Probably a stupid question as I have never used ApkMirror before and generally am weary of app mirror sites: How is it in terms of reputability? Does it repackage apps or does it directly serve the original releases?

Is there a way to get LineageOS’s Trebuchet launcher on other ROMs?
It is surprisingly hard to find open source launchers that are simply the AOSP default launcher with few UX modifications. [NeoLauncher](https://apt.izzysoft.de/fdroid/index/apk/com.saggitt.omega) is one, but while the GitHub seems to still be active, the last update to the app on the repository is from 2022, almost a year ago. I was thinking that LineageOS's Trebuchet is a pretty good default AOSP launcher. Seems to be actively updated with the Lineage project and also up to date with the latest stock Android look and feel. I'm not entirely sure if it's just the base AOSP code with few modifications or if it's a fully custom launcher that Lineage developed though, but either works for me. I can't outright switch to LineageOS right now due to compatibility issues with some of my work apps, so is there a way to get that Trebuchet and run it on other ROMs? For example on /e/OS because its default iPhone esque launcher kind of sucks? Does Lineage offer the package in a repository some how? Or is there otherwise another reputable way to download the standalone app for any ROM?

Yeah that’s on me. I never really looked for netflix downloader type software because everything I’d possibly want to watch on Netflix (not a lot all things considered) is available on torrent. Guess I never really wondered how they rip the videos for torrenting, which in hindsight is kind of obvious.

In anyways, we will keep fighting collaboratively as long as we can.

You’re doing god’s work!

Probably not. There’s no netflix-dl for a reason.

I wish you the best of luck! I’m on a similar journey to replace YouTube.

I don’t think there are any that don’t require jailbreak/sideloading, but you can always use the browser versions like Invidious or Piped!

The vast majority of their userbase already puts up with it, so I doubt they will see any significant backlash. Even if all the FLOSS creators leave, they’re still a tiny minority because it’s “”“influencer”“” channels like the Pauls and content farms like Bright Side that are the real cash cows on the platform.

Also, a huge part of their userbase is children. Probably more than any other mainstream social media platform. They won’t even understand the concept of DRM or corporate bullshittery and will only use the YouTube app or browser anyway. Kids are also less likely to be bothered by ads, might not even understand what the purpose of an ad is, in fact they will just see them as more content which is why advertising to kids is so unreasonably effective.

Wonder if that will finally change with web integrity.

I’ve never pegged Google as particularly giving a shit about legacy support though. They kill things out of the blue without warning or explanation.

I’m going to seriously consider completely discontinuing watching YouTube if NewPipe stops working. I still like plenty of non-FLOSS oriented channels that will never even consider a FLOSS or open web solution, but I think I owe it to myself to not accept Google’s bullshit, not even use it from the browser, with or without the adblock ban. Not to protest Google’s actions because I don’t care, but to uphold my own values and interests. I need to heed my own advice and extended rants about big tech.

NewPipe, Piped, Invidious, etc’s days are numbered.
With Reddit shutting down its API setting a precedent in the corporate tech world (and Reddit was a major outlier in that a ton of their users are technical minded and support third party clients, YouTube does not have that kind of userbase and will not get backlash for it), Twitter doing whatever the fuck they're doing, and Google *already* hellbent on destroying ad blockers, the days of Newpipe, Invidious, and Freetube are numbered. Wouldn't be surprised if they implement Netflix level DRM tomorrow that makes alt clients impossible. I say savour your alt clients while you can guys, you won't be able to soon.

Convenience and platform inertia. Same with most shitty cloud services.

Also, if you were added against your will, especially to somewhere like that, why would you not remove yourself immediately? He’s the cofounder of Reddit, it’s not like we’re talking about some rando who checks his account once a year and doesn’t pay attention to potential changes they didn’t make, PLUS he’s literally an admin with server side access which makes any claims of “well you couldn’t remove yourself once added as a mod” invalid, there is no way he didn’t notice it and no way he could not remove himself. He wanted to be there and wholeheartedly endorsed such content being hosted from Reddit until the public rightfully got outraged and forced them to ban it.

To be fair, the downvotes might also be part of the joke. That comment was the most downvoted in Reddit history before EA came along.

And it’s not like there’s karma on Lemmy so I don’t care lol

“It’s time we grow up,” says former moderator of jailbait subreddit.

See this is another thing, how is Reddit management not in prison and on the sex offenders list? They willfully and knowingly distributed child pornography for YEARS. And it’s not like they’re rich enough or have enough high up connections to get out of it. What the fuck?

Once again, the problem here is: disinformation according to whom? Themselves? The US government? NATO?

Are non circadian rhythm disrupting light bulbs a thing?
Another one of my random ideas that I'm curious if it's actually available. I tried searching for this but couldn't find much information. Basically, the same concept of reducing blue light as those glasses and the "night mode" for screens to help you sleep. I imagine it's not that hard to do that with white LED lights as well, just alter the phosphor formulation to emit only lower wavelength lights, it would probably make the light more yellow, but that's honestly a small price to pay if it makes you sleep better. Does it exist already? If so, any word on how well they work?

TBH this reeks of manager god complex. “I need the peasents in the office so I can feel better about my sad life by making the people under my management worse!”

Capitalist, socialist, or whatever, you have to admit that this is an extremely stupid hill to die on.

What’s the companies’ obsessions with in person office work anyway? Most companies reported anywhere from no productivity loss to improved productivity once they got into the swing of WFH, and now they don’t have to buy or rent office spaces. More importantly, most workers report lower stress, better morale, and more free time due to not commuting (which also has the benefit of cutting down on emissions). Seems like a win-win for everyone.

If you want a good all around browser, Firefox.

If you don’t like Mozilla either (which is fair), GNU Icecat, Fennec F-Droid, etc.

If you absolutely need Chromium, Ungoogled Chromium.

Except Robinhood absolutely deserves a one-star rating. Sure, go ahead and remove the reviews if they’re untrue, offensive or obscene, but negative reviews about an incident that actually happened shouldn’t be removed.

What’s an Android smartphone with a good balance between privacy and usability?
My old phone's battery has given up the ghost. Can someone recommend a current generation smartphone, preferably Android, that strikes a good balance between usability and privacy? I'm also fine with an Android phone that's not that great with privacy out of the box, but has good support for third party ROMs like Lineage or Copperhead. Even better if the phone's chassis and battery can just unscrew so I can replace it myself. I've looked into the Pinephone and other Linux-only phones, but I'd like to wait until the app ecosystem is more mature. At least with Android I can use the F-droid apps for privacy consciousness.
