestly, why would any top player move there if not for insane amount of money? It’s not a nice place to live (especially compared to London, Barcelona, Milan, Munich, etc) and without the champions league and the lack of history of the local league… I feel like they’re never going to consistently be able to get top players for the next ten years.
I wonder what the players and coaching staff think… and their female partners and daughters.
Obviously also men should not want this guy as their colleague, but like these protests show women probably care more.
Ten Hag is married to a woman and has two daughters. Only being supportive of women because you have daughters is stupid, but I do wonder about the conversations they might have.
I would absolutely talk to my husband / father in this situation. And what could Ten Hag say exactly? Morally he has no leg to stand on, for Man United it’s purely a financial decision. Greenwood represents a certain value and the club doesn’t want to give that up. Ten Hag could make his value for ManU zero by announcing he does not want rapists in his squad and will never play him. The fact he hasn’t is really disappointing.
How can you face your wife and daughters while defending a rapist and abuser? I don’t know how those two can ever be compatible and I would lose so much respect for anyone who does.
Fuck yes!!!
