Valve already has a game engine you can use – Source – although outside of their own games, it’s not really popular. Otherwise I think it’s moreso that making a good general gaming engine is hard. Like, really hard. If Valve tried to compete with, say, Unreal or Unity, (especially with their relatively small team) it’d more likely than not have no chance at all. They’d need a LOT more manpower, a massive budget, and to hope that they actually make something quality enough to actually be a viable alternative. Even then, though, it doesn’t have the 2 decades of content and design that Unreal and Unity have, which is pretty important. Although I suppose Source does have a lot of user-generated content.
It’d be a gargantuan investment, a massive risk that has a high likelihood of not turning out well, and even if it were successful it would likely take many years if not over a decade to actually see the benefit of it.
There’s a good reason most games use an extremely small amount of engines, either that or their own in-house engines. It’s a monumental task to make a great, easy-to-use, generic engine like the ones currently on the market.
IMO Valve trying to enter the game engine market would just end up being either Godot but worse, or Bevy but worse. It’d be far better if they just created a team to work on a pre-existing open-source engine, although I guess there’s not any money involved in that unless they for some reason used the engine.

I love Paradox’ games but man, I really hate Paradox sometimes. I bought all the Stellaris DLCs at the time while they were on sale (about $100, I think it was everything before the update that added espionage) thinking I was supporting the development of intergalactic space genocide & intelligent life cannibalism game, but the more I got into the community the more I realize… the devs kinda fuck the community over a lot. I would normally think “wow, they’re making so many great hits at the same time, the games might be extremely buggy but they really deserve credit” but as time goes on I start to see them more like I see every AAA studio. I guess that’s all you can expect when the company’s stocks are public.
Also imo you shouldn’t have to pay $300 to experience the full game god damn it! Although they do allow you to play as if you have most DLC when the host does, so I can’t say it’s immorally greedy. It’s something I can appreciate.
I mean that’s mostly because a separate Nintendo controller that wasn’t highly specialized for Nintendo games specifically is mostly a new thing.
We’ve had Xbox controllers and Playstation controllers for 2 and almost 3 decades respectively, and Nintendo games are the most targetted for emulation so of course there will be a lot of community effort put into mods for those.
Meanwhile your options for Nintendo controllers practically boiled down to Wii controllers, the Wii U gamepad, the NES controllers, the N64 controller, the consoles themselves like the 3DS/DS/Gameboy, and some others. Most of them are part of the consoles themselves so are out of the picture, the Wii controller is just not suitable for other consoles, the NES controllers don’t have joysticks, and the N64 controller has a single joystick.
The Switch controllers, which are relatively new, are really the only ones suitable for emulating other consoles’ games, and you can use the Switch controller to comfortably emulate many non-Nintendo games now.
Considering that, another important factor is that since the Switch controllers are more recent, they’re less likely to have been adapted to older or more obscure games especially, since to do that people now have to go do “back in time” modding for old games years or decades after their release. And since most modern non-Nintendo console games are available on PC natively and aren’t emulated, there’s really no incentive to make QOL mods for people using Switch controllers (or any other kinds of controllers for that matter, including PS & Xbox controllers) on newer titles.
It has nothing to do with the button layout itself, it wouldn’t even make sense for that to be the reason. People will use whatever controller they have available, so people who play Nintendo games most often will likely use Nintendo controllers and people who play the Xbox most often will likely use Xbox controllers.
I can’t tell if you’re being serious or not, ngl… if you’re being serious though then why do you suppose that having B be above A and Y be above X is the “correct” way? The way I see it, having A be the interact button seems more natural than having B be the interact button, and the former is how it’s set up on games like BOTW that use Nintendo controllers. Tbh though I actually wish bottom was X, left was A, right was B, and up was Y. An abomination to modern gamers, I’m sure, but it seems the most sensical considering the cultural perception of the symbol X imho.
Also Xbox isn’t the entire game industry… Playstation doesn’t even use the same symbols, and I can’t think of any relevant consoles which use similar controllers to those 3. The only “official” controllers I can think of that use the Xbox order are ones made for specifically Xbox/Microsoft. I guess also the Sega Dreamcast? But that’s more because Microsoft played a large role in making the Dreamcast, and later based the Xbox heavily off of Sega consoles/controllers, and the button layout just came along with everything else. They didn’t want to conflict with Nintendo and potentially get into legal issues based off of controller button layout, so that was the easiest route.
