Wait, but we had recently a feature from PMG on YouTube showing how a significant portion of the art of devs like the coalition and Naughty Dog being contracted to sweatshops in Asia. So basically game development budgets are to pay a handful of talented programmers and the friends of the art and writing department while sweatshops do the work. Mega lol, we have bay area entitled shitheads playing ping pong in the office and adoring Elon while costing millions while the people who do the work are getting abused across the planet…
Half Life required an account at a time no game required accounts. Most PC games of the 7th gen required GFWL, so much so, without piracy, many are unplayable today. Microsoft still does this I.E. Doom Eternal where you’re required to enter a Bethesda account or the absolute shitshow minecraft has become. Most rockstar games on PC of the last decade required rockstar launcher, including steam releases.
Other than GFWL, there has been very little pushback on these types of requirements. Funnily enough, sony is the last one to arrive and the one that gets the most pushback… People are weird.
I find this comment amusing because other than Vagrant Story needing 1h to access the memory card, I think modern QoL has destroyed the fun and community in video games. Exhibit 1: the souls series. Not only did it introduce actual difficulty (not HP bar go brrrrr) in a world where it was gone it also had obtuse storytelling and a lot of missable content. It has resulted in one of the best franchises of the last 10y and a strong community that produces lore and discussion content to this day.
The main issue is in surveys of people who identify as “gamers”, your farmville enjoyer also considers itself a gamer, so AAA studios started to produce games to an audience that didn’t exist. Now the laid off development teams are paying the bill.
There should be more games like Outward, Valheim etc. Fun games that eschewed QoL that should have never existed like map click fast travel anywhere.
Several people who have worked for Naughty Dog say Druckmann and Straley stopped seeing eye-to-eye with Hennig, and that they had fundamental disagreements on where to take the Uncharted series. When Hennig left, she signed a non-disparagement agreement with the studio that would prevent both her and Naughty Dog from making negative public comments about what had happened, according to people familiar with the arrangement.
From “blood, sweat and pixels” which I own. I guess Schreier is also an unreliable source…
You reply like the typical reddit chud: Find something to latch on to, ignore the wider message, ad hominem, leave feeling victorious. Use vote manipulation to feel good about their chud selves with fake internet points.
At the end of the day, Mr woke Druckman doesn’t care for equality, if he did, he wouldn’t hire slavers.
Druckman hiring a lot overseas to cheapen asset production
DEI for Americans but not if you’re from overseas. Only US BIPOC count, the rest are shithole fodder.
Tax credits from WOTC are quite steep and consultancy can be offset in the R&D tax credit. That’s before mentioning local state incentives.
Typical US companies playing dirty and acting high and mighty. Neoliberalism at its best! And, ofc, the useful idiots that believe in the myth of US exceptionalism being terminally offended at reality checks.
Studios are subcontracting so much shit nowadays that I’m more interested in seeing what comes out of non AAA outfits than anything else. US games are mostly shit presently, the lion’s share of the work is done by low income workers and the peeps stateside get all the money and easy well paid consultant gigs and just enough to cash in on the DEI state subsidies and gov support. It’s absolutely 0 surprise the games are shit, it’s basically sweatshop game making. The funny part is Neil Druckman playing the saviour super woke evolved writer (after stepping on Hennig) but then subcontracts sweatshop work to make his assets. You couldn’t make this shit up.
It’s significant because in those 10 short years, a significant portion of the talent left the industry for greener pastures. When you mix genius level IQ people, definitely in the spectrum, with corporate types pushing line go up mentality and career drones using thought police tactics to progress their careers, while having 0 creativity, you get the current brand of AAA games from Western developers, aka, trash. They are more worried with the game’s response on xitter than if the game is fun…
I stopped playing games that didn’t run on deck (with DD2 being the exception) so I just migrated from Can*, I mean, Windows to Linux on the desktop because might as well do so. Haven’t looked back after a year of use. Linux is pretty plug and play for patient gamers.
Only downside is the lack of Serif software compatibility. Perhaps they’ll make a native version once a critical mass exists.
