Oh. Okay. 4X. Explore, Expand, Exploit, Exterminate. It’s a genre of strategy game that tries to offer “non-military” winning conditions.
Think Civilization or Stellaris.
Edit: "I give MOO a XXXX rating because it features the essential four Xs of any good strategic conquest game: EXplore, EXpand, EXploit, and EXterminate. In other words, players must rise from humble beginnings, finding their way around the map while building up the largest, most efficient empire possible.
It was the reason I downloaded Steam, and back in those days I was pissed that I had the CD and the box and the manual AND they wanted me to go online and download more than a gig of data on my crappy dial up.
I got the game in the morning and I only got to play it later that afternoon… and I swore I’d never use Steam for anything else again.
Fast forward 20 years and probably a few thousand bucks later 🤦🏻♂️
Shifting the goalposts on behalf of OP, but whatever. Where are you guys coming from?
Narrative games of any scope are almost inevitably going to bump into themes like hierarchy, power dynamics and moral dilemmas. That doesn’t make them “political” in the sense that they’re directly discussing real events around you. I won’t presume anything about your personal position here, but OP gives the impression that if a fantasy game depicted a fictional race subjugated by another he would start complaining that it was woke.
If you want a story without those things you largely need to pick a different genre.
I felt so seen by that pc gamer article talking about how the author had been playing Alien: Isolation for ten years without ever finishing it.
I am that person exactly. I love it, but I have a very limited constitution when it comes to how long I can play that game without needing a long enough break that I should probably just start it over 🤣
MangaloreGaming has some absolutely hilarious reviews of exceedingly bad games.
Goddamn I did not think you were gonna help out on this one. Adder, you biscuit. High five. Thanks for typing that out.
Links and everything. You’re a mensch and not a bot :)
Edit: I still don’t agree with you that they should release the data because the company isn’t a monolith and there’s innocent people’s effort and IP at stake. But at least now I feel like I see where you’re coming from.
You’re not being super useful, man. Commenting like this is just talking to yourself in a mirror. Wikipedia has some info about them, so I guess I’m a little caught up.
What part of this makes it a good thing?
Pity. The guy to take that issue up with just left the building 🤣
