I eat that free hotdog every week, then go across the street and buy another one.

Castlevania 64 was clearly an unfinished game. The first couple levels make their ambitions clear, and the rest of the game is just sort of slapped together. Legacy of Darkness added the rest of the game.

Nobody really celebrates these games. I grew up with them and can appreciate the experience they were offering, but they weren’t exactly my favorites, and I don’t feel they aged particularly well. Maybe take a look through a long play video before committing any real time to it.

Ah, fuck I miss the goons, too. I still log in every couple of years or so. It’s sort of like walking down a street you used to live on. It’s all still familiar, but nothing is really the same.

Oh, you’ll always be able to find a copy if you’re willing to look for it. I will be very surprised if we see meaningful development again.

Yeah, it’s pretty disappointing. I keep hearing people say it’ll get forked and people will continue the work. All I can say is “lol.”

I believe they take subscriptions for early release builds of the emulator.

Today was the first of 14 they plan to give away through Jan 4th, according to this article

I’ve been trying out The Universim recently. It has a lot of the same ideas, but gets rid of many which I felt didn’t work. Most notably, there is no creature bound to your will. I think the game is better for the omission. Version 1.0 is slated for January, and is supposed to include interplanetary colonization.

I mean if we want to keep going down that road, there’s Ultima which was released in '81. I bet there’s something even more obscure that predates it.

Looks like it should be worth a go. I look forward to attacking aggressively. sips coffee

If the reduction in overhead, or any other optimizations it might offer, increases performance even more, I might go out of my way to set up a multi-boot.

I just wanted to show some appreciation for sharing your experience. Speaking candidly about difficult subjects really can help people.

Yeah, I’m sure the skill ceiling will grow as long as it has active players. To me, it feels like they want a space for casual players. There is no text chat and VOIP is off by default. It’s much more difficult for toxic players to be abusive. Honestly, I haven’t had this particular kind of fun with an FPS since Team Fortress 2 back in the day.

I’m playing it right now, it’s pretty fun. Aesthetically it’s completely incoherent, which I find a bit off-putting. But the gameplay is there, and it’s not too terribly sweaty. Which is great for filthy casuals like myself.

It’s my point of view that they created so much friction in the gameplay loop that players generally prefer logging to get their materials or whatever they need, and FDev’s policy is “sure, whatever,” because then they don’t have to improve the gameplay.