“There’s a ton of games with NFT from major publishers, surprisingly, only Ubisoft’s gets a shit ton coverage. Perhaps because they were dumb enough to publish as a first party”
Vs
“Your original comment was about other major publishers releasing NFT games recently and you saying we were mean just to Ubisoft because”
Tetsuo caught with its pants down chooses to move goalposts, noice! Notice the allusion to first pty vs using an investment strategy like MS to curtail the bad press. Stop with the bad faith Tetsuo, I never wrote recently and was very clear on the 3rd vs 1st pty strategy!
I focused on MS because it’s the object of the speculation here.
Others have done the same.
Straight from actiblizz, aka, Microsoft.
And that’s before mentioning King River Capital, an alleged MS Oceania investment arm that has been digging deeper than riotinto for a web3 success to sell to stockholders while avoiding the public scrutiny of demonstrably investing in web3. Xbox is happy to host most of their shitware.
There’s a ton of games with NFT from major publishers, surprisingly, only Ubisoft’s gets a shit ton coverage. Perhaps because they were dumb enpugh to publish as a first party, perhaps not. At any rate, It’s mobile fodder to hook wales, as a desperate company, Ubi jumped on the bandwagon to make some easy money. OTOH, somehow, it’s now fashionable to dunk on Ubi. That only happens with a significant amount of advertising dollars being sprinkled to create a narrative. Word on the street is it’s coming from Satya’s drive to monopolise the western publisher scene. It doesn’t surprise me one bit.
If they can really train a model at 600b parameters for 6M usd it’s an absolutely mind boggling achievement. No wonder it’s getting downvoted, it puts the capital intensive US firms to shame for lack of innovation. I’d love to see some benchmarks.
As a side note, this would open up the market for non English language LLMs with less requirements than the mammoth necessities of current models.
You’re mistaken if you think this means simultaneous PC release. Spencer was travelling around during TGS offering wads of money to whoever wanted to take it, this just means FF will prolly end up on Xbox for a non insignificant lump sum while PC will be left to boost the game’s sale tail like with XV.
I think if they want to sell lots of copies, they should make a good FF. XIII was trash, XV was meh, XVI was a step in the right direction but the combat is utter trash and the remakes pushed too far. They divided the remake into a trilogy to jam their hands deep into the fans’ pockets and are being punished for it. I highly doubt the majority of FF fans is not already on PlayStation. Shit, I’ve bought and played every single FF since FFI and the last three really made the series sour on me. I’m replaying FFXII because VI, despite having a really interesting story and setting, seems to have been designed for Americans. Action and dumbed down mechanics, no strategy, no maths, no materia or spell combo, no massive skill trees… Make FF good for people with above room temp IQ again and watch the sales soar.
That’s a weird way of writing shit stealth because of the dumb AI. If it were a Ubisoft game they would be grilled but it’s MS so it’s OK. The AI on this game is an order of magnitude dumber than in SW Outlaws. Seriously, there’s no consistency whatsoever.
Edit: The post-hoc rationalisation in the replies is insane. People will say the stupidest things to defend poorly made games, such as “bad AI is good”.
If you need to have 2001 lvl of AI for your game to be playable, then you failed at your job. That’s it. This is not an indie dev, it’s a team supported by one of the richest companies on earth.
I repeat, if this game was made by Ubisoft it would have been panned. It survives on nostalgia alone. If the gameplay is shit, I’m better off buying an Indy box set and just watching the films. Yes, the game takes over 10h to beat, but remove the walking simulation parts and it’s almost even with the films.
Different strokes for different folks I guess. The puzzles are DA Inquisition levels of dumb, the level design is OK in the more open areas but there’s the frequent feeling the game is a walking sim in the more linear ones and the action is trash, just absolute trash, even MGS1 on PS1 had more aware enemies, it’s laughable in 2024 the AI is worse than 30y ago. This game would have been panned were it not for the indy tie in.
On the positive side, the voice acting is top notch and the writing is OK, I like the dynamic between villains. The looks are great but the level design really squanders the great graphical fidelity.
I love Indiana Jones BTW, I can probably recite Raiders line by line, maybe that’s why this didn’t gel with me.
Talk about journos making a mountain out of a molerat… If it in fact was written by a “journo” and not an AI. To be fair, journo is a stretch, journos have journalism degrees, there’s very little separating “gaming journalists” from bloggers. (Schreier and the like being the exception)