That being said, I’m so used to the Xbox controller layout that using Nintendo controllers gives me an aneurysm because Xbox switches the buttons. Any time I emulate a Nintendo game I just use my Xbox One controller and a mod to display the input tips differently. But that’s not anyone’s fault.
no pal world is not at all a pokémon-like game. the adventure aspect is idk what to call it, the only adventure really is finding new pals for the first time. it’s kind of like ark with some inspirations from BOTW mechanics but you throw some pokemon in there
it does have a good variety of pals but honestly the only thing that feels unique is the appearances/sizes and sometimes the modifiers they have. the actual movesets don’t feel very emphasized
in my opinion the actual pal vs pal combat is pretty lackluster, it’s definitely not the focus of the game (although using slave labour is a focus of the game)
i mean the good part about it is the survival aspect. it’s a pretty similar direction as ark except it’s actually playable (unlike ark). and it deviates from some other games like valheim enough for it to feel like a unique experience
the enslavement is just a neat bonus
right now it already feels like it had a lot more player-experience effort put into it than many already popular games (and way more than pokémon if that’s relevant lol), and even though it has some noticeable bugs and doesn’t have as much content as you might want, it definitely is something that feels like it has a lot of growth ahead of it. the mechanics on their own set up a good foundation for new additions ahead
the main thing that bugs me about it is some quality of life things, probably the biggest being storage management/sorting (god damn it this happens in every game i play) & not as much automation as i’d expect. if they made it so you could, i don’t know, link all your chests/storage nodes with some storage interface (maybe that pal computer that is already used for a lot of stuff), allowed you to assign which chests/chest slots pals can put which items in, allowed pals to take items from specific assigned chests to e.g. automatically craft certain proportions of items, etc. it’d make me want to play the game 100x as much. add a “factorio but with slaves” aspect to the game to appeal to a wider range of players, you know, even the minecraft redstoners might get in. basically adding a “storage & task management screen” would be sick
another thing is that i’ve found it really tedious to manage a large number of tasks/pals currently, which is why i mentioned “task management”, it’d be cool if you could easily manipulate priority/necessity to certain tasks and stuff
overall though they just need to focus on ironing out the bugs and then adding more content to the world to make it feel actually rewarding/interesting to explore (i guess this basically just means add more lore to the world, because it is severely lacking in story), and it’ll be an actually really worth-it game
There’s not really anything that makes using your PC in the same way inconvenient, you can connect it to your TV and wirelessly connect controllers, even more conveniently. Although switching between games or using different apps while doing so means you’d have to have a m&kb beside you I think, so if you’re playing with friends it might be less convenient (personally I only use controller on games that are unplayable on M&KB though, mainly emulated games)
That’s not how game development using an engine works… RAGE likely compiles code for at minimum a majority of modern computer hardware with next to no tweaking, and probably the same with Xbox & PlayStation consoles.
Most game engines used on large projects generally are made to handle as much of a variety of hardware as possible with little to no changes in the code – if you make a game using Unreal Engine or Unity for example it will almost certainly be able to work on Xbox, Playstation, and most PCs just fine. Most of the performance optimization for different hardware can then be offloaded to the engine. It’s likely the same with RAGE.
Because a PC can do everything a console can do, but way better, plus way more, lol
Consoles are completely redundant, you can get a better performing PC for the same price or lower if you wait for sales (especially when you consider the $60-120/year premium you have to pay to play console games online, Microsoft & Sony sell consoles at a loss because they know they’ll suck way more money out of you from subscriptions & other “fees” you experience from console)
Consoles are just shit value, you can’t use them for anything other than what, gaming and TV? And their specs are worth less than just buying similar parts separately and putting them together. So why would I spend up to $500 plus $80 every year on a shitty console just to play a new game because of artificial exclusives that will come to PC anyways? Assuming you use your PS5 or Xbox Series X or whatever for 6-7 years, that’s $1000 down the drain. And then after that you’ll still have to spend a few hundred on a laptop or PC or whatever to, you know, do your job or uni or whatever, because your console that costs over $500 can’t do any of that.
Investing in Godot probably has no sizable benfefit to Valve. But it does have a big benefit for gaming as a whole, specifically smaller or newer developers/studios. Meanwhile investing more in Source 2 may have a lot of benefit for Valve, depending a lot on their future plans.
